When it\u2019s really going good, I feel like it\u2019s this kind of fine gray sand that\u2019s pouring down on my head. It\u2019s cooling, it\u2019s calming, and it\u2019s like I\u2019m standing under the sand of an hourglass. As long as that feeling is there, I\u2019m writing. And when it\u2019s not there, I\u2019m done. There\u2019s no benefit in sitting there when it\u2019s not happening. And I only know that from such long experience, and hours and hours of wasted creative time. There are times when I should just be going outside, and doing something else.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-work-on-songs-a-little-at-a-time\"><strong>Work on songs a little at a time.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Rather than being the type of person who gets up in the morning and writes a song, I get up in the morning and I do the things I need to do in my day, and when a phrase or a melody jumps in my head, I\u2019ll sit down and I\u2019ll write it down. But I won\u2019t try to finish it unless it\u2019s all there. I think there\u2019s a few songs that I remember writing all at once, but I think in general, I write best when something accrues, and I start the snowball rolling down a hill. After a while it picks up its own lines, and its own way of performance, but if I sit down and put my nose to the grindstone every day, it doesn\u2019t seem to work out as well for me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-a-line-jumps-into-your-head-try-it-in-a-song\"><strong>When a line jumps into your head, try it in a song.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There are some lines that are the seed, or the pearl of the song, and they\u2019re important because they\u2019re the ones that jump into your head. \u2018All the other girls here are stars, you\u2019re the Northern Lights,\u2019 that\u2019s like a line that, man, I wish I\u2019d thought to use that on a girl, but it never occurred to me. So when it jumps in your head, there\u2019s a reason that it\u2019s there.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Josh Ritter: &quot;Kathleen&quot; Video\/Montage\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Bm3lWq4s5-U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Josh Ritter&#8217;s song &#8220;Kathleen&#8221; <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-more-complicated-you-make-a-song-the-less-powerful-it-is\"><strong>The more complicated you make a song, the less powerful it is.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I find that oftentimes, the things that make a song less powerful is that it\u2019s more complicated. That\u2019s why some of these old country songs are classics, because they start off with a thesis statement. \u2018I Saw the Light,\u2019 is a Hank Williams song, and it\u2019s a super simple thesis: he saw the light, he\u2019s had this conversion, he was this bad guy but now he\u2019s good, and changing his ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It doesn\u2019t need to get complicated, it\u2019s just that one line, and you take this one line that you\u2019ve been delivered somehow\u2014that\u2019s made its way into your mind\u2014and you can unwrap it like an envelope. You just open it up, and the whole song is inside that line.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-can-t-fit-something-into-a-song-leave-it-alone-for-now\"><strong>If you can&#8217;t fit something into a song, leave it alone . . . for now.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I picture a song as being\u2014if this makes sense\u2014you\u2019re in a dark landscape, and you have a fire, and you need to go somewhere else, and you have to carry that fire somewhere else. You have to carry a burning branch to the next place you\u2019re going to start your fire, so with each song you\u2019re carrying a little bit of that original fire with you. The songs that don\u2019t have it, the songs where the fire goes out, they\u2019re just not right, so there\u2019s no sense in keeping them. That being said, there are some ideas which, despite every try to cram them into something, they\u2019ll never fit. And those are the ones that are waiting around to become the really good stuff. \u2026 Maybe it will be in 20 years though.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-are-the-most-important-person-in-your-audience\"><strong>You are the most important person in your audience.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;All you can really do is write for yourself. There\u2019s all kinds of ways that you can structure a song, and write what it\u2019s about, and all these things that will bring people in, but unless you\u2019re singing something that really truly entertains you, then no one else is going to care. \u2026 Write for yourself because you\u2019re the only audience that matters.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-write-about-what-you-obsess-over\"><strong>Write about what you obsess over.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I find that writing comes from not a moment of thinking about something, as opposed to a moment of being <em>obsessed<\/em> with it. . . . &nbsp;When you have things that you really care about\u2014things that matter to you\u2014they are what make you. And to write as if those things don\u2019t exist is to efface yourself. Then you\u2019re not really an artist anymore: You\u2019re just creating blanks. In the end, you\u2019ve got to say something. Big songs can be about little things, and little songs can be about big things, but really in the end the only thing that really comes out is that you have to put a foot forward, and talk about stuff.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-writing-a-song-is-like-going-to-a-party\"><strong>Writing a song is like going to a party.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Writing a song is like going to a party: You want to show up when it\u2019s happening, and you don\u2019t want to be the last one to leave. As much as you\u2019re describing, you have to be able to go in, and paint a portrait of the thing, and then leave.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-be-bold-and-mighty-forces-will-come-to-your-aid\"><strong>Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Oftentimes the thing that I find sets great art apart from the rest is its bravery and its vulnerability.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-writing-bad-songs-helps-you-write-great-songs\"><strong>Writing bad songs helps you write great songs.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think about failures as the moment when you\u2019re cutting the block of granite, and you\u2019ve got this big huge piece of rock, and all those songs that never went anywhere, and all those things, that\u2019s just part of the stuff you\u2019re chipping away until you get to the real songs. And the real songs are in there. There may be like 10 of them in 100 songs. But they\u2019re the statue you\u2019re trying to get to.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"
