After enrolling in Berklee Online\u2019s <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/songwriting-writing-hit-songs?pid=8023&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-promotion\" target=\"_blank\">Writing Hit Songs<\/a> <\/em>course, Marisa achieved exactly what she set out to do: wrote a song that went viral on YouTube and TikTok, garnering nearly 1 million combined views to-date. This opened up opportunities for her to move to LA to study acting, tour with Greyson Chance, and land a principal role in Disney\u2019s <em>The Hip Hop Nutcracker<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hip Hop Nutcracker | Official Trailer | Disney+\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SRDGQZHsiGg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The trailer for Disney\u2019s <em>The Hip Hop Nutcracker<\/em>, streaming on Disney+ November 25. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so cool to see the same moments in the story revisited with a hip-hop lens,\u201d says Marisa. \u201cTo see how you can dance all of those same roles in a different style, and how it tells the same exact story but conveys it in a completely different way. I think it\u2019ll be especially cool for people who are familiar with <em>The Nutcracker<\/em> to see how it\u2019s transformed into a modern hip-hop version.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marisa plays a drummer in <em>The Hip-Hop Nutcracker<\/em>, which is narrated by Run-D.M.C.\u2019s Rev. Run. The role was a perfect fit for her because she\u2019s been playing drums since age eight. She says that Disney was specifically looking for a female drummer for this role, which Marisa appreciated.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really glad that they look for that representation,\u201d says Marisa. \u201cEven at venues when I\u2019m setting up, they\u2019re like, \u2018Who\u2019s the drummer?\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018It\u2019s me.\u2019 The reaction now I realize is like, \u2018Oh, you\u2019re going to drum?\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018Yeah, I didn\u2019t think that was unusual.\u2019 But I love defying stereotypes and I would never think to let stereotypes or expectations stop me.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout her youth and teen years, Marisa played drums in a band that she formed with her brother Michael in a project they called <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelandmarisa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michael &amp; Marisa<\/a>. Together they have performed more than 350 shows around North America, notably opening for Ariana Grande on <em>The Honeymoon Tour<\/em> tour in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"959\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Michael-and-Marisa.jpg\" alt=\"Michael and Marisa Marisa Kouroubacalis\" class=\"wp-image-18727\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Throughout her youth and teen years, Marisa played drums in a band that she formed with her brother Michael in a project they called Michael &amp; Marisa. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a passion for both of us and it was always how we bonded,\u201d says Marisa about performing with her brother. \u201cOur parents aren\u2019t musical, but we just always love to do that together.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A year apart in age, Marisa and Michael went their own ways when they reached college. Marisa attended Brown University to study sociology, and Michael went to Berklee College of Music to study electronic production and design. He\u2019s currently a hyper-pop artist and producer who goes by <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/0eulFYzjHkalG4jALSAQAo?si=08IeR09PSVeWn3Te-Mp5Hw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">MkX<\/a> professionally. He also produces Marisa\u2019s music, which leans more old-school R&amp;B. She says that studying sociology provided some welcome distance after spending so much time performing as a child and teen, and helped inform her songwriting.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think most songs are about people, or a relationship, or something along those lines,\u201d says Marisa. \u201cSo it really strengthened me as a songwriter, just understanding people in new ways and why they behave the way they do. I really enjoyed it for that reason and I definitely use it when writing lyrics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marisa frequently visited Michael at Berklee, and enrolled in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.berklee.edu\/summer\" target=\"_blank\">Berklee\u2019s Summer Program<\/a> between her freshman and sophomore year at Brown. She graduated in 2019 and Michael graduated from Berklee in 2020. At that point, Marisa and Michael were living at their parents\u2019 home in Massachusetts, sheltering in place because of Covid. Marisa found herself with extra time and wanting to get back into songwriting. This was when she enrolled in the 12-week songwriting course at Berklee Online and wrote her viral song \u201cShow Me You.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dynamyte - Show Me You\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SVcnud4FBrU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Marisa\u2019s viral song \u201cShow Me You\u201d that she wrote in Berklee Online\u2019s <em>Writing Hit Songs <\/em>course. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI just remember being on my bedroom floor and writing that song and doing the coursework,\u201d says Marisa. \u201cIt\u2019s super interactive with other students and you get feedback from them. But I really had never written any songs by myself, so I didn\u2019t know if anything I was doing was good. But as soon as I wrote that one, something about it just really stuck with me and I really resonated with it. And I feel like that course really transformed me as a songwriter.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After releasing a few more songs that took off online\u2014\u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/TV6FfoJ4Mj0\" target=\"_blank\">Something\u2019s Off<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7HwmKbx5PsM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Flattery<\/a>\u201d\u2014Marisa moved from Massachusetts to LA, where she enrolled in acting classes to expand her social circle. She used to act as a child, and it turns out she still had a knack for it as an adult.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I came out to LA, I really wanted to make friends and meet people,\u201d says Marisa. \u201cAs a kid I had done acting, so I thought it would be fun to take an acting class and was super nervous, because I figured anyone in an LA acting class was going to be really good.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It turns out that she was also really good, and after taking a few courses, the acting school connected Marisa with a booking agent, who submitted her for <em>The Hip Hop Nutcracker<\/em> role.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe just asked for some drumming videos and then she called me up and was like, \u2018Oh my God, you booked a Disney movie!\u2019\u201d says Marisa. \u201cThen I was at Paramount Studios filming with all these incredibly talented people. So yeah, I was just so grateful and couldn\u2019t believe that I got something like this.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of her favorite scenes to film was the battle of the mice and soldiers, where she led the toy soldiers in combat.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s funny because none of them [the soldiers] were drummers, but they had to pretend to play soldier drums and then I had to be the one in front of them drumming on a full bucket drum kit. So I was leading them in this battle, which was just really cool because they were all so talented and I was lucky to even be in the room.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marisa will be finishing out the year touring the US with Greyson Chance, a former child star who went viral with his cover of Lady Gaga\u2019s \u201cPaparazzi\u201d in 2010, and rose to fame with the help of Ellen DeGeneres. The relationship with Ellen eventually soured, and Greyson recently revealed what went down, and how he\u2019s still working to build his career back up in an extensive <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/greyson-chance-ellen-degeneres-1234597415\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Rolling Stone<\/a><\/em> interview. Marisa has toured with Greyson a few times as Michael &amp; Marisa, but this is her first time touring with him as a solo artist. Otherwise Marisa is looking forward to a new year of possibilities in both music and acting.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith the tour and this movie, hopefully it\u2019s a stepping stone in my career,\u201d says Marisa. \u201cI\u2019ve been doing this independently my whole life, but would love to just see where it takes me now.
