Starting in September, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/faculty\/lori-landay?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\">Lori Landay<\/a>\u2019s new four-week <em><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/digital-storytelling?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Digital Storytelling<\/a><\/em> course will guide students through the narrative process, from forming an initial concept and storyboarding, to filming and postproduction.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo me, there\u2019s nothing more foundational than digital storytelling because what we\u2019re going to focus on is the idea of finding your own voice,\u201d says Landay.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A professor at Berklee College of Music for more than 20 years, Landay has found her own voice as a scholar of twentieth- and twenty-first-century culture. The course author of two 12-week Berklee Online courses, <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/game-design-principles?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\">Game Design Principles<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/the-language-of-film-and-tv?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">The Language of Film and TV<\/a><\/em>, she notices that many of her students are multi-talented when it comes to both music and art.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have students tell me all the time, \u2018I was trying to decide between art school and music school,\u2019\u201d says Landay. \u201cSo when they end up in a class like <em>Game Design Principles<\/em>, and they\u2019re really thinking through a medium that is as much about the visual as it is about anything else\u2014mechanics or gameplay or writing or storytelling\u2014it\u2019s something where they\u2019re able to really pull on some of those skills and those interests, even if they are people who are now pursuing music or audio careers.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Digital Storytelling<\/em> is designed to appeal to students who are multi-faceted when it comes to audio and visuals, as well as students who are music-focused and want to improve at telling visual stories. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Landay, who has a PhD in English and American studies, brings a wealth of storytelling experience to the table, having worked on music videos, VR games, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"augmented reality (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/oV3Z2DH6qjI?si=JqLiQQGeB_pbe8Rk\" target=\"_blank\">augmented reality<\/a> experiences, and written two books, <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/I-Love-Lucy-TV-Milestones\/dp\/0814332617\" target=\"_blank\">I Love Lucy<\/a><\/em> and <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Madcaps-Screwballs-Women-Trickster-1998-04-03\/dp\/B01FELDOGQ\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=261UAUJI6Z1J6&amp;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.x19IZGpgaq9seZRSTNcNAw.ucr-gJM66HxJtTtRwbhNH0Lb7IYtAmlmSdBTmGrijdI&amp;dib_tag=se&amp;keywords=Madcaps%2C+Screwballs%2C+and+Con+Women%3A+The+Female+Trickster+in+American+Culture&amp;qid=1724672371&amp;s=books&amp;sprefix=madcaps%2C+screwballs%2C+and+con+women+the+female+trickster+in+american+culture%2Cstripbooks%2C82&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">Madcaps, Screwballs, and Con Women: The Female Trickster in American Culture<\/a><\/em>.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always been somebody who believes in combining theory and practice, and I try to do that as much as possible in all my courses,\u201d she says.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>Digital Storytelling<\/em>, students will have the opportunity to customize the experience to meet their creative needs through hands-on work. For musicians, this might mean creating a promotional video for a band. For educators, it could be developing engaging content for their students. And for others, it might be a chance to tell a personal story. The main requirement is that students submit a one- to three-minute video with audio, visuals, and editing as a final project.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really about their journey to develop their digital story and then having the resources to do it,\u201d says Landay. \u201cAnd because it\u2019s four weeks, they will be doing a lot of time management, and it might be more of a prototype, which if they want to, after the course is over, then they can continue to iterate.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the course, students will engage in a process that mirrors professional video production, but on a more accessible scale and with lower stakes.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis DIY stuff is becoming more and more a part of so many jobs and so many careers, and there\u2019s a way in which technology makes things easier, but there\u2019s also a way in which technology puts more responsibilities on the individual,\u201d says Landay. \u201cFor this course, you are the creative director, the writer, the videographer, the storyboard artist, the scriptwriter, and the editor. So it\u2019s kind of like a super indie media-making experience.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By learning all the skills involved with video production, students will have a taste of all the roles and tasks involved in the process so that they can continue to DIY their own projects, or hone in on a specific part of the process that interests them.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople\u2019s career paths take interesting turns,\u201d says Landay. \u201cThat often happens because you find something that you realize that you like and that you\u2019re good at, and then all of a sudden there\u2019s an opportunity and you move into it. I\u2019ve heard so many people talk about that, how their career evolves, and once you realize that you like something, you can kind of be on the lookout.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Digital Storytelling<\/em> is enrolling now for the semester starting on September 23, 2024.
