Private Composition Lesson Level 3 builds on a foundational understanding of music composition. It prepares you to expand your skills by writing for chamber ensembles consisting of two to four instruments. The focus will be on composing for small ensembles, where you will explore the intricate dynamics, textures, and interactions between multiple instruments.

This level will cover advanced techniques using musical elements that may include melody, harmony, rhythm, form, and texture, with an emphasis on creating cohesive and engaging pieces for two to four instruments. Through the study of existing repertoire and the completion of various composition exercises, you will develop a deeper understanding of ensemble writing and the unique challenges and opportunities it presents.

By the end of Private Composition Lesson Level 3, you will be able to:

  • Analyze complex musical forms suitable for a small ensemble (two or four instruments)
  • Demonstrate the ability to create cohesive compositions
  • Effectively apply varied time signatures and rhythmic techniques to add interest and complexity
  • Apply various expressive techniques to enhance the character and emotion of your compositions
  • Apply timbral techniques appropriate to the instruments in small ensemble settings
  • Experiment with textural techniques to create varied and interesting ensemble interactions
  • Notate the score according to professional notation standards
  • Reflect on your compositional process and articulate artistic choices and intentions
  • Compose a chamber ensemble piece for two to four instruments

Requirements

Prerequisites and Course-Specific Requirements 

Prerequisite Courses, Knowledge, and/or Skills
Completion of Private Composition Lesson Level 2 is required.

Software

  • Students are required to create notation and submit it in PDF format. Options include:
    • Notation software (recommended option), such as Sibelius, Dorico, MuseScore (free), etc.
    • Handwritten notation captured by a digital camera or a scanner can be used in lieu of notation software.

Instrument

  • Piano or keyboard instrument with at least 61 keys and a sustain pedal
    • If using a MIDI keyboard controller, a high-quality piano software instrument is also required.
    • If using a digital piano or keyboard workstation without built-in speakers, an audio interface or amplifier is also required.
