{"id":27854,"date":"2026-07-22T15:58:31","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T20:58:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/?p=27854"},"modified":"2026-07-22T22:58:19","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T03:58:19","slug":"chadney-christle-on-touring-with-jennifer-hudson-paying-it-forward-and-studying-film-scoring-with-berklee-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/takenote\/chadney-christle-on-touring-with-jennifer-hudson-paying-it-forward-and-studying-film-scoring-with-berklee-online\/","title":{"rendered":"Chadney Christle on Touring with Jennifer Hudson, Paying it Forward, and Studying Film Scoring with Berklee Online"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-singer-and-keyboardist-chadney-christle-shares-how-acts-of-kindness-got-her-a-gig-with-j-hud-and-how-she-is-leveling-up-at-berklee-online\"><strong>Singer and Keyboardist Chadney Christle Shares How Acts of Kindness Got Her a Gig with J.Hud and How She Is Leveling up at Berklee Online<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2006, Chadney Christle went to the movie theater with a friend near her hometown of Dallas, Texas to see <em>Dreamgirls<\/em>, starring Beyonc\u00e9, Anika Noni Rose, and Jennifer Hudson in her film debut following <em>American Idol<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were the only ones that literally stood up in the theater in the middle of the movie when she did, \u2018And I Am Telling You I\u2019m Not Going,\u2019 screaming and hollering at the top of our lungs,\u201d says Christle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jennifer Hudson - And I Am Telling You I&#039;m Not Going\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QsiSRSgqE4E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">Jennifer Hudson\u2019s Oscar-winning performance in the 2006 film <em>Dreamgirls<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly two decades later, Christle has gone from applauding Jennifer Hudson in the audience to helping her earn those standing ovations as Hudson\u2019s keyboardist, most recently on a 16-city North American tour with Josh Groban.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFast-forward, and I get to play that same song for this woman that I stood up for in the theater,\u201d says Christle. \u201cIt brings tears and chills to me. And she kills it every single time! I just sit there and look like I\u2019m still that girl in my 20s in the theater, watching her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2019, Christle has performed with Hudson on some of the world\u2019s biggest stages, including Madison Square Garden. At the same time she is working toward her bachelor\u2019s degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/online.berklee.edu\/music-degrees\/undergraduate\/music-composition-for-film-tv-and-games?campaign_id=7010Z000001ZkQgQAK&amp;pid=&amp;utm_source=takenote&amp;tum_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=bol-gen-takenote-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Music Composition for Film, TV, and Games<\/a> at Berklee Online, she has continued touring with Hudson, one of the few entertainers to achieve EGOT status (winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony). Like Hudson, Christle is building a multifaceted career. Alongside touring, she\u2019s preparing for a future in film composition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a movie connoisseur, so I\u2019ve always paid attention to what creates those special moments of sad music, happy music, playful music,\u201d says Christle. \u201cI wanted to find out how that works, and what that process looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-natural-performer\"><strong>A Natural Performer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While composing is new to Christle, performing has always come naturally to her. In fact, she was singing in her church at age five and directing the choir by age 12. As a teen, she auditioned twice for the performing arts high school in Dallas, but was rejected both times. In hindsight, she says she gained something far more valuable from attending public high school: a lifelong mentorship and friendship with her music teacher, Dr. Michelle Magee-Norfleet. Christle is even the godmother to Dr. Magee-Norfleet\u2019s daughter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Chadney Christle featured on Dallas Music Network: The Spotlight\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sYTxoyUZvVI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">Christle\u2019s performance and interview for the Dallas Music Network.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing denied to go there was one of the best things that could have ever happened to me,\u201d says Christle about the performing arts high school. \u201cFrom age 15 to nearly 40, this same person has been in my life and has taught me the true meaning of musicianship.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Magee-Norfleet encouraged Christle to pursue singing and piano, compete in music competitions, and become the president of the school\u2019s choir. And now Christle says that she is a music teacher because of her mentor. When she isn\u2019t touring, she teaches at a private school in Dallas for students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. She says the school and her students are very encouraging and flexible about her going on tour with Hudson.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe last week of school, I still had to finish work,\u201d she says. \u201cBut they allowed me to go on the tour. Like, \u2018How dare we keep our music teacher from going on a tour?\u2019 They\u2019re very proud.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-kindness-comes-full-circle\">When Kindness Comes Full Circle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another unexpected connection would lead Christle to Hudson: Hudson\u2019s longtime friend and fellow <em>American Idol <\/em>contestant, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/georgehuff4real\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">George Huff<\/a>. After relocating from New Orleans to Dallas following Hurricane Katrina, Huff asked Christle to record on his EP. She gladly agreed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe basically didn\u2019t have the money to fund everything, and I did it for free,\u201d says Christle. \u201cI mean, I didn\u2019t think twice about it. He was a great guy, very sweet, and he told me he would never forget that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u2018American Idol\u2019 Finalist George Huff Surprises Jennifer Hudson Backstage\" width=\"422\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V6ciVG6xujk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">Hudson is close friends with fellow <em>American Idol<\/em> contestant George Huff, after they both made it to the top 10 on season 3 of the show. Christle and Huff knew each other from the Dallas music scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A decade later, Huff definitely did not forget. When Hudson needed a backup singer to perform with her at an Aretha Franklin tribute\u2014a precursor to her starring role in the 2021 biopic <em>Respect<\/em>\u2014Huff recommended Christle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe was like, \u2018I told you, I\u2019m never going to forget the people that were there for me with no strings attached,\u2019\u201d says Christle about Huff. \u201cAnd here I am. I\u2019ve been singing and playing for her ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christle emphasizes that this is an important lesson for all musicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEverything doesn\u2019t have to be monetary, because sometimes it comes in other forms of connections and opportunities that are priceless,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s what happened for me, because I wasn\u2019t looking for anything; I just was excited to help. And for him [Huff] to follow me and trust me . . . he\u2019s amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-performing-pavarotti-ear-training-for-the-win\"><strong>Performing Pavarotti: Ear Training for the Win!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Christle says that she has been able to use the skills that she\u2019s learning in her Berklee Online program while performing with Hudson. She first encountered the piece \u201cNessun Dorma\u201d from the opera <em>Turandot<\/em>, in high school, when Dr. Magee-Norfleet taught the choir about the famous moment when Aretha Franklin stepped in for Luciano Pavarotti during the 1998 Grammy Awards, and gave a flawless performance of the piece that became one of many career highlights.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The moment Aretha Franklin stepped in for Pavarotti\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hwtNrtHblZ8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">At the 1998 Grammy Awards, Aretha Franklin stepped in for Luciano Pavarotti at a moment\u2019s notice to perform \u201cNessun Dorma\u201d from the opera <em>Turandot.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Years later, Hudson was asked to perform the same piece for a private event, and Christle was able to put her music theory and ear training from Berklee Online to the test.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey put the chart in my face, and I go, \u2018Okay, that\u2019s music theory. Of course, I can play that by ear,\u2019\u201d says Christle. \u201cThat moment, I will never forget, and I said, \u2018This is why I\u2019m in school. This is what Berklee is teaching me right now.\u2019 That was probably my second gig with her [Hudson]. Among her first professional credits are two films streaming on Tubi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not sure where it\u2019s going to land me, but I\u2019m just grateful to have it in my back pocket,\u201d she says. \u201cJust got paid a couple of bucks, but my name is on there. I came up with that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This interview would simply not be complete without asking Chadney about the viral \u201cSpirit Tunnel\u201d segment from <em>The<\/em> <em>Jennifer Hudson Show<\/em>, where guests walk through a hallway of cheering staff members singing personalized chants for them. Her favorite Spirit Tunnel walk?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAaron Pierre, that\u2019s Mufasa!\u201d she sings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube
