Jane Austen novels end with the engagement, and this is the first time in Taylor\u2019s career that we will now witness her having found love and then nurture and navigate it as it is carved and changed with time, familiarity, and possibly even children.\n <\/p>\n \n \n As she matures, she brings new layers and dimensions to her lyrical content, and hopefully we will see her writing from new perspectives\u2014the newlywed, the married woman, the mother and the mother\/wife. Taylor is a creative force and I feel will always be a prolific writer because she is a diarist at heart and uses writing to explore her own internal and external landscapes. I look forward to the songs that are waiting to be written.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n Keys\u2019s point underscores something important: Swift\u2019s story is not ending with this engagement. In fact, it may be the beginning of the richest storytelling of her career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Few milestones hold as much symbolic weight in songwriting as marriage. Some of the new topics, I think we can expect from Taylor would include: the elation of a serious relationship commitment, the struggles of an ongoing serious relationship, and the way that the relationship interacts with both partners\u2019 professional lives. I also predict that her harmonic and melodic vocabulary will expand to encompass this new set of emotions.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n Taylor has already moved from the high school snapshots of her 2006 debut (Taylor Swift<\/a><\/em>) to the mythologies of 2020\u2019s Folklore<\/a><\/em>, demonstrating her ability to evolve, er, um, swiftly. Marriage could invite her into broader thematic and musical territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Taylor Swift wouldn\u2019t be the first songwriter to chronicle the highs and lows of marriage in her music. Bruce Springsteen used his 1987 album, Tunnel of Love<\/em><\/a>, to explore the uncertainty and fragility of relationships<\/a>, even while newly married. Marvin Gaye had taken it even further in 1978 with Here, My Dear<\/em><\/a>, a double album written about (and handed over as part of) the financial settlement in his divorce from Anna Gordy Gaye. <\/p>\n\n\n\n John Lennon not only wrote about Yoko Ono; he wrote her into his titles, with songs like \u201cThe Ballad of John and Yoko<\/a>,\u201d \u201cDear Yoko<\/a>,\u201d and \u201cOh Yoko!<\/a>\u201d practically turning their relationship into a genre of its own. Its nature provides a writer\u2019s framework for how relationships work, and for the ways we were prior to marriage. \n Beyonc\u00e9 moved from \u2018Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)\u2019<\/a> \n and \u2018Broken-Hearted Girl\u2019<\/a> pre-marriage, to \n \u2018Drunk in Love\u2019<\/a> and \n \u2018Rocket\u2019<\/a> during the first phase of her marriage, \n and has evolved to community themes in her past few albums since; \n RENAISSANCE<\/em><\/a> (dance community) and \n COWBOY CARTER<\/em><\/a> (country community). \n It seems that her work has reflected the \u2018I\u2019 of one\u2019s self, the \u2018WE\u2019 of one\u2019s marriage and family, and the \u2018US\u2019 of one\u2019s community in a well-choreographed evolution, which is a hallmark of her excellence as a creative artist! I am definitely a fan!\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n Swift may find herself following a similar arc: beginning with the \u201cI\u201d of her love life to the \u201cwe\u201d of marriage. In time, that could grow into songs reflecting the communities and commitments built along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the most common questions about songwriting in marriage is whether happiness dulls the creative edge. Bonnie Hayes<\/a>, Grammy-winning songwriter and Program Director of Berklee Online\u2019s Songwriting graduate program<\/a> (as well as the author of the Writing and Analyzing Hit Songs<\/em><\/a> course, and co-author of several<\/a> other<\/a> songwriting<\/a> courses), says this tension is real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n \n \u201cIt\u2019s an interesting question. I certainly have found that it\u2019s harder to write songs when I\u2019m happy in my home\/love life. That\u2019s partly because of the conflicts that arise when you want to spend all your time making out with someone you adore instead of sitting around in stinky little writing rooms with lifer nerds, and partly because it\u2019s just so much less compelling in terms of content\u2014is \u2018we are living happily ever after, madly in love, for eternity\u2026\u2019 going to feel urgent, necessary, human? Blecch! Listeners (and songwriters) need drama, they need beginnings and endings, trouble, thrills and despair\u2014not that part in the middle where nothing happens except the day-to-day of caring about another person. That might lead a person for whom songwriting is elemental to their identity to create drama! But somehow I don\u2019t see Taylor doing that.\n <\/p>\n \n \n Songwriters write to know ourselves, and as we get older, loving someone in that steady, true way becomes more important to discovering those rooms inside of one\u2019s self that you never dreamed were there. If anyone can write songs about being happy in love, it\u2019d be Taylor Swift! She\u2019s a master, and my hope is that she\u2019ll give us a master class in writing happy love songs.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n Swift\u2019s challenge\u2014and opportunity\u2014will be to make the ordinary extraordinary.
