Private Composition Lesson Level 4 will continue your study of writing for chamber ensembles, now consisting of four or more instruments. You will learn more advanced techniques in melody, harmony, rhythm, and form, with a special emphasis on the specific demands and possibilities of writing for a larger ensemble.

By the end of the course, you will have composed and fully notated original work for a chamber ensemble of four or more instruments. This composition will fulfill the requirements for the Music Composition Degree Portfolio and demonstrate your advanced understanding of ensemble writing, as well as your ability to craft cohesive and expressive music.

By the end of Private Composition Lesson Level 4, you will be able to:

  • Analyze and apply complex musical forms and structures specific to compositions for larger ensembles of four or more instruments
  • Create cohesive compositions
  • Develop intricate melodies and harmonies that leverage the individual and collective voices of the ensemble
  • Employ advanced harmonic progressions and voice-leading techniques suitable for larger chamber ensemble writing
  • Integrate syncopation and other rhythmic devices to enhance the interplay between instruments
  • Apply various expressive techniques (e.g., dynamics, articulation, vibrato) to enhance the emotional impact and character of the composition
  • Apply the unique timbral and technical characteristics to create balanced and effective instrumental compositions
  • Experiment with textural techniques (e.g., counterpoint, homophony, polyphony) to create varied and engaging ensemble interactions
  • Notate the score according to professional notation standards
  • Reflect on your compositional process and articulate artistic choices and intentions
  • Compose a chamber ensemble piece for four or more instruments

Requirements

Prerequisites and Course-Specific Requirements 

Prerequisite Courses, Knowledge, and/or Skills
Completion of Private Composition Lesson Level 3 is required.

Software

  • Students are required to create notation and submit it in PDF format. Options include:
    • Notation software (recommended option), such as Sibelius, Dorico, MuseScore (free), etc.
    • Handwritten notation captured by a digital camera or a scanner can be used in lieu of notation software.

Instrument

  • Piano or keyboard instrument with at least 61 keys and a sustain pedal
    • If using a MIDI keyboard controller, a high-quality piano software instrument is also required.
    • If using a digital piano or keyboard workstation without built in speakers, an audio interface or amplifier is also required.
