VA Benefits

Most Berklee Online programs are approved for VA benefits. Please contact us at 1-866-BERKLEE or email us at registrar@online.berklee.edu to determine if the program you are planning to pursue is approved. You may also check the VA Website to determine which programs are approved. The GI Bill cannot be used for individual courses or courses taken outside of an approved program.

VA students who are using Chapter 33 (Post-9/11 Bill), Chapter 30, or any other chapter under the GI Bill, will need to provide a certificate of eligibility in order to receive a tuition discount.

Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33)

The Post-9/11 GI Bill provides financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

The Post 9/11 GI Bill will pay eligible individuals:

  • Your full tuition and fees, paid directly to the school, for all public school in-state students. For those attending private or foreign schools, tuition and fees are capped at $21,084.89 per academic year. Visit benefits.va.gov for more information.
  • A monthly housing allowance (MHA) based on the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for an E-5 with dependents at the location of the school. For those enrolled solely in distance learning, the housing allowance payable is equal to half the national average BAH for an E-5 with dependents. Active duty students and their spouses cannot receive the MHA. To find out if you are eligible the receive the MHA, please contact the VA directly at 1-888-442-4551 or gibill.va.gov.
  • An annual books and supplies stipend of $1,000 paid proportionately based on enrollment.

Choosing to use the Post-9/11 GI Bill is an irrevocable decision. Students should review all information carefully before applying for this benefit. For a comparison of the different options, please visit the VA website.


What you need to know if you would like to use your Post-9/11 GI benefits toward a Berklee Online Certificate or Degree:
  1. Complete form 22-1990 Application for VA Education Benefits. You can also apply online at VONAPP. Once approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility. This certificate will include the percentage of the benefit you are eligible to receive.

    Note: If you have used your VA Benefits at another college or university, you will be required to complete form 22-1995 Request for Change of Program or Place of Training and submit this form to the VA. A copy of form 22-1995 must be submitted to the Assistant Continuing Education Registrar before you can use your benefits with Berklee Online.

  2. Submit the certificate of eligibility to the Assistant Continuing Education Registrar either via fax at 617-747-2149 or via email at registrar@online.berklee.edu. Please be sure that your full social security number is written on the certificate of eligibility.
  3. Work with your Academic Advisor to determine the program you wish to pursue. Your Academic Advisor will set up your schedule and order for the next term. The Assistant Continuing Education Registrar will apply your military discount as well as the approved amount from the VA. You will be responsible for paying any remaining balance due prior to the beginning of the term.
  4. The Assistant Continuing Education Registrar will certify enrollment during week three of the term.
Important Notes:
  • Students using Ch. 33 benefits will need to notify the Assistant Continuing Education Registrar each term that they wish to use these benefits. This can be done by sending an email to registrar@online.berklee.edu. Please be sure to include the course(s) you wish to take in the upcoming term in your email.
  • Students will not be enrolled in additional courses using the Post-9/11 Bill unless prior tuition and fees have been paid either by the VA or the student.
  • The student will be responsible for any approved amount that is not paid by the VA.
  • VA students are required to contact us each term prior to making a tuition payment to request the reduction.
  • The tuition reduction is not retroactive. To request the application of tuition reduction or for more information, please email registrar@online.berklee.edu or call 1-866-BERKLEE (or 1-617-747-2146 for students outside of the U.S.).

  4. Notify the Financial Aid Office that you have enrolled and wish to have your enrollment certified with the VA. This can be done by sending an email to financialaid@berklee.edu.
  5. The Financial Aid Office will certify enrollment.

Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 30)

What you need to know if you wish to use your Montgomery GI Benefits for a Berklee Online Certificate Program or Degree:
  1. Complete form 22-1990 Application for VA Education Benefits. You can apply online at VONAPP.

    Note: If you have used VA Benefits at another college or university, you will be required to complete form 22-1995 Request for Change of Program or Place of Training and submit this form to the VA before you can use your benefits with Berklee Online.
  2. If approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility which should be faxed to the Assistant Continuing Education Registrar at 617-747-2149 or emailed to registrar@online.berklee.edu. Please ensure that your full social security number is written on the certificate of eligibility.
  3. Register for the program you are interested in pursuing and pay any tuition and fees due. Be sure to request your military discount prior to making your tuition payment.
  4. Notify the Assistant Continuing Education Registrar that you have enrolled and wish to use the GI Bill. This can be done by sending an email to registrar@online.berklee.edu.
  5. The Assistant Continuing Education Registrar will certify enrollment in week three of the term.

VA Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31)

The Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) VetSuccess Program is authorized by Congress under Title 38, Code of Federal Regulations, Chapter 31. It is sometimes referred to as the Chapter 31 program. The VetSuccess program assists veterans with service-connected disabilities to prepare for, find, and keep suitable jobs. For veterans with service-connected disabilities so severe that they cannot immediately consider work, VetSuccess offers services to improve their ability to live as independently as possible. What you need to know If you would like to use your VA Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31) benefits toward a Certificate Program or Online Degree:
  1. Work with your Academic Advisor to determine the program you wish to pursue. Your Academic Advisor will set up your program and first term course(s).
  2. Contact your vocational rehabilitation counselor and ask him/her to fax form 28-1905 to the Assistant Continuing Education Registrar at 617-747-2149. The form should indicate the exact program you will be pursuing. If your vocational rehabilitation counselor is approving courses to be taken outside of the program, this needs to be clearly indicated on the form as well.
  3. Once form 28-1905 is received by Berklee Online, it will be applied to your tuition and fees due. The form will then be filled out and faxed back to your counselor.
Important Notes:
  • Form 28-1905 must be submitted each term in order to enroll with Berklee Online. It is the responsibility of the student to work with their vocational rehabilitation counselor to ensure paperwork is completed and received on time.
  • Students will not be enrolled in additional courses using vocational rehabilitation unless prior tuition and fees have been paid either by the VA or the student.
  • The student will be responsible for any approved amount that is not paid by the VA.
  1. Register for courses.

Other Chapters of the GI Bill

Chapter 1606 MGIB Selected Reserve
Members of the Selected Reserve, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard Reserves, the Army National Guard, and the Air Guard are eligible for MGIB-SR (chapter 1606). For more information, click here.

Chapter 1607 Reserve Educational Assistance (REAP)
Note: The REAP program has been terminated for all new applicants and is scheduled to terminate completely in November of 2019. For more information, click here. REAP (Chapter 1607 of title 10, U.S. Code) is a benefit providing educational assistance to members of the reserve components – Selected Reserve (Sel Res) and Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) – who are called or ordered to active service in response to a war or national emergency, as declared by the President or Congress. Chapter 35 Survivors and Dependents Assistance (DEA)
Dependents' Educational Assistance provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of certain veterans. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits. These benefits may be used for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeship, and on-the-job training. If you are a spouse, you may take a correspondence course. For more information, click here.
