The kind of feedback she gets is too general, and she sometimes suspects it\u2019s candy coated.&nbsp; Phrases like \u201cI really like it!\u201d and questions such as \u201cWhen did you write that?\u201d or \u201cDid you write that about yourself?\u201d don\u2019t help her to assess whether these songs are hitting their mark in a commercial and still substantial place. Despite the exuberance of some feedback, she finds that when she presents them to industry gatekeepers, their response is lukewarm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/faculty\/andrea-stolpe?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">TAKE A SONGWRITING COURSE WITH ANDREA STOLPE<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how do we know if we\u2019re progressing to writing better songs? How do we know if we\u2019re both moving our audience to care about our music as well as finding commercial viability? The frustrating reality is, we don\u2019t know until we get useful feedback from playing our songs out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The truth is, people don\u2019t know how to verbalize their responses to our songs. We\u2019ve got to ask for what we need, sometimes with agonizing specificity. Try the tips below and see if you can get your listener talking with useful information:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Play the song through once, then take the listener through the song a second time one section at a time, stopping after a verse or a verse and chorus for feedback.\u00a0 They\u2019ll start talking, where before they didn\u2019t have much to say.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019re presenting the song as a recording, make sure audio quality is high.
