Basically, he\u2019s someone who is not accustomed to standing idly by in times of chaos. Just one week into the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, Lumley founded the nonprofit Horns United, with a mission to raise money for COVID relief and infectious disease research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI said a really simple prayer, and just said, \u2018What can I do? How can I help?\u2019 And two hours later, I was talking with the first horn player of the Chicago Symphony,\u201d says Lumley, whose specialty is the French horn. \u201cI just started putting out feelers, putting out contacts. I was cold calling. And I ran across some of the most wonderful people in the horn world.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide\" style=\"grid-template-columns:32% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"1064\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Marc-Lumley-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16622 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Horns United offers online French horn master classes, lessons, and concerts, all taught by master hornists and attended by players around the world. As Horns United grew from Lumley\u2019s solo mission to a team that comprises seven admins, six composers, and more than 80 instructors, Lumley realized that he needed to grow his production chops alongside the nonprofit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-small-font-size\"><em>Horns United Founder Marc Lumley<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had asked 23 muti-Grammy award-winners if they wanted to record, and I thought to myself, \u2018I better learn how to record,\u2019\u201d Lumley says with a laugh.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This prompted him to enroll in Berklee Online\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/certificates\/music-production-and-technology-advanced-professional?pid=8023&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-promotion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Music Production and Technology<\/a> advanced certificate program and after just one semester, Lumley says he feels much more proficient with implementing recording technology and he even arranged a recording of the final two and a half minutes of Gustav Mahler\u2019s Symphony no. 1.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gustav Mahler. I hurt my back pretty seriously when I was in the Air Force Band, so I was able to use my VA benefits to get to school.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/military\/overview?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">LEARN ABOUT BERKLEE ONLINE\u2019S MILITARY BENEFITS<\/a><\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date, Horns United has raised more than $13,500 for COVID research, and has instructors from the Boston Symphony, the Metropolitan Opera, the New York Philharmonic, the Minnesota Orchestra, and many more orchestras. Instructor Ernie Tovar Torres, the fourth horn of the Philadelphia Orchestra, was eager to help Lumley with Horns United because he runs his own nonprofit, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Oneworldhorn\/?hc_ref=ARQWrMsGdyX3zgrhovEQbxmk5_D6BSvGArCqmUknA2yYUFQG_DDkkv_aHhaXyDRdBo4&amp;fref=nf&amp;__tn__=kC-R\" target=\"_blank\">One World Horn<\/a>, to help Latinx kids learn the French horn.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_0411.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16606\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ernie Tovar Torres, the fourth horn of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and an instructor for Horns United. He is also founder of the nonprofit One World Horn. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe realized that we\u2019re both trying to do the same thing from different parts of the world,\u201d he says. \u201cWhatever name you want to call it, One World Horn, Horns United, horn players have been sticking together before the pandemic and during the pandemic. We\u2019re all trying to do the same thing: Play music, touch people\u2019s lives, and inspire the next generation of musicians and horn players.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Horns United instructor Erik Ralske, a principal horn player for the Metropolitan Opera, says that Horns United was a welcome distraction during a difficult time. The Met Opera made <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/15\/arts\/music\/metropolitan-opera-pandemic.html\" target=\"_blank\">national headlines<\/a> for furloughing their orchestra and canceling their entire 2021 season. Ralske says he is now compensated through an arrangement where he makes a fraction of his salary, and that the 2021\/2022 season is expected to start this September. But the pandemic severely impacted him and his colleagues. He says 40 percent of the orchestra relocated outside of New York City because they couldn\u2019t afford housing, and many members either retired or moved on. Two members of the orchestra even passed away from COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1139\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-14-at-3.22.59-PM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16608\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Erik Ralske, a principal horn player for the Metropolitan Opera, gives a Zoom masterclass for Horns United. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI do consider myself lucky within the profession, just because I\u2019m not at the start of my career,\u201d says Ralske. \u201cYou\u2019ve gotta be compassionate to those who are less fortunate. And we try to do our best online to at least provide people with that sense of humanity that music performance provides. It\u2019s the oneness of humanity that we have to keep at the forefront, and I\u2019m thrilled to be a part of a united effort in whatever small way I can.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lumley, Torres, and Ralske share the same positive feelings about having attended summer band camps in their youth, and feel badly that young players have to miss out on that experience because of the pandemic. Horns United offered Cor Camp, which for a requested donation of $145 offered 75 students month-long expert instruction from nearly 40 master hornists.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou live for those summer camps if you\u2019re into music as a high school student,\u201d says Ralske. \u201cYou got to find your people. So going to these camps, being around like-minded people was a big deal. Marc had this brilliant idea of doing it online.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though the pandemic is looking much better in the US and other countries with vaccination rollouts, Lumley says there is still plenty more work to do raising money for the aftermath of the virus. Right now, Horns United is encouraging its patrons to donate directly to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universityhealthsystem.com\/ways-to-give\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">University Health System<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/makeagift.ucsf.edu\/site\/SPageServer?pagename=A1_API_GeneralGivingForm&amp;AppealCode=WBFAQ\" target=\"_blank\">UC San Francisco Medical Research<\/a>, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/philanthropy.mayoclinic.org\/page.aspx?pid=1523&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxoOw-LTq7wIVCtvACh0VZQKfEAAYASAAEgLqdfD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\">Mayo Clinic<\/a>.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe tell people to please keep donating,\u201d says Lumley. \u201cThere\u2019s going to be mutations. Yes, we have the vaccines but we don\u2019t know, are we going to need boosters in six months? A year?
