How to Join a Live Class from BOCCE

Updated on January 11th, 2024

You can join your Live Class directly from the course environment without needing a Zoom account. When your instructor starts a Live Class, you'll receive an email notification, and a red exclamation point will appear on the Live tab on the navigation sidebar within the course environment. At that point, follow the steps below to access the Live Class:

  1. From within the course, click the Live button, which will open the Live tab.

  1. Click Open zoom.us on Mac, or Open Zoom Meetings on Windows to join the meeting. If you want to skip this step in the future, click the box next to Always allow berklee.zoom.us to open links of this type in the associated app.

If the Join Live Class button isn't displaying when it should be, usually clearing your browser cache and refreshing the course page will solve the issue. Below are steps for clearing your browser cache.

How to Clear Your Browser's Cache

Select your browser from the options below for instructions on how to clear your browser's cache.

Chrome

PC/Mac

If you are using Chrome on a computer, you can take the following steps to clear your cache:

  1. Click on the three-dotted icon at the top right of Chrome.
  2. Click Clear Browsing Data. If it does not appear in the main menu, mouse over More Tools, which will reveal more menu items, then click Clear Browsing Data.
  3. Ensure that Basic is selected at the top of the window.
  4. Set the Time Range to All Time.
  5. Make sure that only the third checkbox (Cached images and files) is selected.
  6. Click the blue Clear Data button.
  7. Quit and reopen Chrome before trying to access the page previously causing issues.

Mobile

If you are using Chrome on a mobile device, use these steps to clear your cache:

  1. Tap the three-dotted icon at the bottom right of Chrome.
  2. Select Clear Browsing Data.
  3. Set the Time Range to All Time.
  4. Make sure that only the third item (Cached Images and Files) is checked.
  5. Select Clear Browsing Data at the bottom of the screen.
  6. Quit and reopen Chrome before trying again.

Firefox

  1. Click the three horizontal lines in the top right of Firefox and select Settings.
  2. Click Privacy & Security.
  3. Scroll down to the Cookies & Site Data section and click Clear Data.
  4. Uncheck the box for Cookies and Site Data and click Clear.
  5. Quit and reopen Firefox before trying again.

Safari

Mac

If you are using Safari on a Mac, use these steps to clear your cache:

  1. Select Safari > Preferences at the top left of Safari.
  2. Click the Advanced tab, then check the box next to Show Develop menu in the menu bar.
  3. From the menu, select Develop > Empty Caches.
  4. Quit and reopen Safari before trying again.

Mobile

If you are using Safari on a mobile device, use these steps to clear your cache:

  1. On your Mobile Device, navigate to Settings > Safari.
  2. Tap Clear History and Website Data.
  3. Click Clear History and Data on the confirmation bar.
  4. Close and reopen Safari before trying again.

If you've clicked the Join Live Class button and it appears as though nothing is happening, the most likely explanation is that your browser is treating Zoom as a pop-up window, and is blocking it from opening. Select the type of device you are using:

Computer

Mobile Device

Chrome

If you are using Chrome, when you click the Join Live Class button, a small red icon should appear at the far right of the address bar (just to the left of the bookmark star icon). Clicking the red icon will give you the option to allow the pop-up (Zoom) to open.

Safari

If you are using Safari, when you click the Join Live Class button, a small rectangular icon will appear at the far right of the address bar (just to the left of the refresh icon). If you mouse over that icon you'll see text that says Pop up blocked. Clicking the rectangular icon will give you the option to allow the pop-up to open.

Chrome

If you are using Chrome, when you tap the Join Live Class button, a banner will appear across the bottom part of your screen. Clicking that banner will give you the option to allow Zoom to open.

Safari

If you are using Safari, go to Settings > Safari and make sure Block Pop-ups is turned off. Then refresh the course page and try tapping the Join Live Class button again.

If the scheduled start time for a class has passed, but there is no indication the class has started (no email notification, and no red exclamation point on the Live tab in the course), we'd recommend reaching out to your instructor using the Private Message tool within BOCCE.

How to Send a Private Message from BOCCE

There are two ways to send a Private Message from BOCCE. You can send a message from either the Roster tab or from the Inbox tab. Select either method below for instructions. If you want to send a group message, use the method from the Inbox tab.

From the Roster Tab

  1. Access your course. Note that for this method you'll need to access the specific course in which the person you'd like to message is also enrolled (either a student or instructor).
  2. Click on the Roster button to view the Roster tab. This will be a list of all your classmates and your instructor.
  3. Click on the name of the person you wish to send a message to, then Message. This will open the Private Message composition modal.
  4. With the Private Message composition modal open, you can compose your message. To include any attachments, click the attachment icon (which looks like a paperclip), then the appropriate attachment button, and follow any additional prompts.
  5. Click the Submit button (which looks like a paper airplane) to send your message.

From the Inbox Tab

  1. Access any current or past course.
  2. Click the Inbox button to view the Inbox tab.
  3. Click the New Message icon, which is a red icon at the bottom-right corner of the Inbox tab.
  4. Click the Add User… field, then enter the name of the person you want to send a message to.
  5. Select their name from the search results.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for as many people as you'd like to include in the message.
  7. Click Start Message. This will open the Private Message composition modal.
  8. With the Private Message composition modal open, you can compose your message. To include any attachments, click the attachment icon (which looks like a paperclip), then the appropriate attachment button, and follow any additional prompts.
  9. Click the Submit button (which looks like a paper airplane) to send your message.

Once someone replies to your message, you'll get an email notification letting you know, and you'll be able to view and reply to the thread from the Inbox tab within any of your courses, as all your messages will be accessible from within any current or past course.

A Note about Email Notifications

If you reply to an email notification you received letting you know about a private or group message, the reply will not reach its intended recipient. This is because the notification itself is sent automatically by the system and is not sent from the email address of the person who sent the original message.

To reply to the message, click the View this message in Conversations link in the email notification, which will bring you directly to BOCCE with the Private Message composition modal open. You can then compose and send your reply.
