He enrolled in Berklee Online\u2019s undergraduate <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/music-degrees\/undergraduate\/guitar-performance?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Guitar Performance degree program<\/a> as a springboard to a doctorate degree in Musical Arts when he learned that McNally Smith\u2014<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2017\/12\/19\/571997969\/minnesota-music-college-closes-abruptly-and-students-scramble-to-find-schools\" target=\"_blank\">which closed in 2017<\/a>\u2014lacked the accreditation for him to progress to a graduate program. Needless to say, Born knows a lot about guitar, and could pass many of his undergraduate Berklee courses with flying colors. Even so, that would take time and money, neither of which anybody wants to spend when they don\u2019t have to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI got a lot of practice and experience and eventually decided that I wanted to do things my own way, so I started Rockwell Music School,\u201d says Born. \u201cI teach piano, as well as guitar, ukulele, bass\u2014anything with strings and frets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many students with a significant amount of life experience in their area of study, Born took advantage of <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/degrees\/about\/undergraduate-prior-learning-credit?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Prior Learning Credits<\/a> at Berklee Online, which allows students to forgo up to 30 credits\u2014that could be up to 10 courses that the student doesn\u2019t have to spend time or money taking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBerklee jumped in <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/rock-on-berklee-online-class-of-2018?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">when McNally shut down<\/a>, and they just seemed to have a really open, positive attitude about the whole thing; they really wanted to work with McNally students to figure out how to get them a degree,\u201d says Born. \u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to go to Berklee and it\u2019s one step toward reaching my goals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, Born has been approved for 18 prior learning credits, and counting. Although earning another bachelor\u2019s degree is not an ideal situation, Born was also able to <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/degrees\/about\/undergraduate-degree-transfer-credits?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">transfer<\/a> in 60 credits from McNally Smith. That has left him with only 42 Berklee Online credits to complete his bachelor\u2019s degree, compared to 120. Born\u2019s advice for Berklee Online students who are looking to earn prior learning credit is to keep a thorough record of your experiences, whether it\u2019s the physical or digital copy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/degrees\/about\/undergraduate-degree-transfer-credits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">REQUEST A TRANSFER EVALUATION FROM BERKLEE ONLINE<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFortunately I saved all of my homework and paperwork from the stuff I did at McNally and was able to dig that up and say, \u2018okay this fits here in this curriculum,\u2019\u201d says Born. \u201cAnd it\u2019s been good that I\u2019ve been teaching all this stuff too, because that\u2019s a real-life practical application that I can always point to in any of my prior learning portfolios.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to earn prior learning credits at Berklee Online, students must take a few steps upfront that will save them time and money in the long run. First, students must pick the required courses in their degree program that they can make the best case for forgoing specific courses, and then submit their portfolio for review. They then need to develop a written statement for each course, explaining how their experience aligns with the outcomes of the courses they have selected, along with supporting documentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/degrees\/about\/undergraduate-prior-learning-credit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">VIEW THE PRIOR LEARNING CREDIT GUIDELINES<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome of the stuff I forgot I even knew I learned, so it was cool to dig that up,\u201d says Born. \u201cWriting things down that you want to remember is very helpful and it comes into play if you want to demonstrate that to someone like Berklee.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once Born completes his undergraduate degree with Berklee Online, he can continue on with his plan to get his master\u2019s and then doctorate degrees. In addition to teaching fundamentals to private lesson students, he\u2019d like the option to work at the collegiate level to dive deeper into musical topics, covering the spectrum of skills. He says learning music is a lifelong pursuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s good to have a beginner\u2019s mindset and always be a student,\u201d says Born. \u201cJust be open to learning from anyone\u2014learning from a school, learning on the gig, learning from beginners, learning from advanced players, asking questions and listening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Have questions about Prior Learning Credits at Berklee Online?
