The new album <em>Voyage<\/em>, and announcement of a 2022 digital concert is eliciting reactions, from horror to delight: Horror for those who shudder at the thought of a performance by ABBA-tars (yes, that\u2019s what they\u2019re called); and delight for the multiple generations of fans who fell in love with the music of ABBA, whether it was on the radio in the \u201970s, or on TikTok over the past few years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ABBA Voyage: The Journey Is About To Begin\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OE8aSnhzTfQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The members of ABBA share the news of their digital concert experience coming to London in 2022.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the group has been dormant since 1982, their songs have been as ubiquitous in pop culture as if they were still making music, by means of movies, musicals, and viral videos. Here we\u2019ll look at the cultural touchpoints that have brought ABBA to releasing their new album <em>Voyage<\/em> in November 2021, and their new interactive concert coming to London this May. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-abba-members\">ABBA Members<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First we\u2019ll start with the members who make up the group. ABBA is an acronym for the first names of the four members: Agnetha Faltskog, Bj\u00f6rn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The band comprised two sets of couples: Agnetha married Bj\u00f6rn in 1969, and Benny married Anni-Frid in 1978. Both couples <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/entertainment\/music\/1307218\/ABBA-divorces-Why-ABBA-break-up-benny-bjorn-agnetha-anni-frid\" target=\"_blank\">divorced<\/a> in the early \u201980s, which contributed to the breakup of ABBA, but also inspired heart-wrenching classics like \u201cThe Winner Takes It All.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ABBA - The Winner Takes It All (1980) HD 0815007\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iyIOl-s7JTU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Agnetha F\u00e4ltskog singing \u201cThe Winner Takes It All,\u201d which was inspired by her divorce from Bj\u00f6rn Ulvaeus. <br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Each ABBA member went on to have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/columns\/pop\/8395851\/abba-timeline-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">solo career<\/a> (especially Andersson and Ulvaeus whose musical theater careers you will read about further down). ABBA had opportunities to reunite in the early 2000s, but declined to do so until now, even turning down million-dollar deals along the way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/songwriting?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">STUDY SONGWRITING AT BERKLEE ONLINE<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-abba-and-eurovision\">ABBA and Eurovision<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Undoubtedly one of the most prominent acts to win Eurovision, ABBA claimed first place victory for Sweden at the 1974 competition, launching their global success. Eurovision is an international song contest that has been running since 1956. ABBA dazzled Europe with their song \u201cWaterloo,\u201d draped in their signature ornate outfits, which were actually a way to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2014\/03\/02\/284742199\/abbas-1970s-costumes-decidedly-worth-the-tax-break\" target=\"_blank\">save on Swedish taxes<\/a>, because they could claim they were wearing costumes that did not serve a purpose in everyday life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube is-provider-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ABBA - Waterloo (Eurovision Song Contest 1974 First Performance)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4XJBNJ2wq0Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">ABBA and their winning performance at the 1974 Eurovision song contest. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-abba-and-pop-superstardom\">ABBA and Pop Superstardom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After Eurovision, ABBA became one of the most successful acts in pop history. Nine of their songs reached No. 1 in the UK during their most active years, with nearly a dozen more charting hits. They\u2019ve also released a number of gold and platinum-selling compilation albums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dancing-queen\"><strong>\u2018Dancing Queen\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The group&#8217;s only No. 1 hit in the US was &#8220;Dancing Queen,&#8221; which arrived just in time for the height of disco in 1976. <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> magazine included the track on its list of \u201c500 Greatest Songs of All Time.\u201d Lyngstad was moved to tears when then-fiancee Andersson first played the song for her. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ABBA - Dancing Queen (Official Music Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xFrGuyw1V8s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">ABBA&#8217;s &#8220;Dancing Queen&#8221; is considered one of the greatest songs of all time by <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> magazine. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Producer <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/faculty\/sean-slade?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\">Sean Slade<\/a> uses \u201cDancing Queen\u201d as an example in his <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/music-degrees\/graduate\/music-production?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">graduate-level<\/a> music production course at Berklee Online, calling it \u201cmelodic mastery.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat I found is the beauty of this melody isn\u2019t based on what you\u2019d expect\u2014it\u2019s a limited amount of repetitive notes and phrases (easy to sing along to!)\u2014but the chord progression supports these notes so skillfully that it feels more complicated than it really is,\u201d writes Slade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The song also maintained relevance through the decades courtesy of unlikely covers by <a aria-label=\"U2 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0TXnOaXTWn4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U2<\/a> and <a aria-label=\"Metallica (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=U7tFSkrvOj0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Metallica<\/a>, as well as faithful tribute from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WKzzxnqFz60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Miley Cyrus and Maren Morris<\/a>, to say nothing of <a aria-label=\"MGMT admitting they used the song as a rhythmic blueprint for one of their biggest hits (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/fLJuBa30DFg?t=315\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MGMT admitting they used the song as a rhythmic blueprint for one of their biggest hits<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-abba-breakup-and-dormancy\">ABBA Breakup and Dormancy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Though ABBA have not been active as a group for nearly 40 years, they never actually broke up or made an official announcement. They did, however, stop performing and touring together as ABBA in 1982, saying that it was difficult to be in a band together after the divorces, for obvious reasons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-abba-in-australian-film\">ABBA in Australian Film<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The 1990s is considered a bright decade for Australian film, with movies like <em>Muriel\u2019s Wedding<\/em> and <em>Priscilla, Queen of the Desert<\/em>, both of which feature the music of ABBA. Both films have stood the test of time and have become cult favorites. They depict characters who are treated as outcasts and show how they find acceptance by being themselves and trusting in friendship. The movie is about drag queens who travel across the Australian Outback to perform at a remote casino. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mamma-mia-the-musical-and-movies\">\u2018Mamma Mia!\u2019 The Musical and Movies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after ABBA went on hiatus in the \u201980s, Andersson and Ulvaeus started writing music for theater together, in collaboration with lyricist and author, Tim Rice. Together they wrote the musical <em>Chess, <\/em>which premiered in 1984. After 10 years of persuasion, the producer of <em>Chess<\/em> convinced Andersson and Ulvaeus to help adapt the music of ABBA for stage in the jukebox musical <em>Mamma Mia! <\/em>Both were heavily involved in the production, which premiered in London in 1999 and went on to have a 14-year run on Broadway.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2008, the musical was turned into a movie starring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried. A decade later the cast returned with the addition of Cher in <em>Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again<\/em>. Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)\u201d featured in thousands of videos. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube is-provider-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"DANCING QUEEN ONE BREATH CHALLENGE \/\/ TIKTOK COMPILATION 2021 - PART 1\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ram7cqI0Yh4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Viral TikTok dances that feature the ABBA song \u201cGimme! (A Man After Midnight).\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But it was a trending mashup of \u201cChiquitita\u201d and a sound bite from <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Twilight (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@twibytez\/video\/6978907618983103750?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1\" target=\"_blank\">Twilight<\/a><\/em> that put ABBA on the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"TikTok map (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@abba\/video\/7003072573382593797?sender_device=pc&amp;sender_web_id=7007424207030109701&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;is_copy_url=0\" target=\"_blank\">TikTok map<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since landing on TikTok, Andersson and Ulvaeus have been sharing old videos and duet challenges, where they invite users to record themselves singing over Andersson playing the piano part to an ABBA song. It\u2019s also where they ultimately revealed that ABBA would be making a comeback, and detailed info about their live show and new album. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/tiktok-how-to-get-your-music-discovered\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"READ: HOW TO GET YOUR MUSIC DISCOVERED ON TIKTOK (opens in a new tab)\">READ: HOW TO GET YOUR MUSIC DISCOVERED ON TIKTOK<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-abba-and-voyage\">ABBA and \u2018Voyage\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In early September, ABBA shared two singles from the new album <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/abba-voyage-reunion-new-album-tour-show-tickets-3035924\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Voyage<\/a><\/em>, which will be released November 5, 2021. Already the album has broken pre-sale records in the UK. The two new songs will be a part of a 22-song setlist in the digital show of the same name. The band has been preparing for the reunion for the past few years, but COVID had delayed the announcement. The show is made in collaboration with Industrial Light &amp; Magic and will feature a 10-piece band at the new ABBA Arena at London\u2019s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ABBA - I Still Have Faith In You\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pAzEY1MfXrQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The new ABBA single &#8220;I Still Have Faith In You.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you\u2019ll be streaming the new album this November, booking a flight to London this May, or neither, there is something for musicians to learn from ABBA\u2019s ability to maintain and gain fans through their 40-year dormancy. The hype surrounding their long-awaited comeback was nurtured by years of diversifying their work through sync licensing and adapting to social media platforms like TikTok, as well as exploring new technologies like digital concerts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who are horrified by ABBA-tars, just look at the numbers of listens and views these two new songs have brought in: nearly 21 million on Spotify, and 30 million on YouTube.
