The world looks completely different from when the Class of 2022 started their degree programs, but this year\u2019s graduates are entering into a new landscape brimming with possibilities and appreciation for the very thing that brought them together: music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-divinity-roxx\">Divinity Roxx <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the graduating class of 2022 is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/divinityroxx.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Divinity Roxx<\/a>, the renowned bass player and Grammy-nominated musician, recording artist, and composer. We had the pleasure of talking with Roxx on the <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/podcast-episode-six-divinity-roxx?pid=8023&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-promotion\" target=\"_blank\">Music is My Life<\/a><\/em> podcast back in 2017, where she discussed her time touring with Victor Wooten and in Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s all-female band. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The OG&#039;s EPK (Original All Female Beyonce Band)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Hi_mxVH-STA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Interview featuring Divinity Roxx and Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s original all-female band. <br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>All while touring, performing, and starting her own <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/diviroxxkids.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">production company<\/a> for children\u2019s media, Roxx completed her bachelor\u2019s degree in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Interdisciplinary Music Studies (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/music-degrees\/undergraduate\/interdisciplinary-music-studies-create-your-own-major?pid=8023&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-promotion\" target=\"_blank\">Interdisciplinary Music Studies<\/a> with a summa cum laude honor. She attended the Commencement ceremony in Boston, joined by her mom, sister, and brother. Then she immediately returned to the numerous projects she\u2019s working on like writing a one-woman show, composing music for the play adaptation of <em>The Boy Who Kissed The Sky<\/em>, releasing new music for kids and adults, and touring Europe this summer with legendary Detroit DJ Jeff Mills.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Divvinity.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18147\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Divinity Roxx, in Boston to accept her diploma. PHOTO CREDIT: MIKE SPENCER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGraduating from Berklee means being a part of a legacy of incredible creatives,\u201d says Roxx. \u201cI\u2019m honored to share that with so many people I look up to. I\u2019m proud to be a Berklee alum.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kelvin-frazier-phd\">Kelvin Frazier, PhD<br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Roxx wasn\u2019t the only one who went back to school for music. For <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kelvinfrazier.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kelvin Frazier<\/a>, his degree from Berklee is his fourth! He earned an undergraduate degree in both chemistry and math from Savannah State University, and went on to earn his PhD in physical chemistry from MIT.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a music career arguably as successful as his science career, Frazier released his first single, \u201cMarked and Scarred\u201d in 2017, which landed on the <em>Billboard<\/em> chart for Best Adult R&amp;B Songs. In 2021, his single \u201cI Be Best\u201d also charted in the same <em>Billboard<\/em> category, this time in the top 30. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kelvin Frazier - Missin&#039; You\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W6tzwbuVRv0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kelvin Frazier\u2019s 2018 single \u201cMissin\u2019 You\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t easy, but I was proud that I could balance it all and release new music as a recording artist,\u201d says Frazier. \u201cIt has always been a dream that I could balance both my science and music career.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When COVID hit and Frazier couldn\u2019t perform live, he decided to enroll at Berklee Online to learn how to better navigate the music business. He majored in Interdisciplinary Music Studies, focusing on music business, law, publishing, touring, marketing, and music supervision. He also did this while simultaneously working three jobs in the science field.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Kelvin-Frazier-phd.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18122\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBefore the pandemic hit, I was going to set up an international tour in the UK,\u201d says Frazier. \u201cI\u2019m glad I took the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/international-music-marketing-developing-your-music-career-abroad?pid=8023&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-promotion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"International Music Marketing (opens in a new tab)\">International Music Marketing<\/a><\/em> course because I found out that I had no idea what I was doing. I am now equipped with a real plan on how to execute an international tour.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frazier flew to Boston from Atlanta to attend Commencement, alongside his mom, dad, and brother. The last time they were all together in Boston was for his MIT graduation in 2015.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"594\" height=\"540\" data-id=\"18131\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/promo-pic-v1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18131\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Frazier graduating from MIT in 2015<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1440\" height=\"930\" data-id=\"18149\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Kelvin.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18149\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8230; and Berklee in 2022.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter graduation, I plan to continue to be an independent recording artist,\u201d he says. \u201cBecause of Berklee Online\u2019s program, I am more knowledgeable about navigating the industry.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bethany-becker\">Bethany Becker<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Commencement was a sort of homecoming for <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bethanybecker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bethany Becker<\/a> and her husband Blake Jurasin, who graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2015. He worked as an intern in the Berklee Online office, and recommended the program to his wife. Bethany and Blake met after he graduated from Berklee and moved to Austin, Texas, where he became the guitarist in her band, three years before they started dating.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"960\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Photo-Apr-30-4-21-42-PM.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18123\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">2022 graduate Bethany Becker and her husband Blake Jurasin. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had been working in the music business since I was 14 years old,\u201d says Becker. \u201cI\u2019ve been in Nashville and recorded and done the whole big-budget album thing. So when I decided to go to school, I didn\u2019t want to go for a piece of paper. I wanted to go for an education.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Becker\u2019s Interdisciplinary Music Studies program focused on songwriting, production, marketing, and publishing. Her goal was to fill in any knowledge gaps that would help her become a jack-of-all-trades musician.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to be as self-sufficient as I can be,\u201d says Becker. \u201cI know I need a team and when I have a team that\u2019s awesome. Like right now I have people helping me book. But I want to be able to do as much as I can when needed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Photo-Apr-30-4-21-23-PM.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18124\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Becker flew straight from the International Christian Film Festival in Orlando to attend Commencement. She had been nominated for Best Performing artist for her song, \u201cOpen Arms\u201d from the award-winning film <em>The Dark Places<\/em>, in which she played the lead role.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Bethany Becker\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/4v0fYY0SaE3TSNC11efZth?si=iBjJFtkPQFGUbvNAKCSErA&#038;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u201cI\u2019m just working hard, jumping at the right opportunities as they come my way,\u201d says Becker. \u201cGod\u2019s opening doors and we\u2019ll just see what\u2019s next. I\u2019m just going to keep using the knowledge I have from Berklee\u2014I\u2019m literally taking my assignments and using them as my real-life marketing plan.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lavelle-peterson\">Lavelle Peterson<br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Based in Saugus, Massachusetts with the US Coast Guard, Lavelle Peterson is graduating Berklee with a degree in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/music-degrees\/undergraduate\/music-production?pid=8023&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-promotion\" target=\"_blank\">Music Production<\/a>. There\u2019s no way to sugar-coat it\u2014being an active service member while being a student is difficult.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was the most challenging but most exciting thing I\u2019ve done, next to earning the title of Marine,\u201d says Peterson. \u201cI had military duties, extensive projects due at Berklee, COVID-influenced lifestyle changes, and a child adjusting to virtual learning all at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1125\" height=\"1693\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image_6487327.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18127\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Peterson at his advancement ceremony.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Even with all that was going on in his life, Peterson pushed himself in the program, spending ample time in a studio, thanks to a connection with Berklee Online instructor, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/faculty\/bora-uslusoy?pid=8023&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-promotion\" target=\"_blank\">Bora Uslusoy<\/a>.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBora introduced me to the people at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.therecordco.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Record Co.<\/a>, where you can rent a studio for low prices, as long as you provide the engineer,&#8221; says Peterson. &#8220;Hence, I was the engineer. So I have access to an auxiliary studio at any given time for a very low price.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Marlinspike\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nspX0LeNcCU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another instructor who had a major impact on Peterson was Andrea Stolpe, who looked out for her students\u2019 wellbeing throughout the pandemic, and especially during the Black Lives Matter movement of 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy instructor <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/faculty\/andrea-stolpe?pid=8023&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-promotion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Andrea Stolpe<\/a> gave us time to reflect on respect for humanity,\u201d says Peterson. \u201cIt was her ability to use her influence to address this subject when it\u2019s usually and unfortunately taboo in the workplace\u2014it just made me proud to belong. Especially, since this is music and poetry here, and it should be a place where we can express how we feel without limitations. I am very appreciative for that moment in time during 2020.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peterson\u2019s goal is to build his own studio back home in Detroit, where he can mix, produce, and cowrite for artists.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/military\/overview?pid=8023&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-promotion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Learn more about Berklee Online\u2019s military benefits.<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tiffany-sanford\">Tiffany Sanford<br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tiffany Sanford from Gresham, Oregon, grew up playing classical piano and composing her own music. She has accompanied choirs and art institutions across the Pacific Northwest, including the Portland Ballet and Oregon Ballet Theatre, and also teaches piano. During her time at Hood Community College, she wrote the book, lyrics, and music to three full-length musicals. From there she turned her focus to songwriting and enrolled at Berklee Online. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a songwriter, I\u2019m driven to write music that emotionally impacts my listener with the goal of bringing inspiration, renewed strength, courage, self-acceptance, hope, or healing to my audience,\u201d she says. \u201cI love to champion stories of the forgotten, hurting, or misunderstood, especially of women who overcome difficult situations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-soundcloud wp-block-embed-soundcloud wp-embed-aspect-1-1 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Price Tag by tkbcomposer\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F1127222221&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxheight=750&#038;maxwidth=500\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sanford has overcome difficult situations herself, including raising her now three-year-old son while earning her Berklee degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/music-degrees\/undergraduate\/songwriting?pid=8023&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-promotion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">songwriting<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had to be very organized with my schedule,\u201d she says. \u201cEvery nap time for my son was study time for me. But often, I had to study outside of his naps as well. When my son was young, I remember putting him in his bouncer right next to me so I could engage with him while also working on my classes.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"593\" height=\"679\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Tiffany-final.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18143\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sanford said she was looking forward to meeting up with her classmates at Commencement, especially her friends from her songwriting courses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m proud of the growth I experienced through my studies,\u201d says Sanford. \u201cEvery class stretched and taught me that the boundaries in which I placed myself can and always will expand when I push myself outside of my comfort zone and try new things.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/music-degrees\/undergraduate\/overview?pid=8023&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-promotion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">EARN A BACHELOR\u2019S DEGREE WITH BERKLEE ONLINE<\/a><\/em><\/strong><br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time in two years, Berklee Online\u2019s graduating students traveled to Boston from all over the world to receive their diplomas in person at the 2022 Commencement ceremony.
