Two days after her 12th birthday, she got her first guitar, and her delighted father wasted no time teaching her a song: “Wooly Bully” by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs.

“The first chord is an F7 chord! I also truly believe that you need to know the notes on the fretboard. Many people think they can get around that with shapes. You can’t do that. You have to know where the notes are, and there are so many interesting ways that you can do that. You can solo on one string, you can take the shapes and say what the notes are, you can improvise on one string.
That’s what the great Mick Goodrick—who was one of the most important people in the Guitar department—he, in his book, The Advancing Guitarist, talks about soloing on one string. If you do that, you’re keeping it very simple and it’s hard to play licks on one string. I also tell all of my students there’s definitely a memorization component. It’s like learning your multiplication tables. And I know that most people don’t remember what it was like to learn their multiplication tables, but there’s so much of it that’s just rote and just repetition. People don’t realize that repetition is important. They’re like, “Well, I can just do this now.”
It’s like, “Well, okay, but you’re going to hit a wall eventually.” So I just tell them that it’s not difficult, it’s unfamiliar. So familiarize yourself with it and just play consistently. Repeat things, do everything forwards and backwards. That’s what the scales are like. A lot of times people just play scales one way. I’ll tell them to name the notes as you go up and then name them going down. The backwards thing kind of throws people off. So I just tell them they have to do that.

How do you identify potential in somebody, whether it’s the football player with the big hands or a student who’s Zooming in from a country where guitars aren’t widely accessible?

Amanda Monaco: I get in trouble for this a lot, but I’m not a big believer in talent. The thing is that because the guitar is ergonomic, I can show them exactly where the neck is supposed to be.
