{"id":11159,"date":"2018-09-18T11:36:18","date_gmt":"2018-09-18T16:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/takenote\/?p=11159"},"modified":"2025-10-22T12:24:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T17:24:15","slug":"ben-vaughn-talks-television-scoring-production-and-songwriting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/ben-vaughn-talks-television-scoring-production-and-songwriting\/","title":{"rendered":"Ben Vaughn Talks Television Scoring, Production, and Songwriting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class='wp-block-heading' style='text-transform:none;' id='how-ben-vaughn-brought-big-star-to-that-70s-show-and-shaped-television-scoring'>How Ben Vaughn Brought Big Star to <em>That \u201970s Show<\/em> and Shaped Television Scoring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Libsyn Player\" style=\"border: none\" src=\"\/\/html5-player.libsyn.com\/embed\/episode\/id\/7060070\/height\/90\/theme\/custom\/thumbnail\/yes\/direction\/forward\/render-playlist\/no\/custom-color\/87A93A\/\" height=\"90\" width=\"100%\" scrolling=\"no\"  allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may know Ben Vaughn as a producer of artists such as Los Straightjackets, Charlie Feathers, Ween, or the one-off collaboration between Big Star\u2019s Alex Chilton and Suicide\u2019s Alan Vega, which he talks about in the episode of Berklee Online\u2019s <em>Music Is My Life<\/em> podcast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ben Vaughn got his start as the leader of a group called the Ben Vaughn Combo in the 1980s, and got a lot of attention from mainstream press, and inspired favorable cover versions of his tunes by the likes of Marshall Crenshaw, the Plimsouls, Man or Astroman, and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His big break in the music industry came when he moved out to LA and quickly got a job as a composer for the show <em>Third Rock from the Sun,<\/em> which he composed the theme for.
