What Musicians Should Know"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-openai-s-sora-2-means-for-musicians-from-deepfake-risks-to-new-creative-possibilities\"><strong>What OpenAI\u2019s Sora 2 Means for Musicians, from Deepfake Risks to New Creative Possibilities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When OpenAI released Sora 2 at the end of September 2025, the internet flooded with absurd short videos, like Einstein fighting in a UFC boxing match, Ronald McDonald riding a giant hamburger in a police chase, and Michael Jackson hanging out with Walter White from <em>Breaking Bad<\/em>. Though access is still limited, some are saying that Sora is taking \u201cbrain-rot\u201d content and \u201cAI slop\u201d to a whole new level. IP holders are pushing OpenAI to restrict use of copyrighted characters, and public figures are calling for stronger safeguards over their likeness. Amid the concerns about copyright violation and deception, some see the creative potential of generating nearly any video imaginable, once (and if) these issues get sorted out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-sora-2\"><strong>What is Sora 2?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sora 2 is a text-to-video model created by OpenAI, the same company behind ChatGPT. It allows users to type a written prompt and generate a short video based on that description. Sora includes a social media component, where users can view, share, and interact with AI-generated videos on a feed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"This is Sora 2\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lEcg6AJ6DVY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sora 2, the text-to-video model created by OpenAI.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ben Camp, the course author of <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/ai-for-songwriters?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>AI for Songwriters<\/em><\/a> at Berklee Online, has been experimenting with the web browser version of Sora 2. So far, they say it\u2019s pretty convincing. \u201cI haven\u2019t tried anything ambitious with it, but what I\u2019ve seen has been pretty decent. The quality of the output is better than most of the videos that I see on Instagram.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, Camp says it\u2019s not perfect. \u201cYou can\u2019t see reflections on what should have reflections in the glass, that might be a tell that it\u2019s AI-generated. Or for example, the quality of the video will be a little bit\u2014not grainy\u2014but look like it\u2019s from an iPhone. Whereas the quality of the lighting will look like it\u2019s from a Hollywood scene.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-has-access-to-sora-2\"><strong>Who Has Access to Sora 2?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As of October 2025, Sora 2 is limited to users in the US and Canada. The app is currently available on iOS (iPhone), though users can still use Sora via web browser. Access is invite-only and requires a code.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cameo-feature\"><strong>Cameo Feature<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Users have the option to use the \u201ccameo\u201d feature to record their faces and voices to appear in videos created by Sora. In the settings, you can select whether you want your likeness to be available only to you, to your followers, or to all users. There\u2019s always the question of whether the technology will honor your level of consent once it has your data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf everything goes gravy, then when I opt out and OpenAI says, \u2018Okay, we\u2019re not going to generate anything that looks like Ben,\u2019 and that\u2019s the end of that. If things don\u2019t go gravy, then users can find ways to bypass my opt-out request, and make any deepfake Ben Camp videos they want,\u201d says Camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-copyrighted-content\"><strong>Copyrighted Content<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest news stories surrounding Sora 2 have involved the issue of copyright infringement in Hollywood. Initially, OpenAI said that studios would be opted into Sora 2 unless they opted out. After intense pushback from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motionpictures.org\/press\/mpa-issues-statement-on-openais-recent-release-of-sora-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Motion Picture Association<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sagaftra.org\/member-message-message-president-sean-astin-and-ned-duncan-crabtree-ireland-regarding-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SAG-AFTRA<\/a>, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.samaltman.com\/sora-update-number-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blog post<\/a> on his website, \u201cWe will give rightsholders more granular control over generation of characters, similar to the opt-in model for likeness but with additional controls.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf Sora can generate new episodes of <em>South Park<\/em>, or <em>The Simpsons<\/em>, or <em>Rick and Morty<\/em>, there\u2019s a chance that people are going to just make their own fan-made episodes,\u201d says Camp. \u201cThat won\u2019t benefit all the people who spend all the time animating, creating, developing a concept, recording the voiceovers, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pikachu chasing Pok\u00e9mon with Sam Altman #sora2 #openai #soraai #pikachu #pokemon\" width=\"422\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vxoMrnRqDB8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ethical-concerns-nbsp\"><strong>Ethical Concerns&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to copyright infringement, one of the biggest concerns is the deception that could happen as a result of hyper-realistic videos with fake content.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFraud is a big issue and AI video is only going to increase the scale of it,\u201d says Camp. \u201cSomebody could generate content with your likeness and it\u2019s espousing a political view that you don\u2019t support, or supporting a company and you don\u2019t believe in their business practices, or is espousing hate speech. I think most people just wouldn\u2019t want their likeness to be able to be used to generate speech that disagrees with their beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-could-sora-affect-the-music-industry\"><strong>How Could Sora Affect the Music Industry?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Deception doesn\u2019t have to be on a grand scale in order to cause damage, particularly in the music industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf I can pose as you, and release music, I&#8217;m going to capture your audience,\u201d says Camp. \u201cThose fans may form a bad opinion of you if they don\u2019t like what I release, or maybe I collect some of your royalties, or maybe you lose fans because of what I\u2019m posting. There\u2019s any number of scenarios that could be detrimental to artists. I shouldn\u2019t be able to deepfake you, and manipulate your audience. Your fans are yours, not AI\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-possibilities\"><strong>Possibilities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While there is plenty to be cautious about in regards to Sora 2, there are ways in which it could help musicians and artists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhether we\u2019re talking AI music generators, or AI videos, image or video generators, or AI text generators, I as an artist have access to tools that I can make a music video that I just could not have made before, that was physically impossible to make before, or financially prohibitive to make before,\u201d says Camp. \u201cIf you give an artist a tool, they\u2019ll figure out a way to make art with it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-this-matters-to-musicians\"><strong>Why This Matters to Musicians<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you\u2019re eager to download Sora 2 or stay as far away from it as possible, Camp says that staying up to date on these technological advances and knowing what they\u2019re capable of will only help musicians in the long run.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI do think that people should be educated about it. Media literacy is important, and AI literacy is important, whether or not you\u2019re pro or anti,\u201d says Camp. \u201cAnd that\u2019s part of the reason that I teach the <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/ai-for-songwriters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/ai-for-songwriters?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>AI for Songwriters<\/em><\/a><\/em><\/a> course; I invite people who are actively against it, not because I want to change their minds, but because I think it\u2019s important to have the discourse about it, and understand what it can do.
