Photo by Dara Munnis. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-learn-how-drummer-jordan-rose-built-a-global-touring-career-through-skill-resilience-and-connection\">Learn How Drummer Jordan Rose Built a Global Touring Career Through Skill, Resilience, and Connection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jordan Rose, a Berklee alum and an accomplished drummer, is currently traveling the world on Maggie Rogers\u2019 highly-anticipated <em>Don\u2019t Forget Me<\/em> tour. The tour\u2019s name is fitting for Jordan, who remembers everyone. One of his biggest strengths is staying in touch with the people he\u2019s met along the way in his music career, including the Academic Advising team at Berklee Online. After graduating from Berklee College of Music in 2012 with his degree in Drum Set Performance, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jordanrosedrums.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jordan<\/a> was an Advisor for a brief six-month period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u201cThe Kill\u201d - Maggie Rogers (LIVE on The Late Show)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/64J-9g3RftQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jordan Rose in the opening shot of Maggie Rogers\u2019 performance of \u201cThe Kill\u201d on <em>The Late Show with Stephen Colbert<\/em>. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI enjoyed getting to talk on the phone with people from all over who were trying to further their music education, and learning what their goals were,\u201d says Jordan. \u201cI was young and didn\u2019t have that much experience outside of school, so it was interesting to talk to people who already had full-on careers. It opened my eyes and helped me see that there\u2019s so many different journeys that people are on, and it inspired me to figure out what my journey might look like.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That journey started when he was invited to join legendary blues musician Joe Louis Walker on his international tour in 2013, leaving his advising role behind, but not his friendships with the team. This set into motion a whole career collaborating with artists such as Jacob Collier, Theo Katzman, Laufey, Charlie Puth, Ruel, SZA, Rufus Wainwright, Cory Wong, and many more.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-discovering-the-drums\"><strong>Discovering the Drums<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Jordan is the youngest of three. He first picked up the drums at age 11, encouraged by his middle brother, Mike. By sixth grade, Jordan had joined his school jazz band and started working with a private instructor. Recognizing his talent, his oldest brother, Greg, a singer and songwriter, invited Jordan to join his band, Skyward. They played \u201990s alternative rock and punk, covering bands like Creed, MxPx, Slick Shoes, and Jimmy Eat World.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs soon as my eye got on the drums, there was a spark and I never looked back,\u201d says Jordan. \u201cI became obsessed and here I am. I\u2019m 37, so 20-something years later, I still feel the same excitement I had when I was 11. I just love it.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-finding-his-calling\"><strong>Finding His Calling<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before attending Berklee in Boston at the age of 23, Jordan experienced a life event that tested and cemented his perseverance in pursuing music. At the age of 20, he lost all hearing in his right ear overnight due to a benign tumor. In the span of two years, he had four surgeries on his ear and he says there were times when he didn\u2019t know if he\u2019d ever get his hearing back.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was an emotional roller coaster, thinking maybe I should change careers,\u201d he says. \u201cBut ultimately, going through that hardship really did the opposite in a positive way, where it really reinforced that music is what I was supposed to do. I felt it was my calling.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/jordan_rose_article_image_2024_2.jpg\" alt=\"Jordan Rose at his drum set\" class=\"wp-image-20912\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo by Alex S.K. Brown<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most challenging twists on that emotional roller coaster occurred after undergoing his third surgery, which was supposed to be his last. A month after what he thought was a successful procedure Jordan lost his hearing again. That night he had a gig playing Dixieland jazz, music that traditionally evokes carefree happiness. Jordan says he felt the exact opposite.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHere I am, super depressed. I couldn\u2019t even smile at anyone. I was just feeling so down and \u2018woe is me,\u2019 but I struggled through the gig and did my best, but just felt very dark inside,\u201d he says. \u201cAfter the gig, I was packing up and this elderly couple came up to me and the man was saying, \u2018Hey, thanks for the music. We loved it.\u2019 And then the woman started talking, but her voice didn\u2019t sound. So I was listening a little closer, and then she proceeded to tell me that she was completely deaf, and she was like, \u2018I couldn\u2019t hear your music, but I could feel it in my heart.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jordan says he thanked the couple and went out to his car and started to cry.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat are the chances on the day that I lose my hearing again?\u201d says Jordan. \u201cSo whenever times get tough, and if I think, \u2018What am I doing with my life and my career?\u2019 I think of those people, and it just gives me motivation to get back up and keep going. Even though I don\u2019t have all of my hearing, I learned that music is more than just our ears. It goes to our heart and our soul.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laufey\"><strong>Laufey<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With some of his hearing restored and a renewed determination to pursue a career in music, Jordan moved to Boston in 2010 to attend Berklee at the age of 23. He quickly made friends, many of whom he remains in touch with to this day, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/stevebaltin\/2023\/11\/12\/best-of-2023-spencer-stewart-on-laufey-creativity-and-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Spencer Stewart<\/a>, whose career as a music producer has recently taken off.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI remember the day I met Spencer on campus,\u201d says Jordan. \u201cHe was carrying an upright bass, and he was walking into the cafeteria and I just said, \u2018Hey, man,\u2019 and we just started a conversation. We had lunch together that day, and he was so interesting and so passionate about music, and we hit it off and became friends.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Berklee, Jordan and Spencer played in several bands together in New York and toured with musician <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.calebhawley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Caleb Hawley<\/a>. When Spencer shifted from performing to producing music, he began working with another Berklee alum, Laufey. While recording her album <em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/1rpCHilZQkw84A3Y9czvMO?si=9mHtQwLBRj-coPZqQAGj-A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Bewitched<\/a><\/em>, Spencer asked Jordan to play on the album\u2019s opening track, \u201cDreamer.\u201d <em>Bewitched<\/em> went on to win a Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Laufey - Dreamer (Official Audio)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-xoxu1zHiSY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jordan Rose plays drums on Laufey\u2019s song \u201cDreamer\u201d on her Grammy-winning album <em>Bewitched<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLaufey has just been crushing it,\u201d says Jordan. \u201cShe won a Grammy, and it\u2019s awesome. Really excited to be a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-jacob-collier\"><strong>Jacob Collier<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, singer Jacob Collier DMed Jordan to play drums on a recording session at <a href=\"https:\/\/powerstation.nyc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">BerkleeNYC\u2019s Power Station<\/a> studio. After a full day of recording, it was past midnight, but Jacob had one more song he wanted to try. That song turned out to be the single, \u201cLittle Blue,\u201d which features Brandi Carlile.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jacob Collier - Little Blue (feat. Brandi Carlile) [Official Video]\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z2zLSkhANSY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jordan Rose on drums in Jacob Collier\u2019s song \u201cLittle Blue,\u201d featuring Brandi Carlile.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJacob was like, \u2018Hey, Just come into the control room, listen to it, and then go out there and we\u2019ll see what happens.\u2019 And it was \u2018Little Blue.\u2019 So I went in and listened, tried to just get the form of the song and then went out to the drums and we just did a couple of takes.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, \u201cLittle Blue\u201d was the only track they recorded that day that ended up on his 2024 album <em>Djesse Vol. 4.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1481\" height=\"790\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image2-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20913\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jordan Rose with Jacob Collier at BerkleeNYC\u2019s Power Station studio. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe was laser-focused the entire time,\u201d says Jordan. \u201cWe would do a take of a song, and then he\u2019d come out and he would have a list of notes, and he\u2019d just be like, \u2018Okay, try this on the prechorus. And he would beatbox ideas, and he was moving so quick. It was amazing to see how his brain works and how the details play into the full symphony of his music. On top of that, he\u2019s also just incredibly friendly. He made me feel like an old friend immediately, which it\u2019s always nice when people are incredibly talented, but also incredibly great people.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-maggie-rogers\"><strong>Maggie Rogers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this recording session, Jordan got connected with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brynbliska.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Bryn Bliska<\/a>, who is Maggie Rogers\u2019 keyboard player and co-music director. She was in Collier\u2019s touring band at the time. Jordan remembers getting the text from her about auditioning for Maggie\u2019s <em>Don\u2019t Forget Me<\/em> tour, and almost turned it down if it weren\u2019t for his wife, Jules.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I got that text, I did kind of have a busy year booked out that I was feeling really excited about,\u201d says Jordan. \u201cSo I almost immediately said, \u2018Thank you so much, but I don\u2019t think this makes sense.\u2019 My wife, she was next to me in bed, half-asleep, and I just told her, \u2018Hey, I was just asked if I was interested in the Maggie Rogers tour. I\u2019m kind of thinking I\u2019ll say no.\u2019 She was like, \u2018Wait, just learn more about it before you say no.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says he\u2019s glad Jules encouraged him to reconsider because he got the gig, and his conflicts ended up moving anyway.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2824\" height=\"2623\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/maggie-rogers.jpg\" alt=\"Jordan Rose playing drums behind Maggie Rogers while she's performing onstage at TD Garden in Boston. \" class=\"wp-image-21520\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jordan performing with Maggie Rogers at a 2024 show in Boston.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt the beginning of this year, I did not see myself being on tour with Maggie Rogers, but it all worked out and I\u2019m just loving it. Everyone is super kind. Everyone is super professional and good at what they do. Maggie\u2019s amazing. She has so much on her plate, but she handles it with grace and with a smile on her face. And she\u2019s so talented. It\u2019s really inspiring to be around her and just around everybody in this group.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-advice-for-musicians\">Advice for Musicians<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jordan\u2019s advice for getting more gigs is simple: put the music first.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI always try to remember that it\u2019s not what I\u2019m playing, but it\u2019s how I\u2019m playing it,\u201d says Jordan. \u201cEven if it\u2019s technically simple, I try to put my heart and soul into it and play it.
