VA Benefits

Most Berklee Online programs are approved for VA benefits. Please contact us at 1-866-BERKLEE or email us at finance@online.berklee.edu to determine if the program you are planning to pursue is approved. You may also check the VA Website to determine which programs are approved. The GI Bill cannot be used for individual courses or courses taken outside of an approved program.

VA students who are using Chapter 33 (Post-9/11 Bill), Chapter 30, or any other chapter under the GI Bill, will need to provide a certificate of eligibility in order to receive a tuition discount.

Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33)

The Post-9/11 GI Bill provides financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

The Post-9/11 GI Bill covers:

  • Tuition and fees up to $22,805.34 per academic year (August 1, 2017 - August 1st, 2018). Visit vets.gov for more information.

  • A monthly housing allowance (MHA). For those enrolled solely in distance learning, the housing allowance payable is equal to half the national average BAH for an E-5 with dependents. The housing allowance is paid proportionately based on enrollment. Active duty students and their spouses cannot receive the MHA. To find out if you are eligible the receive the MHA, please contact the VA directly at 1-888-442-4551 or vets.gov

  • An annual books and supplies stipend of $1,000 paid proportionately based on enrollment.


What you need to know if you would like to use your Post-9/11 GI benefits toward a Berklee Online certificate program or degree:
  1. Complete form 22-1990 Application for VA Education Benefits. You can also apply online at vets.gov. Once approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility. This certificate will include your benefit level and overall entitlement. 
  2. If you have used your VA Benefits at another college or university, you will be required to submit form 22-1995 Request for Change of Program or Place of Training at vets.gov. A copy of form 22-1995 must be submitted to the Veteran Affairs Coordinator before using your VA benefits. Please submit via fax at +1-617-747-2149 or via email at finance@online.berklee.edu
  3. Submit your certificate of eligibility to the Veterans Affairs Coordinator either via fax at +1-617-747-2149 or via email at finance@online.berklee.edu.
  4. Work with your Academic Advisor to determine the program you wish to pursue. Your Academic Advisor will set up your schedule and order for the next term.
  5. The Veterans Affairs Coordinator will apply your military discount as well as the approved amount from the VA. You will be responsible for paying any remaining balance due prior to the beginning of the term. Military discounts are not retroactive. Please request the application of your military discount prior to paying your tuition.
  6. The Veterans Affairs Coordinator will certify enrollment during week three of the term.
Important Notes:
  • Students using Ch. 33 benefits will need to notify the Veterans Affairs Coordinator each term that they wish to use benefits by sending an email to finance@online.berklee.edu. Please be sure to include the course(s) you wish to take in the upcoming term in your email.
  • The student will be responsible for any approved amount that is not paid by the VA.

Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 30)

What you need to know if you wish to use your Montgomery GI Benefits for a Berklee Online certificate program or degree:
  1. Complete form 22-1990 Application for VA Education Benefits online at vets.gov.

    Note: If you have used VA Benefits at another college or university, you will be required to submit form 22-1995 Request for Change of Program or Place of Training at vets.gov. A copy of form 22-1995 must be submitted to the Veterans Affairs Coordinator before you can use your benefits with Berklee Online. Please submit via fax at +1-617-747-2149 or via email at finance@online.berklee.edu.
  2. If approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility which should be faxed to the Veterans Affairs Coordinator at +1-617-747-2149 or emailed to finance@online.berklee.edu.
  3. Register for the program you are interested in pursuing and pay any tuition and fees due. Be sure to request your military discount prior to making your tuition payment.
  4. Notify the Veterans Affairs Coordinator that you have enrolled and wish to use the Montgomery GI Bill. This can be done by sending an email to finance@online.berklee.edu.
  5. The Veterans Affairs Coordinator will certify enrollment in week three of the term.

VA Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31)

The Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) VetSuccess Program is authorized by Congress under Title 38, Code of Federal Regulations, Chapter 31. It is sometimes referred to as the Chapter 31 program. The VetSuccess Program assists veterans with service-connected disabilities to prepare for, find, and keep suitable jobs. For veterans with service-connected disabilities so severe that they cannot immediately consider work, VetSuccess offers services to improve their ability to live as independently as possible.

What you need to know If you would like to use your VA Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31) benefits toward a certificate program or online degree:
  1. Work with your Academic Advisor to determine the program you wish to pursue. Your Academic Advisor will set up your program and first term course(s).
  2. Contact your vocational rehabilitation counselor and ask him/her to fax form 28-1905 to the Veterans Affairs Coordinator at +1-617-747-2149 or email to finance@online.berklee.edu. The form should indicate the exact program you will be pursuing. If your vocational rehabilitation counselor is approving courses to be taken outside of the program, this needs to be clearly indicated on the form as well.
  3. Once form 28-1905 is received by Berklee Online, it will be applied to your tuition and fees due. The form will then be filled out and faxed back to your counselor.
Important Notes:
  • Form 28-1905 must be submitted each term in order to enroll with Berklee Online. It is the responsibility of the student to work with their vocational rehabilitation counselor to ensure paperwork is completed and received on time.
  • Students will not be enrolled in additional courses using vocational rehabilitation unless prior tuition and fees have been paid either by the VA or the student.
  • The student will be responsible for any approved amount that is not paid by the VA.
  1. Register for courses.
  2. Contact your vocational rehabilitation counselor and ask him/her to fax form 28-1905 to the Veterans Affairs Coordinator at +1-617-747-2149. The form should indicate the exact program you will be pursuing. If your vocational rehabilitation counselor is approving courses to be taken outside of the program, this needs to be clearly indicated on the form as well.
  3. Once form 28-1905 is received by Berklee Online, it will be applied to your tuition and fees due. The form will then be filled out and faxed back to your counselor.

Other Chapters of the GI Bill

Chapter 1606 MGIB Selected Reserve
Members of the Selected Reserve, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard Reserves, the Army National Guard, and the Air Guard are eligible for MGIB-SR (chapter 1606). For more information, click here.

Chapter 1607 Reserve Educational Assistance (REAP)
Note: The REAP program has been terminated for all new applicants and is scheduled to terminate completely in November of 2019. For more information, click here. REAP (Chapter 1607 of title 10, U.S. Code) is a benefit providing educational assistance to members of the reserve components – Selected Reserve (Sel Res) and Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) – who are called or ordered to active service in response to a war or national emergency, as declared by the President or Congress. Chapter 35 Survivors and Dependents Assistance (DEA)
Dependents' Educational Assistance provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of certain veterans. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits. These benefits may be used for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeship, and on-the-job training. If you are a spouse, you may take a correspondence course. For more information, click here.
