Don\u2019t make it obvious who you are writing about.<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t ever want to throw anybody under the bus [in a song]. I think when things are personal or I\u2019m throwing myself under the bus that can be okay at times, but if [a song] is ever about somebody else then I try and not make it obvious\u2026 because I don\u2019t want to be mean or on bad terms with anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-write-what-you-feel-then-think-about-how-it-will-transfer-to-a-live-or-studio-setting\">2. Write what you feel, then think about how it will transfer to a live or studio setting.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUsually, I don\u2019t try and limit myself so that I can [play] live. I write things that challenge me so that I can become a better guitar player, and then just know I have to practice them a bunch. To be totally honest with you, playing \u2018Kills to Be Resistant\u2019 can be really difficult for me. I have to practice that [song] a lot. I will still sit in my room and just practice it\u2026 I try to just write and come up with a song that I like and am happy with and after that think about how it\u2019s going to translate live and how it\u2019s going to translate in the studio.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bully - Kills to Be Resistant\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cia7HOYxj8w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-contrasting-vocal-melodies-add-a-lot-of-variety-to-songs\"><b>3. Contrasting vocal melodies add a lot of variety to songs.<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBridges are always really difficult for me [to write]. Lots of times, bringing up a melody can do so much. I hate to say this because I feel like I\u2019m ratting myself out and I don\u2019t think it necessarily makes the song less of a song because of it, but if you listen to \u2018Trying\u2019 it\u2019s pretty much the same chord progressions throughout the song except for the bridge. Really what is changing is the vocal melody and the dynamics. I think that\u2019s a good example of something that goes to show if you spend enough time working on dynamics and figuring out how to lift the melody a little bit more or make it a little bit more exciting in the choruses, that can really do a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bully - Trying (Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r7LLBBGOfKY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-make-music-that-you-like\"><b>4. Make music that you like.<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJust make music you like and that makes you feel good and that makes you happy. Hopefully, it will speak to somebody. Keep making music you like because that\u2019s all that matters. If you make a bunch of crappy music then finish out, you won\u2019t be happy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-write-lyrics-you-want-despite-what-people-will-think\"><b>5. Write lyrics you want, despite what people will think.<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI actually think about [whether or not] an extended family member [will] call out something in my lyrics&#8230; Like, \u2018That wasn\u2019t appropriate for you to write about!\u2019 But I think there is this line of respect with those people who are close to you. If they really support you, [they] know that [songwriting] is your creative outlet and it\u2019s kinda what you need to do to get through the day\u2026 When I first listened to Liz Phair\u2019s <i><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/5x0AM9gvJVchXJo7EYuGxb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Exile in Guyville<\/a>,<\/i> I remember distinctly thinking I really appreciated how honest [the lyrics] were. To me, it\u2019s harder to do because I\u2019m forcing myself to really understand what I\u2019m writing and making sure that the whole song makes sense\u2026 Being honest in lyrics is just kind of a part of that for me. Just do what you want to do. If you want to write [lyrics] nobody understands and it\u2019s abstract, then go for it. If you want write personal, don\u2019t not be personal because you\u2019re worried about what people will think.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Bully&#8217;s new album &#8220;Losing&#8221; is out
