Chappell Roan), Daniel Nigro, and Justin Tranter<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/andrea-stolpe\/?pid=8023&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-promotion\" target=\"_blank\">Andrea Stolpe<\/a>, who wrote the <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/commercial-songwriting-techniques\/?pid=8023&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-promotion\" target=\"_blank\">Commercial Songwriting Techniques<\/a> <\/em>course, says:<\/strong> If a Grammy could be given for a song that is both artistic and accessible, it might be delivered to Chappell Roan. The melodies are undeniably contagious at first listen. I believe that she\u2019s not even trying, allowing the chaos to shine in that bridge, and maybe even channeling a little Tori Amos. I\u2019ve got to give her props for the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/prosody-in-music-and-songwriting\/?pid=8023&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-promotion\" target=\"_blank\">prosody<\/a> happening at the ending, with symbolism dripping from the slowing of the track while she sings \u201cyou\u2019d have to stop the world just to stop the feeling.\u201d Where Chappell grows from here we\u2019ll have to see, but I\u2019d pick her out of a mix any day on the basis of her melody writing and overall mood she\u2019s able to paint with just a few chords and lyric language that isn\u2019t trying to sell me any cheap tricks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/bonnie-hayes?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\">Bonnie Hayes<\/a> is program director of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/music-degrees\/graduate\/songwriting?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\">Songwriting graduate program<\/a> and author of several Berklee Online songwriting courses. She wrote two songs on Bonnie Raitt\u2019s <em>Nick of Time<\/em>, which won the <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/podcast-episode-031-songwriter-bonnie-hayes-on-sexism-drugs-and-rock-n-roll\/?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Album of the Year Grammy in 1990<\/a>. Hayes also cites that same lyric as a standout in \u201cGood Luck, Babe!\u201d<\/strong>: In terms of which song <em>should<\/em> get the award, I would love to see Chappell Roan, Justin Tranter, and Daniel Nigro\u2014all astonishingly talented songwriters\/producers\u2014get the award. The song is by far the most interesting of the bunch, with these acrobatic\/operatic melodic leaps and a lyric that combines sarcasm and a beautiful truth wrapped in a metaphor\u2014\u201cyou\u2019d have to stop the world just to stop the feeling.\u201d And an actual bridge! We who write thought bridges were gone forever!<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/kareem-clarke?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\">Kareem Clarke<\/a>, who teaches <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/music-production-fundamentals-for-songwriters?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\">Music Production Fundamentals for Songwriters<\/a><\/em>, cites <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Grammy-2025-Chappell-Roan-Spotify.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"that line (opens in a new tab)\">that line<\/a> as well: <\/strong>There are some amazing songs in this category this year but I think that \u201cGood Luck, Babe!\u201d by Chappell Roan is a likely winner. The song has great writing and appeal with a lot of power in phrases like \u201cYou\u2019d have to stop the world just to stop the feeling.\u201d Paired with the melody chosen in the chorus and bridge, I think it has a strong chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/chad-shank?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\">Chad Shank<\/a>, who teaches <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/lyric-writing-tools-and-strategies?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\">Lyric Writing: Tools and Strategies<\/a><\/em>, says: <\/strong>My instinct is telling me the song of the year is a toss up between \u201cGood Luck, Babe!\u201d and \u201cPlease, Please, Please.\u201d When both of those songs dropped, I was hit with a feeling of being refreshed. It felt like some light was coming back into the pop songwriting world. Both songs are very strong melodically and lyrically, and they feel both modern and retro. I think that freshness is what puts those on the top, for me. I am also pumped that both songs were co-written by Berklee alums! Amy Allen and Justin Tranter have been very successful after Berklee, and it makes me proud to teach at a place like Berklee. I can\u2019t wait until I see some of my students\u2019 names on the list! I do think Chappell is going to win. I love that pop is finding a new creative and rebellious streak \u2026 and led by females! We need more female producers, writers, and engineers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-bar-song-tipsy-performed-by-shaboozey\"><strong>\u2018A Bar Song (Tipsy)\u2019 performed by Shaboozey<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Grammy-25-Shaboozey.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24615\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-songwriters-sean-cook-jerrel-jones-joe-kent-chibueze-collins-obinna-nevin-sastry-and-mark-williams\"><strong>Songwriters: Sean Cook, Jerrel Jones, Joe Kent, Chibueze Collins Obinna, Nevin Sastry, and Mark Williams<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/prince-charles-alexander\/?pid=8023&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-promotion\" target=\"_blank\">Prince Charles Alexander<\/a>\u2014himself a Grammy winner <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/podcast-episode-three-pt2-prince-charles-alexander\/?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\">for his engineering work<\/a>\u2014wrote the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/genre-survey-for-songwriters-analysis-and-application?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Genre Survey for Songwriters: Analysis and Application<\/a><\/em> course as well as several music production courses. Talking through his thought-process, he settles on \u201cA Bar Song (Tipsy),\u201d by Shaboozey, with a little bit of difficulty: <\/strong>Wow. This is not easy. My top three are \u201cPlease, Please, Please,\u201d \u201cA Bar Song,\u201d and \u201cDie With A Smile.\u201d From a songwriting and classic \u201cgreat performance\u201d point of view, I would give this to \u201cDie With A Smile.\u201d For a \u201ctongue in cheek\u201d freshness and a daring key change in the second verse, \u201cPlease, Please, Please\u201d piques my interest. For sheer No. 1 stamina, you have to give the nod to \u201cA Bar Song.\u201d Chappell Roan is having a great year with a great song and could be a sleeper. Taylor Swift is a consummate songwriter and always has a shot. I think \u201cA Bar Song\u201d <em>will<\/em> win. I think \u201cDie with a Smile\u201d <em>should<\/em> win.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>While<\/strong> <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/bonnie-hayes?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\">Bonnie Hayes<\/a> is putting stock in Chappell Roan, she says she also thinks Shaboozey could get the Song of the Year award: <\/strong>While I never put it past the Recording Academy to pick the most established, iconic artist for the Song of the Year award, regardless of the song, I\u2019m feeling like the song that\u2019s chosen will be Shaboozey\u2019s \u201cA Bar Song.\u201d Though he\u2019s a new artist, he might get that award. It\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/j-kwon-interview-tipsy-sample-shaboozey-grammy-1235174843\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"definitely a huge story (opens in a new tab)\">definitely a huge story<\/a>: first release from a Black country artist and spending 19 weeks at No. 1 (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stereogum.com\/2288737\/shaboozey-ties-lil-nas-x-for-longest-running-1-hit-of-all-time\/news\/\" target=\"_blank\">tying Lil Nas X\u2019s record for longest running No. 1 of all time!<\/a>) and 23 weeks at No. 1 on the Country charts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/kareem-clarke?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\">Kareem Clarke<\/a>, who predicted \u201cGood Luck, Babe!\u201d as his top pick, is also hedging his bets:<\/strong> I think it would be amazing if \u201cA Bar Song\u201d were able to come away with the award with its hip-hop and country cross. Even though I am not so keen on the saturated drum sound and the slight change from the regular vocal tone we are used to hearing from her, \u201cBirds of a Feather\u201d has my vote, as I am a big fan of catchy and memorable choruses. The effective use of dynamics and melodic range strengthens the delivery of the emotion on this track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/scarlet-keys?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\">Scarlet Keys<\/a> wrote the<em> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/songwriting-tools-and-techniques?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\">Songwriting Tools and Techniques<\/a><\/em> online course, and has taught courses dedicated to the songwriting of Taylor Swift on campus at Berklee College of Music as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/masterclasses\/?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">two-hour online masterclass<\/a>, but she agrees that Billie Eilish should win the Song of the Year Grammy: <\/strong>I think Taylor Swift is one of the best songwriters of our time but she has songs that are much more dazzling than \u201cFortnight.\u201d \u201cFortnight\u201d didn\u2019t bring anything new to the table musically or lyrically compared to some of Swift\u2019s other work. \u201cFortnight\u201d is a good song but if I had to pick a song of the year that stands out musically and lyrically, it would have to be Billie Eilish\u2019s \u201cBirds of a Feather\u201d for its uniqueness, and iconic pop writing. It\u2019s a hard call since there are so many great nominated songs but for my musical sensibility, the lyrics to \u201cBirds of a Feather\u201d are beautiful, and the melodic hooks just keep on coming. The song avoids the tonic note for the most part, which keeps the song moving and engaging and I find this song to be the most unique lyrically and compositionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-not-like-us-performed-by-kendrick-lamar\"><strong>\u2018Not Like Us\u2019 performed by Kendrick Lamar<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Grammy-25-Lamar.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24617\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-songwriter-kendrick-lamar\"><strong>Songwriter: Kendrick Lamar<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/christina-mattei?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\">Christina Mattei<\/a><\/strong>, who teaches <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/music-production-fundamentals-for-songwriters?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-link-from-article\" target=\"_blank\">Music Production Fundamentals for Songwriters<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, says<\/strong>: Kendrick Lamar\u2019s will hands-down be the most remembered song and should win the Grammy for Song of the Year.
