They both <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/berklee-online-masters-alumni-receive-2025-music-production-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">earned awards<\/a> for their <em>Culminating Experience<\/em> projects, and both founded their own production businesses. Nearly a year after finishing their degrees, the former classmates have reunited, this time as collaborators on a new four-song EP titled <em>Urban Sound Studio Presents \u201csir\u201d Luminous and Todd Urban<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Urban Sound Studio Presents\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/3JWFSrFxOdt4KdVKfd3AXp?si=dY-HjSFkQiyuuOEVnxHGBQ&amp;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just trying to get everyone to love that feel-good music again,\u201d says Vitale, who performs under the artist name \u201csir\u201d Luminous. \u201cWe really just wanted people to get up and dance and have a good time. No matter what negativity is going on in the world, it\u2019s okay to dance, it\u2019s okay to have fun, it\u2019s okay to smile and be happy and be silly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vitale and Urban first began collaborating while taking music production courses at Berklee Online, exchanging peer feedback as part of their assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the pieces of feedback I remember giving was just, \u2018Man, you can sing!\u2019\u201d says Urban about Vitale. \u201cWhen we think about a music production and engineering degree, we\u2019re usually thinking about people who want to mix or produce. So it\u2019s rare when someone comes in and also has a killer voice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After hearing Vitale\u2019s <em>Culminating Experience<\/em> project, which was a <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/5KTtjbCp9KHJHbtpO85Up2?si=ifxF9aZHQ8S3Mbmk5s79DA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contemporary R&amp;B album<\/a>, Urban was curious what Vitale would sound like singing a more classic R&amp;B style.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was like, \u2018Have you ever tried singing like James Brown or Motown?\u2019\u201d Urban says. \u201cAnd he goes, \u2018I love that stuff.\u2019 I said, \u2018Well, why aren\u2019t you doing it?\u2019 That\u2019s kind of how it started. I just thought, \u2018Man, I have to hear you sing that. I want to hear you modernize the classic sound.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two began collaborating remotely, with Vitale based in Connecticut and Urban in New Jersey. Their songwriting process started by exchanging voice notes and lyric ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe way I write is weird; I need to mumble gibberish, and then I start hearing words in it,\u201d says Vitale. \u201cWhen we first started, that\u2019s exactly what I did, and then I would write the lyrics, send them to Todd, and we\u2019d just go back and forth like that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the reggae-inspired track \u201cFeeling Good,\u201d Vitale received some help from his fianc\u00e9e, songwriter <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/6hJCxdnIhFZMvZGxUbRwzP?si=VaG3jwQISPGCi8aGRB9OpQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emma Bilyou<\/a>, with whom he launched a full-service entertainment company, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lyraviberecords.com\/aboutus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lyra Vibe Records<\/a>, after graduation. With Lyra Vibe, Vitale, Bilyou, and his mother offer music, photography, and videography services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Urban focused heavily on the instrumentation of the tracks he made with Vitale. Coming from an orchestral background, he plays viola, violin, cello, bass, and piano. He also works as general manager at the audio technology company Softube, teaches music production at a community college, and runs his company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbansoundstudio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Urban Sound Studio<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first song on the EP titled \u201cBroke Livin\u2019 Rich\u201d is a funky dose of self-talk to stay upbeat even though you\u2019re down to your \u201cLast $10.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTodd had a groove going, and I was like, \u2018You know, I really want to tap into that James Brown type of thing,\u2019\u201d Vitale says. \u201cSo I was just fooling around and came up with, \u2018Shit! Afterpay took my last $10.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018oh my gosh, there it is!\u2019 Then I just went from there and sent Todd the idea, and he loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lyrics reference the tech company that allows shoppers to split purchases into multiple payments. The playful theme carries throughout the EP, blending classic soul influences with modern production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After figuring out the lyrics and sending Logic and Pro Tools sessions back and forth, the pair finally met up to record the EP in person.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTodd came to Connecticut, and that\u2019s when we recorded all four songs in the same day,\u201d Vitale says. \u201cJust one session, recorded them all, but everything else was remote, which makes this project even more special.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the EP was released on streaming platforms, they shared it with the Music Production department at Berklee Online and received encouraging feedback from their former instructors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/sean-slade?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sean Slade<\/a> called the EP \u201cAn artful buffet of pop delights!\u201d with his pick hit being \u201cNot the Guy.\u201d He went on to say, \u201cTo think this magic collaboration came out of our weekly <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/courses\/culminating-experience-in-music-production-1?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Culminating Experience<\/em><\/a> Live Classes makes me happy beyond words.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/instructors\/enrique-gonzalez-muller?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Enrique Gonzalez M\u00fcller<\/a>, director of the Music Production program at Berklee Online, says the collaboration highlights what the program is all about.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always inspiring to see how the <em>Culminating Experience<\/em> becomes more than a final project\u2014it often sparks connections that lead to real artistic and collaborative breakthroughs. Dean Vitale and Todd Urban embody the collaborative spirit that defines Berklee Online: two artists who began as peers and emerged as creative partners, transforming mutual respect into a shared vision,\u201d says Gonzalez M\u00fcller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vitale and Urban say they plan to continue working together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTodd is absolutely amazing; he\u2019s extremely talented. From production to mixing to mastering, he\u2019s great. So we\u2019re definitely going to be working again\u2014whether he likes it or not,\u201d Vitale jokes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The admiration is mutual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s going to be my go-to guy from now on,\u201d says Urban. \u201cWe have dozens of songs that we\u2019re going to dig into over the next few years together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their collaboration shows that fruitful creative partnerships don\u2019t need to be in person.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBerklee Online brought us together to make this happen,\u201d says Vitale. \u201cIf we weren\u2019t in the same class, we
