Private Composition Lesson Level 3 builds upon a foundational understanding of music composition and prepares you to expand your skills by writing for duo or trio, including piano. This level will cover advanced techniques in melody, harmony, rhythm, and form, with an emphasis on creating cohesive and engaging pieces for two or three instruments. Through the study of existing repertoire and the completion of various composition exercises, you will develop a deeper understanding of ensemble writing and the unique challenges and opportunities it presents.

By the end of Private Composition Lesson Level 3, you will be able to:

  • Analyze and apply complex musical forms suitable for duo and trio ensembles
  • Demonstrate the ability to create cohesive compositions with clear thematic development
  • Effectively apply varied time signatures and rhythmic techniques to add interest and complexity
  • Explore and apply various expressive techniques to enhance the character and emotion of your compositions
  • Apply unique timbral and technical characteristics of different instruments in duo and trio settings
  • Experiment with textural techniques to create varied and interesting ensemble interactions
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using notation software to accurately notate your ensemble compositions
  • Refine score preparation skills to ensure clarity and playability
  • Incorporate elements from different genres and periods into your compositions to create diverse and well-rounded pieces

Requirements

Prerequisites and Course-Specific Requirements 

Prerequisite Courses, Knowledge, and/or Skills
Completion of Private Composition Lesson Level 2 is required.

Software

  • DAW suitable for scoring to picture and/or orchestral mockup production, such as Logic Pro, Cubase Pro, Pro Tools (Studio or Ultimate), or Reaper
  • Students are required to create notation and submit it in PDF format. Options include:
    • Notation software (recommended option), such as Finale, Sibelius, Dorico, MuseScore (free), etc.
    • Handwritten notation captured by a digital camera or a scanner can be used in lieu of notation software.

Instrument

  • Piano or keyboard instrument with at least 61 keys and a sustain pedal
    • If using a MIDI keyboard controller, a high-quality piano software instrument is also required.
    • If using a digital piano or keyboard workstation without built in speakers, an audio interface or amplifier is also required.

Hardware

  • Students may sometimes be required to capture a live performance of their composition in high quality and monitor audio output. Options include:
    • Input (one required):
    • Output (one required):
      • Headphones (required if multitracking and/or input monitoring)
      • Studio monitors and audio interface
      • Built-in or external speakers
  • Note: Depending on your setup, you may also need an XLR cable, microphone stand, and pop filter.
