His music career was not where he wanted it to be, and he was taking a break from his <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/music-degrees\/undergraduate\/music-business?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Music Business bachelor\u2019s degree<\/a> program at Berklee Online after having two kids during the pandemic.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI got to a point where I was like, \u2018I think that I\u2019m just going to stop doing music altogether,\u2019 and I put my house up for sale,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd I mean, I listed my house on the market, and was about to move to Houston. And then, I don\u2019t know. There was something about getting that close to that moment of finality that was like, \u2018Let\u2019s really give it one more go.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frank had one year left in his program, so he decided to stay in Nashville and give himself one year to finish his degree and try to make progress in his music career. If it didn\u2019t work out, he would put his house back on the market and move on. He called this his year of \u201cyes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m saying \u2018yes\u2019 to everything, every opportunity that comes,\u201d he says. \u201cDon\u2019t turn anything down, even if it makes you uncomfortable, even if you think you\u2019re not ready for the opportunity. I had been telling everybody that this is the year of \u2018yes.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exactly one year later, Frank\u2019s music is featured on a new ad for Major League Baseball (MLB) that began airing July 4th and will run through the rest of the 2025 baseball season. And \u201cexactly one year later\u201d is no exaggeration; he listed his house on the market July 4th weekend of 2024.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"You Seeing This? The commercial features actor Adam DeVine, and baseball players such as Aaron Judge from the New York Yankees, Julio Rodr\u00edguez from the Seattle Mariners, Bobby Witt Jr. from the Kansas City Royals, Paul Skenes from the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Shohei Ohtani from the LA Dodgers.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stepping-up-to-the-plate\"><strong>Stepping up to the Plate<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In January 2025, Frank enrolled in Berklee Online\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/writing-and-producing-advertising-music?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Writing and Producing Advertising Music<\/em><\/a> course, authored by <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/peter-bell?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peter Bell<\/a> and taught by <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/katie-day?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Katie Day<\/a>, a Berklee alum and the creative director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortcakemusic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shortcake Music<\/a>. Katie took the course in 2018 and stayed in touch with Peter as she started up her music production house (the basis of a 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/katie-day-starts-music-production-house-after-taking-writing-and-producing-advertising-music-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Take Note<\/em> profile<\/a>). In 2024, when Peter retired, he asked Katie to take over teaching the Berklee Online course.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe mentored me and that was incredibly helpful to get my company off the ground, and then we just kept in touch,\u201d says Katie about Peter. \u201cHe casually mentioned at one point that whenever he does retire, would I be interested in teaching the class, because it\u2019s a very niche industry. And I was like, \u2018Oh, my gosh, yeah, that would be such an honor!\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an elective course towards his degree program, Frank didn\u2019t go into <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/writing-and-producing-advertising-music?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Writing and Producing Advertising Music<\/em><\/a> with any expectations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHonestly, it was just a class I signed up for,\u201d he says. \u201cI never would have even thought of myself as a composer. Singer, songwriter, producer, sure, but specifically scoring to picture\u2014it just wasn\u2019t something that I had really explored.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As it turns out, Frank had a knack for writing music for advertising and Katie picked up on his talent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrank was asking all the right questions,\u201d she says. \u201cHe was there to really be a sponge, and to learn as much as he could about the industry and how it works. That made me feel like he was going places, because that\u2019s how I was when I took the class in 2018. I was there to be a sponge and to ask questions and to learn as much as I could, so I could actually go do it in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-baseball-is-something-else\"><strong>Baseball Is Something Else<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After the semester ended, Katie\u2019s company was hired to collaborate on an ad for MLB\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/brand-marketing\/mlb-ad-fans-aaron-judge-shohei-ohtani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Baseball Is Something Else<\/a>\u201d campaign with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodsportscreative.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Good Sports Creative<\/a>, an advertising agency in Portland, Oregon. The campaign, which initially launched in 2023, was part of an initiative to attract younger fans to baseball, which coincided with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/sports\/baseball\/mlb-baseball-rule-changes-rcna194896\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new rule changes<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A die-hard Chicago Cubs fan (who has mixed feelings about the new rule changes), this wasn\u2019t Katie\u2019s first time working on a baseball campaign. In 2016, her song \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/LSuc0G_QnUc?si=9i6x8Rl85mEa2x7V\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">By the Lakeside<\/a>\u201d became the Cubs\u2019 victory song when they won the World Series. And in 2024, Katie arranged a mashup of \u201cCalifornia Love\u201d and \u201cEmpire State of Mind\u201d for an ad promoting the highly anticipated World Series between the Dodgers and Yankees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Empire State of California Love\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EM93kDHQ4uQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">MLB ad that ran, leading up to the 2024 World Series between the Dodgers and Yankees. Alicia Keys.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was really fun to do an edit of those two songs together, and then from there we got in with this company [Good Sports Creative] that does a lot of work for MLB,\u201d says Katie. \u201cI\u2019ve always been really into baseball, so the fact that the coolest stuff that we\u2019ve gotten to do now is a handful of things for MLB, it\u2019s my dream come true, obviously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-swinging-for-the-fences\"><strong>Swinging for the Fences<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once Shortcake had been hired for the 2025 \u201cBaseball Is Something Else\u201d ad, it was on Katie to compile some demos to pitch MLB\u2014she wrote a few, her partner wrote some, and she brought in two composers to contribute, including Frank, which eventually led to another dream come true. Each composer received a demo fee, and the one whose track was chosen would go on to score the full ad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI remember Katie saying to me towards the end of the class, \u2018Frank, we are going to work together,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cI didn&#8217;t know whether or not it was going to turn out. It\u2019s just one of those things like, \u2018Okay, keep me in mind if anything comes up.\u2019 Two weeks later, Katie called me and was like, \u2018I got something.\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018Okay, well, what are we looking at?\u2019 And she said MLB. And I\u2019m just like, \u2018I\u2019m sorry, what?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Katie stresses that the chance to write a demo was exactly that: a chance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t like, \u2018I\u2019m putting all of this on you, and I\u2019m trusting you with this right away.\u2019 I was like, \u2018Here\u2019s a demo fee if you want to take a shot at this.\u2019 So it was not going to be a ton of skin off my back if it didn\u2019t work out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-knocking-it-out-of-the-park-nbsp\"><strong>Knocking It Out of the Park&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Out of the 25 demos Katie submitted for Shortcake, Frank\u2019s was the one that MLB wanted to move forward with.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was just so shocked\u2014I\u2019m still shocked at the magnitude of the opportunity, but then also, wow, she really trusts me to take this on,\u201d says Frank about Katie. \u201cTo see someone have that level of confidence and support in you makes you look at yourself and say, \u2018Man, you really are doing this! You really have what it takes!\u2019 And I think that\u2019s what Katie was for me. She was so supportive and really championed me in the work that I was doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That kicked off a fast-moving, collaborative process, refining the track, scratching it completely, changing genres, and arriving at a hip-hop sound with Latin flair that MLB was happy with. At first Frank was working with a brief and a storyboard, and then once the commercial was shot, he had to edit the song to the picture, and send back revisions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very rigorous process,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was one thing hearing Katie talk about it in class, and it\u2019s a whole other ball game\u2014I promise that pun is not intended\u2014when you\u2019re in it. Things are subject to change; nothing is set in stone until it\u2019s set in stone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-heart-of-the-game\"><strong>The Heart of the Game<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Katie said she didn\u2019t know about Frank\u2019s year of \u201cyes\u201d and that he almost gave up on music altogether.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt just really makes me feel so fulfilled in what I\u2019m doing with my life, like it is making an impact, and it means something to somebody,\u201d says Katie tearfully. \u201cThere have been times when I almost gave up, too, and I feel like you almost have to get to that point a couple of times. And then when you overcome that, you\u2019re just in it to win it, no matter what, and that\u2019s kind of where I\u2019ve been now for the last couple of years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frank seems to be headed in that direction as well. In May, he walked at Berklee\u2019s 2025 Commencement ceremony and is expected to graduate with his <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/music-degrees\/undergraduate\/music-business?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bachelor\u2019s degree in Music Business<\/a> in the fall. He also founded his own business called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soundfamous.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sound Famous<\/a>, offering scoring, composition, and sound design services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYour whole life can change in one year,\u201d says Frank. \u201cThis wasn\u2019t something I was looking for. I didn\u2019t even know it existed. I was just taking a class, and because of what I was doing, because of who I was, and what I was contributing, someone saw value in me.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Frank Louis was ready to leave music behind\u2014until Katie Day&#8217;s Berklee Online class helped him discover a new path in advertising music.
