With course authors and instructors who teach music production, music therapy, and film, TV, and game scoring, we were bound to receive some interesting answers: and we did! Their recommendations range from the usual seasonal suspects, to trick-or-treat celebrations that evoke the childhood fun of Halloween to horrifying themes from some of the scariest films of all time, to dark and petrifying rock \u2018n\u2019 roll. It plays during the famous shower scene Alexander speaks of, where the character Marion is murdered. As Herrmann\u2019s biographer Steven Smith said in an NPR interview, the <em>Psycho<\/em> theme reimagined how stings could be used in film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt creates a very different sound from what we think of as the usual Hollywood romantic film score that used violins,\u201d says Smith. \u201cIt\u2019s the exact opposite. It\u2019s cold, it\u2019s chilly, and he uses the strings also for percussive effects, since we don\u2019t have the traditional things like timpani and all the sort of devices that film composers use to scare or startle people. He created percussive effects in the strings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-theme-from-alien\">Theme from <em>Alien<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Alien Iconic Theme\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E23Pg6XuPgo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jerry Goldsmith composed the iconic 1979 <em>Alien<\/em> score, known for its bleak and eerie soundscape to accompany the space horror. Even though his original score was heavily edited in the final movie, Goldsmith is admired for creating the movie\u2019s signature sounds with instruments such as an Indian conch horn, a didgeridoo, steel drums, and a serpent, and for using an echoplex tape delay effect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-t-he-monster-mash-by-bobby-boris-pickett\"><strong>\u2018T<\/strong>he Monster Mash\u2019  by Bobby <strong>\u2018<\/strong>Boris\u2019  Pickett<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bobby Pickett &quot;Monster Mash&quot;\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vNuVifA7DSU?start=51&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 1962 novelty song \u201cThe Monster Mash\u201d was composed by Bobby \u201cBoris\u201d Pickett and bandmate Lenny Capizzi, after an audience went wild over Pickett\u2019s impression of Boris Karloff, who played Frankenstein\u2019s monster in the 1930s films. The accompanying dance is a take on the \u201cMashed Potato\u201d dance craze, made famous by James Brown, and then used by Dee Dee Sharp for her song \u201cMashed Potato Time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen closely for the voice of Darlene Love, who is known for her work for a <em>different<\/em> holiday, in particular as the singer of \u201cChristmas (Baby Please Come Home).\u201d She sang backup vocals on the \u201cMonster Mash\u201d track as a member of the Blossoms. She didn&#8217;t think it would be a hit at the time it was recorded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think Bobby figured this song would be a hit either,\u201d she said in an interview with <em>Esquire<\/em>. \u201cI think they\u2019re going there with the idea that this is a cute song, let\u2019s record it. So, I don\u2019t need to understand it. If they play it, it will be a hit. If you haven\u2019t seen the original <em>Evil Dead<\/em>, directed by Sam Raimi . . . do it now!
