Most recognizable are Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s <em>Dangerously in Love<\/em>,<em> <\/em>and Gwen Stefani\u2019s <em>Love. Angel. Music. Baby<\/em>. After a long music career that has spanned two decades, Shalom is pursuing his bachelor\u2019s degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/music-degrees\/undergraduate\/music-business?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">music business<\/a> with Berklee Online, not because he\u2019s hoping to garner more platinum records with his name on them, but for his own development.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/shalom_miller_article_image_2021_2.jpg\" alt=\"Shalom's awards including gold, platinum, and multi-platinum records, Grammy awards, a diploma from the SAE institute, and more. \" class=\"wp-image-16567\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shalom&#8217;s awards including gold, platinum, and multi-platinum records, Grammy awards, a diploma from the SAE institute, and more. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not really thirsty or hurting for any type of long accolades at this point,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s really for me. I\u2019m just really stacking the deck for myself personally. I wanna see how far I can go, what I can achieve.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shalom\u2019s interest in music began at age four when he started playing drums at his church. He accompanied the choir and performed with big names in gospel such as John P. Kee and the Winans. His parents were also gospel singers, and his father produced the music his mother, Christine L. Easterling, released. Growing up around music production inspired him to try it himself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: It Won&amp;apos;t Be This Way Always\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/5v9wkImyC8lcT4EKiJvMzr?si=2382b9d5fb904f1b%EF%BB%BF&#038;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shalom\u2019s mother is gospel singer Christine L. Easterling. He rapped on her track \u201cIt Won\u2019t Be This Way Always\u201d from her 2003 album <em>A New Beginning<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI just grew up around it, looking at eight-track machines and compressors and things like that,\u201d says Shalom. \u201cWhen my dad would go upstairs to go to sleep, I\u2019d come downstairs and mess with all the settings. And then my mom would travel around to different studios. So I just took [those skills] with me and started writing songs in high school.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early 2000s, Shalom and his friend Matthew Irby, who goes by Major, began writing music together and called themselves Tha Beat Mizers. They attended a program called the Youth Entertainment Academy in Plainfield, New Jersey, where they learned the ins and outs of recording. Shalom admits that they would go to great lengths to make music during off hours.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe started going there every day,\u201d says Shalom. \u201cIt got so bad that we used to cut school and find ways to keep the studio door open, and sometimes we\u2019d go so far as unlatching the sliding windows so that we could crawl in. We got dedicated real quick.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shalom\u2019s big break came from Rashad Muhammad, whom he considers a mentor. Rashad is the owner of 4th Quarter Studios in East Orange, New Jersey, and has been the main recording, sound, and mixing engineer for Kool &amp; The Gang for the past 30 years. Rashad gave Shalom some professional work to do, engineering and mixing a track for the 2003 movie soundtrack <em><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/6i_uRRVx8AM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">The Fighting Temptations<\/a><\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"BEYONC\u00c9\ud83d\udc51, Missy Elliott, MC Lyte, &amp; Free - Fighting Temptations\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S1EKjRljZ44?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shalom worked on the track \u201cFighting Temptation\u201d by Beyonc\u00e9, Missy Elliott, MC Lyte, and Free for the movie <em>The Fighting Temptations<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While Shalom was working on the track, a representative from SoulDiggaz Entertainment entered the studio. SoulDiggaz is a production team that worked with Beyonc\u00e9, Destiny\u2019s Child, Missy Elliott, and other well known R&amp;B artists. As any good mentor would do, Rashad encouraged Shalom to play his beats in the background to grab the producer&#8217;s attention.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI just hit the play button and every so often you could see him [the producer] be like <em>woah<\/em>,\u201d he says. \u201cHe was like, \u2018Hey, is that you?\u2019 So that conversation led to me giving him a CD.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few months later, SoulDiggaz called up Shalom and Major, inviting them to come to the studio to work on drum loops that ended up on Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s first solo album, <em>Dangerously in Love<\/em>. At the time, Shalom didn\u2019t realize that songs like \u201cCrazy in Love\u201d would catapult Beyonc\u00e9 into a solo career that eclipsed Destiny\u2019s Child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beyonc\u00e9 - Crazy In Love ft. JAY Z\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ViwtNLUqkMY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shalom contributed to Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s multi-platinum album <em>Dangerously in Love<\/em> with songs like \u201cCrazy in Love.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDestiny\u2019s Child was everything at the time,\u201d says Shalom. \u201cIt was kind of like, <em>Okay, I hope her solo album does well! It\u2019s not going to do as well as Destiny\u2019s Child<\/em>. But who would have known.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After <em>Dangerously in Love<\/em>, Shalom and Major signed to SoulDiggaz where they got to write for a rapper who they always dreamed of working with: Missy Elliott.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt the time, it was all about Timbaland and Missy,\u201d says Shalom. \u201cThat\u2019s who we wanted to be, that\u2019s who we wanted to sound like. That was it. Every day after school, we\u2019d be like, \u2018One day we\u2019re going to work with Missy.\u2019 We couldn\u2019t believe that it actually came to fruition.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to Missy Elliott, Shalom and Major worked with Gwen Stefani, TLC, Pink, Fantasia, Alicia Keys, Lyfe Jennings, Ashley Simpson, and Jay Sean, while signed to SoulDiggaz. In 2006, Shalom and Major decided to part ways professionally, but they still remain close. Currently Major is the music director of his church in New Jersey, and remains active in music production in LA.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMajor and I are still very much friends,\u201d says Shalom. \u201cWe talk on a regular basis. His son and my son are pretty much the same age. I call his son my nephew, so we\u2019re very much friends if not closer. We consider each other family.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From SoulDiggaz, Shalom went over to Bad Boy Records in New York, where he worked with artists such as Day26, Cheri Dennis, Yung Joc, B5, and basically all the artists on MTV\u2019s <em>Making the Band<\/em> series. He also started making connections at Jive Records, which represented artists like Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, and Britney Spears.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/podcast-episode-three-pt2-prince-charles-alexander\/?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\">Listen to Berklee course author and instructor Prince Charles Alexander talk about his time at Bad Boy Records on the \u2018Music is My Life\u2019 podcast<\/a>. <\/strong><\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was on cloud nine,\u201d he says. \u201cI just got off the Missy situation. I got a great deal with Jive. I can go to Bad Boy and get work whenever I want. Not only that, but I\u2019m negotiating a record label deal with Universal for myself.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything was looking bright until the 2008 financial crisis hit and his projects started to feel the squeeze.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSlowly but surely I was getting phone call after phone call, \u2018Hey, we\u2019re going to have to slow up on this, pause on that,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cAnd then the Bad Boy situation was the final straw: Day26 broke up. I was going to New York every day, going to the studio, writing songs for them. That was kind of the last thing I was holding onto. Then that fell through and I said, \u2018I gotta do something different. The New York scene is kind of collapsing in on itself.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He tried LA, Atlanta, and decided to give Nashville a shot with some encouragement from a friend. Shalom says the conversation went something like:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018What? Honky-tonk Town? What am I going to do in Nashville? I do pop, R&amp;B, and hip-hop.\u2019 He said, \u2018No, man you don\u2019t understand. It\u2019s all here for you.\u2019\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What his friend meant is all the major labels are in Nashville. After a tour of music row, Shalom was set on relocating from New Jersey. Upon arriving in Nashville, he attended the SAE Institute of Technology, and married his girlfriend, who had made the move with him. Soon after, they had a son and Shalom was working in the licensing department of BMI.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI got a family now and I gotta keep the checks rolling in and it was good money,\u201d he says about BMI. \u201cIt was really good money for the connections. I got to work with Robert De Niro. I got to work with Pharrell and T.I. and Tiny. I learned so much about the financial industry and how it worked. I got to see Pharrell\u2019s royalties for \u2018Happy\u2019 and I\u2019m like, \u2018okay let me get back to my music.\u2019\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Stream Shalom\u2019s music on <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/7JUHg7KeD2Li8xrJtcAIhN?si=Rg90ew-TSo2I8z16S5Vj9g&amp;dl_branch=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Spotify<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/us\/artist\/shalom\/1495935870\" target=\"_blank\">Apple Music<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017, Shalom started Power Move Management Group, where he works with up-and-coming songwriters and producers. Right now he\u2019s representing White Noise, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/en_asia\/news\/music\/listen-to-narelle-khengs-new-single-just-shut-up-2888287\" target=\"_blank\">Narelle Kheng<\/a>, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/rriley\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">RRILEY<\/a>, who just released a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"new single (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/vrSaErOnLIg\" target=\"_blank\">new single<\/a>. For a while he worked with country singer Willie Jones.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m super proud of him,\u201d says Shalom about Jones. \u201cI actually brought him to Nashville and I put on his first show here. He just did <em>Jimmy Fallon<\/em> and he&#8217;s been written up in <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/willie-jones-country-music-hip-hop-846675\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rolling Stone<\/a><\/em>. He\u2019s blowing up and doing his thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n https:\/\/youtu.be\/VvhaGuTyqcs\n<\/div><figcaption>Shalom\u2019s client Willie Jones performing on <em>Late Night with Jimmy Fallon<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside his business, Shalom is enjoying being a part of the Berklee network and preparing to move into the next phase in his career.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI always wanted to get my degree and at this point I really just want to stack the deck,\u201d he says. \u201cI got the awards, I got the Grammys, I got cool things. I know what it was like to make good money and lose it. So at this point right now, it\u2019s really just adding value to myself.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a
