But Ben Camp, a Berklee Online instructor and songwriter, has an approach that\u2019s a little different: \u201cDo you think AI is the coolest thing ever, and it\u2019s going to make your job a lot easier? Come take my class,\u201d Camp says. \u201cOr are you scared AI is going to take your job, and you want to burn it to the ground? Come take my class.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camp is the author and instructor of Berklee Online\u2019s new course, <em><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/ai-for-songwriters?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI for Songwriters<\/a><\/em>. With this four-week offering, Camp is inviting songwriters to roll up their sleeves and explore the creative potential of artificial intelligence with a curious mind and zero judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a place to form more informed opinions about it rather than me, prescribing what your opinion should be about it,\u201d says Camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camp likens the curriculum of the courses to a creative playground\u2014\u201cThere is a new technology around, and I want you to mess around with it and see what you can do with it creatively, what it inspires you to do creatively, and how you can break it.\u201d\u2014and is all about exploration. They admit to spending days on AI-generated songs, sometimes creating hundreds of versions just to see what\u2019s possible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve written songs without AI that have taken less effort than songs that I\u2019ve written with AI,\u201d they say. \u201cWith AI, I\u2019m going to do so many more explorations. I can\u2019t ask the producer for 237 versions of the song and piece together my favorite ones. But I can do that with AI!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"background-color:#EFF1F3; text-align:left; vertical-align: middle; padding:20px 47px;\"><h2><strong><em>Playing in the AI Sandbox: The \u2018C.R.E.A.T.E.\u2019 Formula<\/a><\/em><\/strong> <\/h2><p>\nCamp knows that jumping into AI can be overwhelming, especially when you\u2019re facing a blank screen and wondering where to even start. That\u2019s why they are teaching the \u201cC.R.E.A.T.E.\u201d formula, a tool to help structure AI prompts for better results. Here\u2019s how it breaks down:\n<ul>\n  <li><strong>C: Character<\/strong> &#8211; What character or role do you wish the AI to play?\n    <ul>\n      <li>Specific Artist: \u201cYou are a seasoned songwriter in the style of Leonard Cohen\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n      <li>Genre Blend: \u201cYou are a lyricist inspired by a mix of \u201990s hip-hop and classic soul\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n      <li>Production Powerhouse: \u201cYou are a music producer channeling the creative energy of Pharrell Williams\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n    <\/ul>\n  <\/li>\n  <li><strong>R: Request<\/strong> &#8211; What are you asking the AI to do?\n    <ul>\n      <li>Brainstorming: \u201cGive me 10 different lyrical hooks with a nostalgic theme\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n      <li>Critique and Suggestion: \u201cAnalyze these lyrics. Can you spot where the rhymes feel forced and suggest alternatives?\u201d<\/li>\n      <li>Musical Direction: \u201cMy song is about overcoming adversity. What rhythmic style and instrumentation would suit it?\u201d<\/li>\n    <\/ul>\n  <\/li>\n  <li><strong>E: Examples<\/strong> &#8211; How many examples will you provide?\n    <ul>\n      <li>Zero-Shot (No examples): \u201cWrite a verse about a childhood memory\u201d<\/li>\n      <li>One-Shot (One example): \u201cWrite a catchy pop chorus about self-love. Here\u2019s a verse for inspiration: \u2018Mirror, mirror can\u2019t you see\u2026\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n      <li>Multi-Shot (Multiple examples): \u201cWrite a rap using colorful comparisons like \u2018flow like a tsunami\u2019 and \u2018crowned like royalty\u2019 and \u2018drums are my heartbeat.\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n    <\/ul>\n  <\/li>\n  <li><strong>A: Adjustments<\/strong> &#8211; Did the response suit your needs? If not, what would you like changed?\n    <ul>\n      <li>Stylistic Shifts: \u201cMake this chorus sound more anthemic and rock-influenced.\u201d<\/li>\n      <li>Mood Change: \u201cRewrite these lyrics so they are less bitter and more hopeful.\u201d<\/li>\n      <li>Specific Tweaks: \u201cInclude the metaphor of \u2018a flickering candle\u2019 somewhere in this bridge.\u201d or \u201cDo not include any rhymes.\u201d<\/li>\n    <\/ul>\n  <\/li>\n  <li><strong>T: Type of Output<\/strong> &#8211; How would you like the response structured?\n    <ul>\n      <li>Full Song Structure: \u201cWrite a song about lost love\u2014give me verses, chorus, and a bridge.\u201d<\/li>\n      <li>Production Tips: \u201cGive me suggested instrumentation, production and arrangement ideas, and genre references that would fit this song.\u201d<\/li>\n      <li>Idea List: \u201cBrainstorm 10 titles for a song about defying expectations.\u201d or \u201cGive me 20 metaphors about struggling to succeed.\u201d<\/li>\n    <\/ul>\n  <\/li>\n  <li><strong>E: Extras<\/strong> &#8211; Any additional context or instructions you\u2019d like to provide?\n    <ul>\n      <li>New Session: \u201cStart fresh; forget all previous song ideas.\u201d (Note: Depending on the AI, it may be better to actually create a new session, as the AI may not be good at \u2018forgetting\u2019 mid-session.)<\/li>\n      <li>Reasoning: \u201cExplain why you chose that topic shift in the second verse.\u201d or \u201cWhat makes this chorus so catchy?\u201d<\/li>\n      <li>Collaboration: \u201cBased on my style, what other writers should I study for inspiration?\u201d<\/li>\n    <\/ul>\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<P>\u201cC.R.E.A.T.E. is a helpful way to start,\u201d Camp says. \u201cBut once you get comfortable, you\u2019ll find your own tricks for getting the results you want.\u201d\n<\/em><\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-learning-to-write-and-rewrite-nbsp-with-nbsp-artificial-nbsp-intelligence\"><strong>Learning to Write and Rewrite&nbsp;with&nbsp;Artificial&nbsp;Intelligence<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Camp says one of their favorite aspects of using AI is its ability to generate countless variations of a single lyric or song, which they say has even improved their ear for quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I hear a song done in a folk version, then in a soul version, then in a dubstep version, I know right away whether the lyric works or not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They explain that AI allows them to hear ideas quickly and explore multiple approaches without the typical time constraints of a human session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI always need somebody in the room who sings, and I always need them to be able to sing something, because I\u2019m never going to know whether a lyric lands until I hear it coming out of somebody\u2019s mouth. It can look amazing on paper and fall completely flat, and that could be a melody issue, it could be that it doesn\u2019t fit the singer\u2019s persona. It could be any number of reasons, but I need to hear it instantiated and I\u2019m rate-limited when I\u2019m writing with humans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/faculty\/ben-camp?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"STUDY SONGWRITING ONLINE WITH BEN CAMP (opens in a new tab)\">STUDY SONGWRITING ONLINE WITH BEN CAMP<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They explain how a typical songwriting session in LA is about four hours, and if the songwriters don\u2019t nail a particular track in that time, it\u2019s unlikely anybody will revisit that song. This is maybe where AI has helped Camp the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you don\u2019t get the right lyric, or the right line, that could be the reason that an otherwise good song gets shelved, and I can\u2019t spend all four hours of the time asking the singer to sing me back 37 different versions of the line, each with a different rhyme word,\u201d they say, \u201cbut I can absolutely take three minutes to cut and paste the whole line in many different versions, and just hear it back to back.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-ethics-of-ai-generated-music\"><strong>The Ethics of AI-Generated Music<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Camp acknowledges that AI-generated music comes with ethical questions, especially concerning who gets credit for the art and whether creators are compensated fairly. They approach these discussions openly in class, encouraging students to consider both legal and moral implications. As Camp explains, \u201cIt\u2019s not just from a legal standpoint, but also from a moral standpoint.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> They invite students to think through \u201call the inputs that go into this equation\u201d and to recognize that \u201cthe actual questions are much thornier and deeper\u201d than just whether AI should be used in songwriting.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camp is mindful of AI\u2019s impact on human creators, particularly those whose work may have been used to train these models without consent. \u201cThe creators, the people who put the time and sweat into making the art,\u201d Camp says, \u201care they being compensated, and did they consent?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Camp, the decision to release AI-generated music is complex. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t released anything that I\u2019ve made with AI,\u201d Camp says, underscoring the care they take in deciding when, or if, AI should be part of their public work. \u201cThat\u2019s a line that I have not decided whether I will cross, at least not without attribution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, it seems like Camp will be interfacing with artificial intelligence and songwriting from now on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think that the only reasons why I wouldn\u2019t use AI in my creative process is if one of my collaborators was opposed to it,\u201d they say, \u201cor if the power was out.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Explore how Berklee Online instructor Ben Camp is helping songwriters harness the creative potential of AI.
