How to Unpack and Open an Ableton Live Pack (ALP file)

Updated on January 11th, 2024

Ableton Live allows users to create Ableton Live Packs (ALP files), which are compressed files that contain an entire Ableton project. They are similar to ZIP files, but are a proprietary format that can only be unpacked using Ableton Live. You may need to unpack and open an ALP file if you are collaborating with another Ableton Live user, or if an ALP file is provided in one of your courses. To unpack and open your ALP file, take the following steps:

  1. Locate the ALP file on your machine and double-click on it. This will launch Ableton Live.
  2. You'll be prompted to choose where to save the Live Project Folder that is being unpacked. Choose the desired location, then click the Open button. You'll see a progress bar while the file is unpacking. Once the progress bar disappears, the folder and all Live Sets within it have been unpacked.
  3. Click File > Open Live Set, navigate to the Project Folder (which will be in the location you selected in step 2), select a Live Set in the folder, and click Open
