His activities could include playing live gigs with his band,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.petemuller.com\/live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\">Pete Muller &amp; Friends<\/span><\/a>, surfing, running a quantitative investment fund, or collaborating with Berklee\u2019s Board of Trustees\u2014 which recently led to the founding of Power Station at BerkleeNYC, a major recording studio revitalization project. The project promises to restore to glory a historical recording facility, as well as provide internship opportunities for Berklee students. But what Muller is keen on discussing today is his dedication to writing crossword puzzles, which have been published in the&nbsp;<i>New York Times<\/i>,&nbsp;<i>The Los Angeles Times<\/i>, and on his own site, <a href=\"http:\/\/pmxwords.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\">pmxwords.com<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI love doing crosswords, but it was&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/xwordcontest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\">Matt Gaffney<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;who turned me on to meta crossword puzzles. He once commented, \u2018I never get to actually do metas.\u2019 So I created one, sent it to him and he published it as a guest puzzle in his contest. Matt liked it and encouraged me to start my own series, which is what I did.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Metapuzzles? Yes, metapuzzles. A metapuzzle is a puzzle within a puzzle that users have to figure out once they have solved the crossword portion. Muller was hooked and started creating his own metapuzzles and year-long mega-metas.&nbsp;A \u201cmega-meta\u201d puzzle, by the way, is a metapuzzle that combines the answers of subsequent metapuzzles to form one ultimate answer. Muller&#8217;s series, which starts its seventh year this January, is called the<a href=\"http:\/\/pmxwords.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\"> Muller Monthly Music Meta<\/span><\/a>, because at the core of these metapuzzles is music.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For example, one year users had to combine single letters from each metapuzzle in a way that didn\u2019t initially seem to make much sense. \u201cBut once you realize the letters are musical notes, and figure out the rhythm, you get the riff from \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/2kkvB3RNRzwjFdGhaUA0tz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\">Layla<\/span><\/a>,\u2019 the mega-meta answer,\u201d says Muller. Several of his crossword solvers subsequently pointed out that \u201c \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/1k1Bqnv2R0uJXQN4u6LKYt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\">Ain\u2019t No Sunshine<\/span><\/a>\u2019 actually starts with the same six notes\u201d he recalls.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The aesthetic for the way he crafts his series, is that it should be difficult, but not impossible.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cYou\u2019re trying to create a battle with the solver, but ultimately, you want them to win. When people do the puzzle, I want them to tear their hair out occasionally. It is supposed to get frustrating, especially on the harder puzzles that come later in the year. But then, eventually, I want them to solve it and go, \u2018Oh, wow! That feels great!\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While Muller\u2019s many activities and interests may at first seem disparate, he says there is one element that unifies authoring crosswords, overseeing a hedge fund, writing songs, performing, and investing in a studio: Creativity.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/oakland-shot-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10552\" srcset=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/oakland-shot-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/oakland-shot-768x1148.jpg 768w, https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/oakland-shot-685x1024.jpg 685w, https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/oakland-shot.jpg 856w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen I\u2019m creating and growing, that\u2019s when I\u2019m most alive, so I try to do that as much as possible in life. If it is just about my own creativity, that\u2019s just a selfish pursuit. I get really excited trying to help others grow,\u201d he says. \u201cI want to have a sparkle in my eye as much as possible. Where does that come from? That comes from waking up in the morning and feeling like you\u2019ve actively chosen to do the things you are doing, and you\u2019re putting yourself fully into them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of the other endeavors that Muller has recently put himself \u201cfully into\u201d is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berklee.edu\/NYC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BerkleeNYC<\/a>, which he says he was uncertain about at first. The conditions had to be exactly right. And fortunately for all involved, they were.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cA long time ago I wanted to go to Berklee, but I didn\u2019t want to live in Boston,\u201d he says. \u201cRecently, I thought, \u2018Maybe I can help bring Berklee to New York City.\u2019 <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.berklee.edu\/president\" target=\"_blank\">Roger Brown<\/a> and I knew we had to find somebody great to run it. That person was <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/faculty\/stephen-webber\/?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Stephen Webber<\/a>, who at that time was an executive director at the Berklee Valencia campus. I met Stephen and thought \u2018He\u2019s in it for the right reasons. He is just excited about life, and knows how to think things through and make them work.
