This year, we\u2019re celebrating by shining the spotlight on Berklee Online\u2019s four bass instructors\u2014each as essential as the four strings on a standard bass guitar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But before we get ahead of ourselves, do bassists really need a hug? The responses from our instructors are as diverse as their musical backgrounds. <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/dave-clark?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dave Clark<\/a> (whose birthday coincidentally falls on the October 12 day of celebration for Hug-a-Bassist Day) says, \u201cAbsolutely hugs! I do hope folks appreciate our contribution.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/richard-appleman?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rich Appleman<\/a> echoes the sentiment, saying \u201cI haven&#8217;t heard of Hug-a-Bassist Day but I am interested.\u201d He goes on to say, \u201cOf course bass players deserve a hug \u2026 Many don\u2019t appreciate us.\u201d He shares a humorous anecdote about when bass legend Ron Carter spoke at Berklee Commencement in 2005. Carter began by saying, \u201cI am surprised you invited me to speak because no one notices the bass player \u2026 until they stop playing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/danny-morris?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Danny Morris<\/a> says he believes hugs are universal: \u201cEverybody needs a hug,\u201d he says, regardless if they play bass or not. \u201cSometimes it\u2019s a thankless job, but bassists are selfless people who love being part of a community.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/anthony-vitti?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anthony Vitti<\/a> has a different perspective: \u201cNope,\u201d he says. \u201cThe people that matter know what we do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"background-color:#cccccc; text-align:left; vertical-align: middle; padding:20px 47px;\">\n<h2 class=\"long-title\"><strong>Big Bass Moments<\/strong><br><\/h2>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/faculty\/richard-appleman?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&#038;pid=&#038;utm_source=takenote&#038;tum_medium=blog&#038;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\">RICH APPLEMAN<\/a>: Charlie Haden on \u201cSong for Che\u201d from <em>Liberation Music Orchestra<\/em> by Charlie Haden <BR><BR>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W2j-AQOZAUo?si=ArPFE_9m3OlC8nmM\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<BR><BR>\n\u201cOnly Charlie Haden could use the acoustic bass for a solo that embodies social protest. He dedicated the mostly instrumental song to revolutionaries in the Portuguese colonies of Mozambique, Angola, and Guinea during a live performance in 1971 and was detained at Lisbon Airport and jailed, and interrogated by the Portuguese secret police. Upon his release\nthe FBI questioned him. Now that is dedication!\u201d<\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vitti stands out amongst his Berklee Online bass colleagues in that he is the only native bass player among them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe first bass line I learned was the Beatles\u2019 \u2018Day Tripper,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cA friend taught it to me in eighth grade in 1978.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Berklee Online Vitti is the author and instructor of the <em><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/rock-bass?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rock Bass<\/a><\/em> course, and instructor of the <em><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/slap-bass?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Slap Bass<\/a><\/em> course, which he wrote with the late <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/lenny-stallworth?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lenny Stallworth<\/a>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/bass?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"STUDY BASS WITH BERKLEE ONLINE (opens in a new tab)\">STUDY BASS WITH BERKLEE ONLINE<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the other bass instructors at Berklee Online, the journey to the bass began with a different instrument. Trumpet was the original instrument for both Appleman and Morris (who co-authored the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/bass-performance-101?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Bass Performance 101<\/a><\/em> course together for Berklee Online). Appleman recalls picking up the trumpet in grade school, only to have his middle school band teacher steer him toward the sousaphone.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat put me in the bass clef, which felt great,\u201d says Appleman, who is chair emeritus of the Bass department at Berklee College of Music.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/hug_a_bassist_day_article_image_2024_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21511\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morris played trumpet for a longer time before he felt the bass beckon. Someone in his dorm at Ithaca College had a bass, and he says he was just drawn to it.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI started playing along to James Taylor and Led Zeppelin records, and the instrument just spoke to me,\u201d he says, while strolling back to his office on the Boston campus of Berklee College of Music. \u201cI felt it was meant to be, and I stopped playing trumpet. There\u2019s something about the instrument that is just so much fun, but I think it\u2019s the role of it, like I just walked from Beacon Street to where I am now, and I\u2019m admiring all of the beautiful gardens and buildings, and I don\u2019t look up. I\u2019m looking at the ground, so I guess I\u2019m just attracted to the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to <em>Bass Performance 101<\/em>, Morris is also the author and instructor for the Berklee Online course <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/r-b-bass?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\">R&amp;B Bass<\/a><\/em>, and an instructor for <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/music-for-beginners?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\">Music for Beginners<\/a><\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"background-color:#cccccc; text-align:left; vertical-align: middle; padding:20px 47px;\">\n<h2 class=\"long-title\"><strong>Big Bass Moments<\/strong><br><\/h2>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/faculty\/danny-morris?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&#038;pid=&#038;utm_source=takenote&#038;tum_medium=blog&#038;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\">DANNY MORRIS<\/a>: Willie Weeks on \u201cVoices Inside (Everything Is Everything)\u201d from <em>Donny Hathaway Live<\/em> by Donny Hathaway. Best bass solo ever! I just like James Taylor records. I thought they were very musical and beautiful, and his bass playing, I figured out, as much as he\u2019s in the role of supporting everything\u2014because he has this perfect pitch and beautiful harmony\u2014there were some melodic lines to his bass. I had him visit my <a href=\"https:\/\/college.berklee.edu\/courses\/pfss-311\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Survey of Bass<\/a><\/em> class here, and he spoke to that. He said, \u201cWell, James Taylor\u2019s a wonderful guitar player, and his thumb is actually playing bass.\u201d So he had to find a place in the musical spectrum to fit. And that helps create his melodic style.\n<\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dave Clark says his first instrument wasn\u2019t bass either, but his transition was even later in life than Morris or Appleman.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was playing drums professionally and teaching drums, but as a composer\/songwriter I wanted to lead a lifestyle involving more pitches,\u201d he says. \u201cSo I was practicing piano to that end when a friend\u2019s band needed a bass player\u2014and had known that I\u2019d been fooling around on one\u2014and asked if I could fill in until they got a \u2018real one,\u2019 and I just made sure that they had no need to get a \u2018real\u2019 one by arriving at the rehearsals super prepared.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"background-color:#cccccc; text-align:left; vertical-align: middle; padding:20px 47px;\">\n<h2 class=\"long-title\"><strong>Big Bass Moments<\/strong><br><\/h2>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/faculty\/dave-clark?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&#038;pid=&#038;utm_source=takenote&#038;tum_medium=blog&#038;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\">DAVE CLARK<\/a><BR><BR>\n<STRONG>Favorite Bass Fill<\/STRONG>: I really love the fills towards the end of \u201cYearning For Your Love\u201d by the Gap Band.\n<BR><STRONG>Favorite Melodic Bass Line<\/STRONG>: I love the riff on Parliament\u2019s \u201cDo That Stuff.\u201d Also Oscar Pettiford\u2019s melody on \u201cTricrotism\u201d is wonderful. <BR>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iK5fgbbWj9k?si=Xsv0ttOy-JP7OMXg\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clark teaches <em><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/jazz-bass?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jazz Bass<\/a><\/em>, written by the late <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/jim-stinnett?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jim Stinnett<\/a> (who hilariously posed for his author profile photo holding a bass of a different \u201cstripe\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clark\u2019s commitment to mastering the bass extends to the instruments he plays, where each piece of equipment carries its own story. As Clark puts it: \u201cI play my Juzek upright bass the most. It formerly belonged to Sam Jones, and it appears on the cover of his <em>Something in Common <\/em>album. Something in Common indeed!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"985\" height=\"943\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/sam-jones-something-in-common-cover-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21100\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like Clark, the other bass instructors at Berklee Online have their own trusted gear that they rely on to craft their sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appleman says his current bass of choice is a Kay upright and a Sadowsky five-string electric. For amps he uses a Walter Woods head with any good speaker cabinet, as well as a Gallien Krueger MB Bass Combo amp. Of the latter, he says, \u201cIt\u2019s small, sounds good, and has XLR outputs, which are great for the sound folks.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vitti says he owns about 15 basses, most of which are Fender Jazz basses, but his favorite is more than 50 years old.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI play a custom 1969 seafoam green Jazz bass,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was custom ordered from Fender in 1969 with a mahogany body and brass nut.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"background-color:#cccccc; text-align:left; vertical-align: middle; padding:20px 47px;\">\n<h2 class=\"long-title\"><strong>Big Bass Moments<\/strong><br><\/h2>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/faculty\/anthony-vitti?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&#038;pid=&#038;utm_source=takenote&#038;tum_medium=blog&#038;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\">ANTHONY VITTI<\/a><BR><BR>\n<STRONG>Favorite Bass Fill<\/STRONG>: \u201cRun For Cover\u201d (Live) by David Sanborn, featuring Marcus Miller<BR>\n<STRONG>Favorite Melodic Bass Line<\/STRONG>: \u201cTears of a Clown\u201d by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles<BR><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/51B55OQysj8?si=fH1NoiYCJBmGlY1e\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for Morris, his most prized possession is his 1965 Fender Precision bass.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t take it out of the house anymore,\u201d he says. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be able to just leave it in a corner.\u201d Instead, he relies on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/modernvintageguitars\/reel\/C3QL5BGO_pi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Modern Vintage basses (opens in a new tab)\">Modern Vintage basses<\/a>, crafted by Rob Elrick, a former student of Morris\u2019s from the late 1980s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their bond was so strong that typing \u201cdannymo\u201d on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/modernvintageguitars.com\" target=\"_blank\">modernvintageguitars.com<\/a> will trigger a sizable discount at checkout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflecting on his long career, Morris believes his relationship with students keeps him young. When asked what advice he\u2019d give to prospective Berklee Online learners, he enthusiastically responds, \u201cCome on in! Let\u2019s discover together how to study music. It\u2019s a language. With more than 40 years of experience teaching, I still feel as though I\u2019m a student first and foremost.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vitti also shares his thoughts on online learning: \u201cThe online courses are awesome. I am able to pack much more material into the online course than I can in a regular Berklee lab that meets once a week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appleman adds his advice for Berklee Online bass students: \u201cMake sure you have the required equipment and available time to spend on course material and practice. Ask lots of questions and make lots of friends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clark echoes this sentiment: \u201cPractice as much and as thoughtfully as you can and do a lot of listening in the style of the course you are taking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Hug-a-Bassist Day rolls around, it\u2019s clear that Berklee Online\u2019s bass instructors bring more than just rhythm to the table\u2014they bring a lifetime of stories, knowledge, and a deep love for music. Whether they started on trumpet, drums, or piano, they all found their way to the bass and made it their own. Their dedication not only shapes their sound but also resonates with their students.
