She realized the fragility of life and decided she wanted to give back to her community by sharing something that she loved: music.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt his funeral, I just changed,\u201d says Rose, a songwriting major at Berklee Online. \u201cIt\u2019s like I morphed into someone different. I made a promise that I would live the rest of my life purposefully \u2026 so I started providing my community with free music summer camps.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rose established the nonprofit, <a href=\"https:\/\/musicforpurpose.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Music for Purpose<\/a>, which began as a free music program for children in her community in Vista, California, then bridged over to serve orphans and at-risk youth in Honduras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rose raised the money to start her nonprofit through donations and by holding live benefit performances across the US. In 2015, she caught a plane to San Pedro Sula, Honduras, where she has been teaching music to at-risk children ever since. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Learning the \u201cDUT DUT\u201d\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zIJJbttQZ4o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Music for Purpose students practice the \u201cdut, dut\u201d at a rehearsal led by Rose. Afterward, they enjoy a hot meal. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Honduras has one of the world\u2019s highest murder rates and levels of sexual violence. Lack of afterschool programs and parental supervision leaves school-age children susceptible to gangs, so Rose wanted to give them a sense of purpose and belonging with a safe place to learn music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3264\" height=\"2448\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/6D97A5D2-5A34-4D16-BB1E-CA72924C36FA.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13757\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rose teaches her students the drums. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re poor and so a lot of the entertainment comes from the gang members,\u201d says Rose. \u201cEvery child wants to matter. So, who are the ones that are going to entertain these children that want to matter? The gang members. So, I\u2019m there to keep them busy. I\u2019ve been building a drum line and we basically fund ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Week 2\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nMyrTCdSE5E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rose gives a peek inside a drum lesson at Music for Purpose. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rose teaches nearly 40 students how to play the drums, something she learned from her marching band days in high school. Often, her responsibilities extend beyond just music education. When she realized that her students were coming to practice hungry, she reallocated funds to make sure they were getting meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/A638B3C3-4D21-41DA-803D-EE561DC2185F-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13756\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Music is not the only lesson Music for Purpose students learn. Community service is also part of the program. \u201cThey have been taught that they are the future leaders of Honduras and that we need to start acting like it now to create change in a much-needed country,\u201d says Rose. Here they are pictured after cleaning trash off the streets.&nbsp;<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery once in a while my family says, \u2018Rose you can\u2019t be working too hard\u2014You\u2019re going to work yourself to death\u2019 and it\u2019s like, how can I <em>not<\/em> work?\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m alive, I\u2019m happy doing what I\u2019m doing. &#8230; I can take these kids to something as simple as pizza. So, I can take them out, I can work rehearsals, I can motivate them, and I can be creative with my life.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While running Music for Purpose, Rose wanted to continue her music education and take advantage of a scholarship that she earned through AmeriCorps. She didn\u2019t want to leave Honduras to go back to school, so she began searching the internet for online music programs when she stumbled upon Berklee Online. Rose applied and was accepted into the songwriting bachelor\u2019s program. She remembers crying when she told her parents the happy news over a video call.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t cry a lot, but I was so emotional,\u201d says Rose. \u201cI was like, \u2018Mom of all people, they chose me.\u2019\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of medical obstacles, Rose\u2019s educational journey at Berklee hasn\u2019t been easy. She had to take two semesters off and go on medical leave more than once. She is currently back in the US recovering from surgery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Thankful (Official Music Video)-Tag the ones you are most thankful for!\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OcEWQv65a_g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rose realized that she didn&#8217;t know any songs about Thanksgiving to sing with her students, so she wrote one herself! Her brand new music video features friends, family, and her classmates from Berklee Online. The video is dedicated to the children of Honduras. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Going forward, Rose hopes to expand her nonprofit\u2019s instrument offerings beyond drums. Right now she is trying to raise $2,000 to purchase 17 new trombones, trumpets, and cornets.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis year, I want to introduce brass instruments,\u201d says Rose. \u201cSo, I\u2019m hoping once I recover that I\u2019m able to somehow get donations. I don\u2019t know how, but I\u2019m here because of the faith that I\u2019ve had so far.
