Scroll all the way down to listen to this list on Spotify. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sylvan-esso-nbsp-nbsp\">Sylvan Esso&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who have been following Sylvan Esso for the past decade might say that the electronic duo from Durham, North Carolina has been criminally underrated for too long. They may not have won this year for \u201cBest Dance\/Electronic Music Album\u201d for their project <em>Free Love<\/em>,&nbsp;but&nbsp;that&nbsp;does&nbsp;not&nbsp;give&nbsp;you&nbsp;an&nbsp;excuse&nbsp;for&nbsp;missing&nbsp;out on this&nbsp;great&nbsp;music. Sylvan Esso has a huge following and are staples at festivals like Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, and Bonnaroo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sylvan Esso - Rooftop Dancing\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cbuZM9vmeZc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-black-pumas\">Black Pumas<br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Black Pumas is a psychedelic soul band from Austin, Texas, formed by singer\/songwriter Eric Burton, and guitarist\/producer Adrian Quesada. Burton honed his stage presence busking all over the western US, until he landed in Austin, where he connected with Quesada through a mutual friend. They released their self-titled debut album in 2019, which was a pretty immediate success, earning four Grammy nominations over the past two years, including a nomination for \u201cRecord of the Year\u201d in 2021. They went on to record a deluxe version of the album, which has put them in the running for \u201cBest Rock Performance\u201d and \u201cBest Rock Album\u201d at this year\u2019s Grammy Awards. Though they won neither award, it is a stellar work that is worth checking out.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Black Pumas - Know You Better (Live from Capitol Studio A \/ Presented by Genesis GV80)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x_a4gex-M0E?start=30&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-arooj-aftab\">Arooj Aftab<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After her cover of Leonard Cohen\u2019s \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/m_Lub8LRbLo\" target=\"_blank\">Hallelujah<\/a>\u201d went viral in the early aughts, Arooj Aftab moved from Pakistan to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music. More than a decade later, she\u2019s a singer and composer nominated for \u201cBest New Artist\u201d and \u201cBest Global Music Performance\u201d for her song \u201cMohabbat,\u201d which President Barack Obama included on his 2021 summer playlist. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Olivia Rodrig (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/how-did-olivia-rodrigo-become-famous\/?pid=8023&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-promotion\" target=\"_blank\">Olivia Rodrigo<\/a> won the first category, but Aftab won \u201cBest Global Music Performance,\u201d beating other top-notch nominees like Femi Kuti, Yo-Yo Ma, and Ang\u00e9lique Kidjo. First, she released her best-selling memoir, <em>Crying in H Mart<\/em>, about the death of her mother, which is set to be adapted for film. Then she released her third full-length Japanese Breakfast album, <em>Jubilee<\/em>. She says that the moment she started writing the album she knew what she wanted to call it because it is \u201ca celebration of the passage of time\u2014a festival to usher in the hope of a new era in brilliant technicolor.\u201d Though she did not win either Grammy for \u201cBest New Artist\u201d or \u201cBest Alternative Music Album,\u201d Japanese Breakfast\u2019s <em>Jubilee <\/em>is an act of rebellion to find joy in the midst of sorrow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Japanese Breakfast - Savage Good Boy (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mcoC5ZgaFjY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-arlo-parks\">Arlo Parks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before Arlo Parks went on to write her Grammy-nominated album, <em>Collapsed in Sunbeams, <\/em>she was coming to terms with the fact that she wouldn\u2019t be able to join Haylie Williams on her 2020 tour, which was canceled due to Covid. Parks had only started performing gigs the year prior with two highly-regarded EPs that were getting decent airplay. At the height of lockdown in London, then 20-year-old Parks rented an Airbnb where she recorded her debut album in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/entertainment-arts-55918518\" target=\"_blank\">three weeks<\/a>. With lyrics that reflect the isolation of the time it was recorded, a driving R&amp;B beat, and a nylon string guitar, this work earned her nominations for \u201cBest New Artist\u201d and \u201cBest Alternative Music Album,\u201d neither of which she won this year, but <em>Collapsed in Sunbeams <\/em>still deserves&nbsp;your&nbsp;attention.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Arlo Parks - Green Eyes (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ddjr5KDqYGA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-snoh-aalegra\">Snoh Aalegra<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Snoh Aalegra made the top of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tylerthecreator\/status\/1476965401938448384?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1476965401938448384%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.complex.com%2Fmusic%2Ftyler-the-creator-favorite-songs-of-2021-list-kanye-baby-keem-thanks-beautiful-year%2F\" target=\"_blank\">Tyler, The Creator\u2019s<\/a> list of favorite tracks of the year, and it\u2019s not only because they collaborated on two songs for her Grammy-nominated album <em>Temporary Highs in the Violet Skies. <\/em>The Iranian\/Swedish singer with a soulful Sade-like sound has been releasing music under the name Snoh since 2014 (previously Sheri), and her 2017 debut album <em>Feels<\/em> caught the attention of Prince, who mentored her for two years before he passed. This was the first year that she was nominated for the US Grammy Awards, and was also up for \u201cBest R&amp;B Performance.\u201d Though she did not win either of these categories, you will likely be hearing more Grammy-nominated works from her in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Snoh Aalegra - VIOLET SKIES (Visualizer)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KboeThRnpBo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lucky-daye\">Lucky Daye<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From growing up in a cult, to surviving Hurricane Katrina, to competing on Season 4 of <em>American Idol<\/em>, Lucky Daye has lived quite a life. His Grammy nominations have been <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/pVYrp_xRlNM?t=38\" target=\"_blank\">a long time coming<\/a>, and he was up for \u200b\u200b\u201cBest Traditional R&amp;B Performance,\u201d which he won, for his second full-length project <em>Table for Two<\/em>, and nominated for \u201cBest Traditional R&amp;B Performance,\u201d which went to H.E.R. Just in the past year, he\u2019s been busy collaborating with Khalid, Alicia Keys, Earth, Wind &amp; Fire, and many more. He released his highly-anticipated album <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/6eiCnBFhY8yvhLjZzjIsxQ?si=nmnWflWJSQyy1BF_ClZROA\" target=\"_blank\">Candy Drip<\/a><\/em> in March 2022 and kicked off his North American tour on April 4. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lucky Daye - How Much Can A Heart Take (Lyric Video) ft. Yebba\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FjlwJwhRMd4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hiatus-kaiyote\">Hiatus Kaiyote<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hiatus Kaiyote may have lost the \u201cBest Progressive R&amp;B Album\u201d Grammy to Lucky Daye, but this jazz\/funk band from Melbourne, Australia may have won something more prestigious. They have been praised by the neo-soul queen herself, Erykah Badu. It\u2019s been almost six years since the band released their last Grammy-nominated album, after singer and guitarist, Naomi Saalfield, underwent treatment for breast cancer. She has since recovered and released Hiatus Kaiyote\u2019s 2021 album <em>Mood Valiant, <\/em>which emanates vitality and a new outlook on life. In a <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/27\/arts\/music\/hiatus-kaiyote-mood-valiant.html\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a><\/em> interview, Saalfield said \u201cIt was actually a really powerful place to record from. I know what it is I am meant to do with my life and I\u2019m going to do it as long as I\u2019m here.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hiatus Kaiyote - &#039;Red Room&#039; (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p46Tm9-7i7E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mickey-guyton\">Mickey Guyton<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mickey Guyton captured the world\u2019s attention at the height of the 2020 wave of the BLM movement with her song, \u201cBlack Like Me,\u201d for which she was nominated for \u201cBest Country Solo Performance\u201d in 2021. She was the first Black woman to be nominated in the country category, and continues to break new ground, bringing lyrics of empowerment and solidarity to country music. The same is true this year for her first full-length album, <em>Remember Her Name, <\/em>which had potential to sweep the country category for best solo performance, song, and album. But unfortunately Mickey Guyton happened to be in all of those same categories with Chris Stapleton, who ended up sweeping them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mickey Guyton - Remember Her Name (Official Music Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gOrMnLoZWm0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nathy-peluso\">Nathy Peluso<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nathy Peluso won the 2021 Latin Grammy for \u201cBest Alternative Music Album\u201d for <em>Calambre,<\/em> and there was a good chance she&#8217;d win in the same category at this year\u2019s US Grammy Awards. Alas she lost to Juanes. Nevertheless, her fresh sound combines hip-hop and funk beats, jazzy-pop vocals, and Latin lyrics and horns. This is Peluso\u2019s first full-length studio album and her streaming numbers are massive, but mostly coming from South American countries. It\u2019s only a matter of time before her popularity drifts up to North America, and the rest of the world really. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NATHY PELUSO - SANA SANA\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JqJBIPE5Trk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-allison-russell\">Allison Russell<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Allison Russell has been making music for the past two decades under folk\/roots music projects such as Po\u2019 Girl, Birds of Chicago, and Our Native Daughters. This past year, she stepped into the spotlight as a solo artist with her debut album, <em>Outside Child<\/em>, a courageous and vulnerable album influenced by the abuse she overcame growing up. Russell thanks Brandi Carlile for getting the word out about <em>Outside Child<\/em>, saying in a <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/music\/news\/allison-russell-feature-interview-1235136736\/\" target=\"_blank\">Variety<\/a><\/em> interview that Carlile made a call to Fantasy Records, who signed her almost immediately. It\u2019s no wonder that this body of work was so instantly embraced, as it shows that music can be a refuge. Who cares if she did not win any of these categories. Listen to her now, and you can still brag that you knew about her back when.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Allison Russell - Nightflyer (Official Music Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RNJgwj8d9eo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cedric-burnside\">Cedric Burnside<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cedric Burnside comes from a long line of Mississippi hill-country blues musicians, building upon the legacy of his grandfather, R.L. Burnside, and his father, drummer Calvin Jackson. He has been playing the blues for three decades, and in 2021, he was the recipient of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/arts.ms.gov\/mississippi-hill-country-blues-musician-cedric-burnside-named-nea-national-heritage-fellow\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Heritage Fellowship<\/a>, an honor presented by the National Endowment for the Arts. His album, <em>I Be Trying,<\/em> won the \u201cBest Traditional Blues Album\u201d and will help anyone understand what the genre is about lyrically, musically, and
