{"id":18078,"date":"2022-04-21T14:50:07","date_gmt":"2022-04-21T19:50:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/?p=18078"},"modified":"2025-10-17T15:18:20","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T20:18:20","slug":"drummer-cindy-blackman-santana-on-carlos-lenny","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/drummer-cindy-blackman-santana-on-carlos-lenny\/","title":{"rendered":"Drummer Cindy Blackman Santana on Carlos, Lenny, and Visitations from Jazz Greats"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 style=\"text-transform: none;\">How Cindy Blackman Santana Connects Jazz Drumming with Lenny Kravitz, Carlos Santana, and Tony Williams<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none;\" title=\"Libsyn Player\" src=\"\/\/html5-player.libsyn.com\/embed\/episode\/id\/22870223\/height\/90\/theme\/custom\/thumbnail\/yes\/direction\/forward\/render-playlist\/no\/custom-color\/87A93A\/\" width=\"100%\" height=\"90\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cindy Blackman Santana never had a fallback plan for if she couldn\u2019t be a professional drummer, but she did at least look into other professions, such as law, \u201cbecause I wanted to help injustices,\u201d she says, and brain surgery, \u201cbecause it was very intricate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut when I checked into both of those fields,\u201d she says, \u201cI realized that it would take so much schooling that it would take away time from drumming and I\u2019d never be able to play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Young Cindy Blackman spent a lot of time in school for drums as well, attending the Hartt School of Music, and Berklee College of Music, the latter of which she left after three semesters for a very unique gig with the Drifters in the late 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>From there she moved to New York City and learned first-hand from some of the greatest jazz musicians in history; Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Max Roach, and more. She also says she\u2019s even had visitations from beyond with some of these musicians.<\/p>\n<p>She made a more rock <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018n\u2019 roll career move next, when she\u00a0<\/span>auditioned for Lenny Kravitz\u2019s band in the early 1990s, and what she thought was going to be a two-week exploration turned into 17 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLenny always teased me and said, \u2018you didn\u2019t know what you were stepping into, did you?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s Cindy Blackman behind the drums in the iconic \u201cAre You Gonna Go My Way\u201d video.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8LhCd1W2V0Q\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Then she began playing with Carlos Santana, and as she says, the chemistry was there onstage and off.
