Private Composition Lesson Level 6

Private Composition Lesson Level 6 - Conducting. Conducting is an important technique and skill for a composer, as many composers are in situations where they conduct their own compositions in various settings. It will provide you with fundamental conducting skills, incorporating conducting experience and in-depth score study, emphasizing symphonic and chamber music repertoire. Beginning skills include basic baton technique, standard beat patterns, indicating dynamics and articulations, cueing entrances, leadership skills, and more. Elements of score reading and score preparation and familiarity with orchestral instruments will also be addressed. Repertoire to include symphony orchestra works (and/or excerpts of works) from the classical and contemporary repertoire. It is strongly recommended that you take a composition class concurrently with Private Composition Lesson Level 6.

By the end of Private Composition Lesson Level 6 Conducting, you will be able to:

  • Develop basic conducting skills that can be applied to a variety of musical styles
  • Perform passages from orchestral repertoire
  • Demonstrate basic verbal and non-verbal communication skills

Requirements

Prerequisites and Course-Specific Requirements 

Prerequisite Courses, Knowledge, and/or Skills
Completion of Private Composition Lesson Level 5 is required.

Software

  • DAW suitable for scoring to picture and/or orchestral mockup production, such as Logic Pro, Cubase Pro, Pro Tools (Studio or Ultimate), or Reaper
  • Students are required to create notation and submit it in PDF format. Options include:
    • Notation software (recommended option), such as Finale, Sibelius, Dorico, MuseScore (free), etc.
    • Handwritten notation captured by a digital camera or a scanner can be used in lieu of notation software.

Instrument

  • Piano or keyboard instrument with at least 61 keys and a sustain pedal
    • If using a MIDI keyboard controller, a high-quality piano software instrument is also required.
    • If using a digital piano or keyboard workstation without built in speakers, an audio interface or amplifier is also required.

Hardware

  • Students may sometimes be required to capture a live performance of their composition in high quality and monitor audio output. Options include:
    • Input (one required):
    • Output (one required):
      • Headphones (required if multitracking and/or input monitoring)
      • Studio monitors and audio interface
      • Built-in or external speakers
  • Note: Depending on your setup, you may also need an XLR cable, microphone stand, and pop filter.
