This is not the case in Neil Diercks\u2019 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/collaborative-songwriting?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Collaborative Songwriting<\/a><\/em> course at Berklee Online, where group projects are welcome and have been the catalyst for numerous successful music partnerships. This includes a group comprised of students Danielle Collavino, Jamie Dickinson, and Billy Henry, who took Diercks\u2019 course last year, and have decided to keep their remote songwriting dynamic going. Their first EP under the name <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.futureperfectsound.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Future Perfect Sound<\/a> is out now. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re different people from different parts of the world and we really just enjoy making music together,\u201d says Danielle. \u201cWhat\u2019s really great is the fact that everyone has so many different skills. There\u2019s such a versatility in the team that someone could come up with an idea, someone will come up with a melody, someone a groove, someone lyrics, and it changes as we write a song.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Danielle, who lives in London, has been a musician for two decades with piano as her primary instrument. A performing artist for most of his life, Jamie is an <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/music-degrees\/undergraduate\/interdisciplinary-music-studies-create-your-own-major?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Interdisciplinary Music Studies<\/a> major at Berklee Online living in Northeast England. Billy, from Austin, Texas, is a composer, professor, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/stardate.org\/radio\" target=\"_blank\">NPR radio host<\/a>, and before the shutdowns, he was a touring musician with the Chicks and Shakira.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in March, Billy performed on <em>The Ellen Show<\/em> with the Chicks. As he was about to board a plane to New York for <em>The Colbert Show, <\/em>he received a call from his road manager telling him to go home. His life as a touring musician came to a halt, which prompted him to enroll in Diercks\u2019 class to stay accountable for his songwriting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1151\" height=\"1361\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/BH_w_Telecaster-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15679\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Billy Henry brings his experience as a touring musician to the Future Perfect Sound project. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m terrible without deadlines,\u201d he says. \u201cIf I have a deadline, great. It\u2019s like, \u2018Okay. Write a song this week. Excellent.\u2019\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group of three were familiar with each other after previously having Diercks as their instructor for the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/songwriting-writing-hit-songs?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Songwriting: Writing Hit Songs<\/a> <\/em>course, but first collaborated as a trio about half way through the <em>Collaborative Songwriting<\/em> course when students are allowed to pick their own groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Course Overview: Collaborative Songwriting | Berklee Online\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gd_TAQgh8X0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">An overview of Neil Diercks\u2019 Collaborative Songwriting course at Berklee Online. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith Billy, Danielle, and Jamie, they got to know each other over that time and they really hit it off,\u201d says Diercks. \u201cYou see the value somebody else has because you see, \u2018Wow, that person brings something to the table. Billy joined in on Zoom. The session resulted in three songs that appear on the EP. The first song, \u201cLookin&#8217; for Love\u201d is a modern disco track.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-soundcloud wp-block-embed-soundcloud wp-embed-aspect-1-1 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lookin&#039; For Love by FUTURE PERFECT SOUND\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F967007572&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxheight=750&#038;maxwidth=500\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8220;Lookin&#8217; for Love&#8221; by Future Perfect Sound is their take on a modern disco track. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The next song \u201cNothin&#8217; to Prove\u201d is an upbeat blues-rock tune with a catchy guitar hook. The inspiration for it comes from the Netflix show <em>The Umbrella Academy<\/em>. Written with Elliot Page\u2019s character Vanya Hargreeves in mind, the song captures a \u201cYou can hurt me, but you won\u2019t break me,&#8221; type of feel says Billy. The group intends to pitch the song to the series. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-soundcloud wp-block-embed-soundcloud wp-embed-aspect-1-1 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Got Nothin&#039; to Prove by FUTURE PERFECT SOUND\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F970184980&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxheight=750&#038;maxwidth=500&#038;secret_token=s-X74Yv7aJglv\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8220;Got Nothin&#8217; to Prove&#8221; was written with the Netflix series <em>The Umbrella Academy<\/em> in mind. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The third song is titled \u201cEverybody\u2019s Going Nowhere Fast,\u201d which you might assume is speaking to an experience in lockdown, but is actually written for the HBO series <em>Euphoria<\/em>, which they also intend to send to the show. In the last few weeks in the course, Diercks teaches his students how to approach a television show, including how to find the right contacts and how to phrase your message. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-soundcloud wp-block-embed-soundcloud wp-embed-aspect-1-1 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Everybody&#039;s Going Nowhere Fast by FUTURE PERFECT SOUND\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F970129336&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxheight=750&#038;maxwidth=500&#038;secret_token=s-nL7zrmi9ALH\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Future Perfect Sound wrote &#8220;Everybody&#8217;s Going Nowhere Fast&#8221; for the HBO series <em>Euphoria.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the last few lessons, students start assembling a list of people working in the industry, from artists to writers to producers to record label people,\u201d says Diercks. \u201cI ask them, \u2018Who\u2019s out there in the industry that you feel would be useful to know and who could help you with your career?\u2019 So they assemble that list and I tell them how they contact somebody in a unique way so that they separate themselves. Rather than asking for favors, they\u2019re asking for advice. I\u2019ve seen just contact after contact made this way.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of whether \u201cEverybody\u2019s Going Nowhere Fast\u201d was written with the pandemic in mind or not, the trio can agree that their virtual collaborations have extended some of the needed structure from the class into their lives, which is welcome considering all three of them were sheltering in place during the time of this interview.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing able to write with Billy and Danielle on regular occasions, and work with lots of other people around the world, is allowing me to just cope and makes it feel like there\u2019s something going on, because obviously in lockdown it doesn\u2019t feel like that a lot of the time,\u201d says Jamie. \u201cThat\u2019s the main thing, is being able to talk and just share my passion with other people who are just as passionate about it.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/faculty\/neil-diercks?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">TAKE A SONGWRITING COURSE WITH NEIL DIERCKS<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Berklee Online students Danielle Collavino, Jamie Dickinson, and Billy Henry, who took Neil Diercks\u2019 &#8220;Collaborative Songwriting&#8221; course, kept their remote songwriting dynamic going.
