Recently, the Latvia-based Berklee Online student translated this emotion into music so successfully that he won the French National Film Scoring Competition\u2019s Original Soundtrack (OST) Challenge.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ost-challenge.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">OST Challenge<\/a> included more than 200 composers representing 30 countries from around the world. Pretty stiff competition, but Roman rose to the occasion, composing for comedies. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor me as a composer, it is very important that I like the film I\u2019m working with and these comedies were really brilliant in my opinion,\u201d says Roman. \u201cI enjoyed it a lot and the process of composing the soundtrack was very inspiring and pleasant.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2021 OST Challenge took place during the 43rd Clermont Ferrand International Short Film Festival, at the Clermont Opera where there was a public concert, as well as a jury of professional film composers. Each participant in the OST Challenge picks one or more of four categories and must compose for string orchestra. Roman chose to score for comedy in the fiction category. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"OSTC 2021 - G\u00e9n\u00e9rique\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/olLoA1-RIOI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The OST Challenge is now the most important film music competition in France.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Roman has pursued many endeavors from piano and percussion to production, arranging, and composition. Before he got his start in film scoring, he studied piano at a private studio in his home of Riga, Latvia. He then went on to study percussion at the Music Academy of Riga, where he earned his bachelor\u2019s degree and began studying classical composition under Latvian composer Romualds Kalson.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe most inspiring thing for me is to compose music that is part of the story,\u201d he says. \u201cSo, I decided to try writing film music.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Roman Falkenstein. Film Composer&#039;s Showreel\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Jo_aczqP67U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Roman\u2019s film composing showreel. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He struggled to find opportunities to learn film scoring in Russian, so when he came across Jack Freeman\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/film-scoring-101?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Film Scoring 101<\/a><\/em>, with Berklee Online, he jumped at the opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/sample-a-lesson?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">SAMPLE THE FILM SCORING 101 COURSE NOW!<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe course gave me these very necessary basics and helped me understand how they work in film music,\u201d says Roman. \u201cYou can be good at writing symphonies, you can compose opera, but film music is completely different.
