Private Composition Lesson Level 8 continues advanced composition techniques of writing a large-scale piece. You will continue to develop the ability to compose sophisticated, large-scale works that explore the intricacies of orchestration, advanced harmonic and melodic techniques, and the art of creating dynamic and cohesive large ensemble pieces. You will also continue to analyze masterworks from the orchestral and large ensemble repertoire, gaining insights into the techniques and approaches of renowned composers. You will also engage in practical composition exercises and complete a major original large-scale composition.

By the end of Private Composition Lesson Level 8, you will be able to:

  • Analyze and apply more advanced orchestration techniques, including the effective use of instrumental color, balance, and blending
  • Continue orchestrating for a full orchestra or large ensemble, considering the unique timbres and technical capabilities of each instrument
  • Employ more advanced harmonic techniques, extended tonalities, and complex chord structures in large ensemble compositions
  • Develop more intricate and memorable melodies that are effective within the context of a large ensemble
  • Analyze and apply large-scale formal structures, such as sonata-allegro, rondo, and through-composed forms, in orchestral compositions
  • Complete a cohesive large-scale work with clear structural and thematic development
  • Continue using advanced rhythmic techniques to create dynamic and engaging orchestral works
  • Continue using advanced notation software to accurately notate complex orchestral scores
  • Continue refining score preparation skills to ensure clarity, readability, and playability

Requirements

Prerequisites and Course-Specific Requirements 

Prerequisite Courses, Knowledge, and/or Skills
Completion of Private Composition Lesson Level 7 is required.

Software

  • DAW suitable for scoring to picture and/or orchestral mockup production, such as Logic Pro, Cubase Pro, Pro Tools (Studio or Ultimate), or Reaper
  • Students are required to create notation and submit it in PDF format. Options include:
    • Notation software (recommended option), such as Finale, Sibelius, Dorico, MuseScore (free), etc.
    • Handwritten notation captured by a digital camera or a scanner can be used in lieu of notation software.

Instrument

  • Piano or keyboard instrument with at least 61 keys and a sustain pedal
    • If using a MIDI keyboard controller, a high-quality piano software instrument is also required.
    • If using a digital piano or keyboard workstation without built in speakers, an audio interface or amplifier is also required.

Hardware

  • Students may sometimes be required to capture a live performance of their composition in high quality and monitor audio output. Options include:
    • Input (one required):
    • Output (one required):
      • Headphones (required if multitracking and/or input monitoring)
      • Studio monitors and audio interface
      • Built-in or external speakers
  • Note: Depending on your setup, you may also need an XLR cable, microphone stand, and pop filter.
