Paradoxically, it wasn\u2019t until the invention of sound recording that we first <em>lost<\/em> immersion\u2014mono reduced the world to a single-point source, becoming the baseline from which later developments worked to rebuild dimensionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contemporary practice, four broad categories of immersive music production have emerged. The first centers on an authentic, often hyper-realistic reproduction of an acoustic environment, exemplified by Morten Lindberg\u2019s recordings that place the listener inside a vivid, enveloping performance space in the midst of the performers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"TUVAYHUN: II. I am Poor\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sqT1OjX0Zfk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\n    Morten Lindberg served as the studio producer, balance engineer, and mastering engineer for this 2022 album, <em>TUVAYHUN: Beatitudes for a Wounded World<\/em>.\n  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second involves reimagining material originally conceived for mono or stereo, which requires partially deconstructing a work built around a two-dimensional soundstage; the Beatles Atmos remixes demonstrate both the potential and the controversy of this approach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Come Together (2019 Mix)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wqaKHHxQFZc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u201cHe bag production\u201d: Giles Martin (son of legendary Beatles producer George Martin) and Sam Okell worked on the Beatles Atmos mixes. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/beatles-best-spatial-audio-albums-apple-music-abbey-road-giles-martin-1202832\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this 2021 <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> interview<\/a>, Martin says doing an immersive mix is \u201ca bit like doing an autopsy, where you\u2019re opening up the body and you\u2019re showing the separate parts.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third category includes modern productions created in stereo but with an awareness that immersive expansion is possible\u2014Jacob Collier, for instance, often writes with an implicit three-dimensional sensibility even in a stereo workflow.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jacob Collier - Witness Me (feat.  Shawn Mendes, Stormzy &amp; Kirk Franklin) [Official Music Video]\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zb0ge6rIg-w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&nbsp;Jacob Collier often writes and records music with immersive mixes in mind.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fourth and final category consists of music conceived explicitly for immersive playback, where the immersive version is the primary artistic statement and the stereo mix is a reduced translation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Justin Gray \u2013 Tapestry (Official Video) | From the Grammy-Nominated Album IMMERSED\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XS2vxL-uTEs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Justin Gray\u2019s <em>Immersed<\/em> is a compelling demonstration of the philosophy that the immersive version is the primary artistic statement, exploring what becomes possible when one composes and produces directly for a multidimensional canvas.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, we will focus particularly on the fourth category, while recognizing that the techniques and concepts presented here meaningfully enhance the immersive experience across <em>all<\/em> forms of immersive music production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-staging-and-pan-automation\"><strong>Staging and Pan Automation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When we start exploring immersive audio, we\u2019ll always return to the same foundation: human instinct and the way our senses constantly interpret and contextualize the world around us. It\u2019s worth reviewing the essential patterns. Sounds in front of us command the greatest share of our auditory attention. Sounds arriving from behind are perceived as lower in level and softer in high-frequency content, but important (vocals\/solos) or sudden sounds from the rear can command a strong response. Elevation cues come from the subtle filtering\/notching effects of our outer ears\u2014spectral notching\u2014an individualized set of timbral signatures that tell the brain whether something is above or below us.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"938\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/immersive_audio_article_image_2026_2.jpg\" alt=\"An illustration of the way the brain processes different frequencies, and the angles at which they reach the human ear.\" class=\"wp-image-27644\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And high-frequency-rich sounds anchor themselves most clearly in space because their timbral details make directional differences more obvious to our auditory system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"938\" src=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/immersive_audio_article_image_2026_3.jpg\" alt=\"An illustration of spectral notching in the outer ear.\" class=\"wp-image-27645\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we stage a recording in three dimensions, these instincts matter. If we want the listener engaged and enveloped, we tend to place the core musical elements\u2014the ones we want people to focus on\u2014toward the front. We extend the traditional left\u2013right panorama outward into a wider horizontal field, wrapping the listener without sacrificing clarity. Supporting material that enhances a sense of space often lives to the sides and rear, while height channels and special effects provide vertical dimension or textural sparkle without pulling focus from the musical narrative. Percussion, transitional gestures, and atmospheric elements can be placed with more creativity, so long as they contribute to immersion rather than distraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But to truly deepen our understanding of staging, we need to talk about motion. Any movement in the auditory field captures attention in a distinct way. It\u2019s not far removed from what we achieve in stereo with carefully shaped level automation\u2014a subtle push that makes one voice momentarily stand out. Immersive formats simply allow us to reimagine that toolset. A sound that passes by us\u2014front to back, back to front, or across the listening plane\u2014automatically draws more cognitive bandwidth. Our brains are wired to track motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-macro-motion\">Macro Motion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In immersive mixing, there are two broad categories for 3D motion-based panning: macro and micro motion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Macro motion is a large gesture that sweeps a sound over a large area. Typically, these gestures are for primary sonic components that are meant to captivate. An example would be a riser like the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jl4gVNrmtaI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">THX theme<\/a> that could come from the rear height and pan forward and down to the front over its course. If we turn again toward Jacob Collier, you can hear this at the 51-second mark in the mix of \u201c100,000 Voices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jacob Collier - 100,000 Voices\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JbxO8ZC6EYc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Even if you\u2019re only using two speakers to listen to \u201c100,000 Voices,\u201d you can still feel the song\u2019s immersive nature in its macro motion. Plus, the video, derived from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C3GxQsRtJG4\/?img_index=1\">Dustin Yellin\u2019s&nbsp; <em>Djesse Vol. 4<\/em> glass sculpture<\/a>, gives visual depth!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Macro motion usually captivates our attention and has the potential to add dramatic effect to an already dramatic musical moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-micro-motion\">Micro Motion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By contrast, micro motion is a small, often barely perceptible amount of movement applied to an element in the mix to increase presence through auditory interest. Dolby Music offers a particularly powerful approach here, using subtle, often tempo-related pan gestures that don\u2019t dramatically reposition a source but give it just enough spatial life to remain engaging. These movements operate almost below the level of conscious attention, yet the listener feels them. Rather than relying on fader rides that can increase masking or reduce dynamic contrast, micro motion lets the mix breathe. It adds vitality, preserves dynamic range, and creates a more fluid, engaging soundfield\u2014one that feels alive without calling overt attention to its own mechanics. By tying the motion to the song\u2019s tempo, it becomes woven into the rhythmic fabric of the production.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"callout-exercise\">\n  <div class=\"callout-exercise-title\"><strong>Callout:<\/strong><\/div>\n\n  <p>\n    Listen to these two excerpts.
