{"id":18013,"date":"2022-02-03T11:44:40","date_gmt":"2022-02-03T16:44:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/?p=18013"},"modified":"2026-01-19T17:14:22","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T22:14:22","slug":"alex-halloran-starts-and-sells-help-the-bear-record-label","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/alex-halloran-starts-and-sells-help-the-bear-record-label\/","title":{"rendered":"Alex Halloran Starts and Sells Help the Bear Record Label"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-building-superfans-and-revenue-alex-halloran-s-approach-to-artist-management-and-fan-engagement\">Building Superfans and Revenue: Alex Halloran\u2019s Approach to Artist Management and Fan Engagement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In May 2020, Alex Halloran graduated Berklee Online\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/music-degrees\/graduate\/music-business?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">music business master\u2019s degree program<\/a>, ready and eager for whatever opportunities came his way; however, at this point in time he was searching in the worst job market of the past decade due to Covid. While looking for his new 9-5, he decided to turn his 5-11 passion project\u2014managing his two friends, hip-hop artists Yung Xander and Davis James\u2014into a real company: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/agdentertainment.com\/help-the-bear\" target=\"_blank\">Help the Bear Records<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mystikal&#039;s &quot;On Da Spot&quot; [Freestyle] For Invasion Radio With DJ Green Lantern &amp; Simone Amelia Jordan\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rlUvH7qL_jQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The name \u201cHelp the Bear\u201d comes from a freestyle rap by Mystikal that took place on <em>Hip-Hop Nation<\/em> in 2012, and resurfaced in 2020 as a TikTok trend. \u201cThe way he yells \u2018help the bear\u2019 always cracked me up ever since I saw it, and I just love the energy and passion he said it with,\u201d says Halloran.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI created Help the Bear Records as an email address to make myself look more professional when reaching out to people on behalf of my friends, my artists, things like that,\u201d says Halloran. \u201cI didn\u2019t initially have the intention of making it anything beyond that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Halloran might not have had the intention of making Help the Bear anything beyond a side-hustle, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/main.agdentertainment.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Another Great Day (AGD) Entertainment<\/a> did. Less than a year later, the Nashville-based company bought Help the Bear Records, making Halloran their program manager, responsible for operating their artist development in New York. He still has creative control over his business, and can focus on managing Yung Xander and Davis James. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat that did is just, provide me an opportunity to go full-time with this and really put my full attention on my artists,\u201d says Halloran. \u201cIt\u2019s something that I\u2019ve dreamed about since I started doing this at 17.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Halloran grew up three houses down from Yung Xander (whose real name is Alex Collins) in Brookefield, Connecticut. I saw him level up so much, and I needed to as well on the business end. His work ethic really inspired me to do so.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earning his master\u2019s degree from Berklee was a big way that Halloran leveled up, and it caught the attention of hip-hop artist Davis James, who had collaborated with Yung Xander before.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDavis knew I was at Berklee getting a degree in music business, so he started reaching out to me, asking questions,\u201d says Halloran. \u201c\u2018Should I do this?\u2019 \u2018Should I do that?\u2019 So I was kind of advising him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s when Halloran started managing James as well as Yung Xander, and then suggested that the two artists collaborate on some projects. This resulted in the 2022 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/0Td6q034E4FIra1jBjyQPI?si=66rxIytMQ7WUsgtpAFAVWw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Help the Bear EP<\/a><\/em>. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Yung Xander &amp; Davis James - &quot;Habit&quot; (OFFICIAL AUDIO)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rljrN91QIsE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Yung Xander and Davis James\u2019 collaboration on the song \u201cHabit\u201d from the 2022 <em>Help the Bear EP<\/em>. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Halloran says that one of the most helpful courses that he took in his master\u2019s program was <em><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/music-business-revenue-streams?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Music Business Revenue Streams<\/a><\/em>, because it taught him that the fan experience is most important from a business perspective.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI always tell people in my meetings with artists, one of the first things I learned in that class was artists are gonna make the most money off of merch sales and ticket sales,\u201d he says. \u201cSo the big thing I focus on working with my artists is we need to build super fans, people that are gonna come and pay money, because that\u2019s the quickest way you\u2019re gonna build revenue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While revenue is important for a growing business, the Help the Bear team knows it\u2019s not possible without their fans, which is why Halloran and his artists make their online community a priority; responding to every DM that comes through on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/helpthebearrecords\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">social media<\/a>, sending fans exclusive clips of unreleased music, and encouraging these fans to connect with one another. You\u2019ll notice that their latest releases feature images of real fan DMs, to show fans that they are listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Yung Xander - Pieces (OFFICIAL AUDIO)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QH_x-QqKY3c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Yung Xander\u2019s latest single \u201cPieces.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou cannot be too cool for your fans,\u201d says Halloran. \u201cThese are the people who are supporting us, so I will do anything I can to make sure they feel appreciated by our team. It really is simple, in my mind.
