{"id":102,"date":"2015-02-18T04:13:11","date_gmt":"2015-02-18T08:13:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.online.berklee.edu\/andreastolpe\/?p=102"},"modified":"2026-01-20T17:27:04","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T22:27:04","slug":"networking-that-works","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/networking-that-works\/","title":{"rendered":"Networking Tips for Songwriters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-songwriter-networking-strategies-turning-relationships-into-career-opportunities\">Songwriter Networking Strategies: Turning Relationships into Career Opportunities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the first questions I ask songwriters and artists I work with is, \u201cwhat are you doing to network with other writers and artists?\u201d&nbsp;Playing shows and writing with our buddy or the band back home are important activities and should be budgeted into our time.&nbsp;But I think that many of us aren\u2019t clear enough on how to use these activities to expand our network, and what other activities we should be doing.&nbsp;To test your own clarity, take out a sheet of paper and ask yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who are the writes of my favorite 25 songs?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What other songs have these writers written?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who are some of the cowriters on these other songs?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where are these writers located?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What publishers own the rights to these songs?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who other writers are affiliated with those publishers, particularly who are newly signed?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Most songwriters can rattle off the names of artists and writers who are widely acclaimed.&nbsp;But the power of a working business relationship is in the give and take.&nbsp;Network with an eye towards writers and artists you can be an asset to.&nbsp;Writers on the cusp of a publishing deal who are collaborating a lot, or artists who collaborate and perform often and with a variety of musicians can be great assets to your career as you can be to theirs.&nbsp;Through these networks you can find good emotional and mental support as well.&nbsp;If you make feeding into others&#8217; careers as important as forwarding your own, you\u2019ll find doors opening to more opportunity.&nbsp;If you\u2019re networking with musicians who do the kind of music you love, those open doors will be more focused towards the opportunities you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make up a business plan for the next three months, and include in it researching the musicians in your niche you\u2019d like to hang around.&nbsp;Then, make a plan to hang out in the places those musicians and the kind of music you want to create is made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Happy writing,<br>Andrea Stolpe<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/music-business?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">STUDY MUSIC BUSINESS WITH BERKLEE ONLINE<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the first questions I ask songwriters and artists I work with is, \u201cwhat are you doing to network with other writers and artists?\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":6,"featured_media":7525,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1,9564,9588,9589,29,9566],"tags":[6157,984,7540,7539,1021,7492,1318,1617],"class_list":["post-102","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-articles","category-features-articles","category-music-career-advice-articles","category-music-career-advice-lessons","category-songwriting-lessons","category-songwriting-articles","tag-andrea-stolpe","tag-music-industry","tag-music-industry-advice","tag-musician","tag-networking","tag-songwriter","tag-songwriting","tag-writer"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v25.8 (Yoast SEO v25.8) -
