Private Composition Lesson Level 9 is the final level of private lessons that requires you to complete a major composition project that can incorporate electronic elements or instrumentation. It’s an opportunity to explore and integrate advanced techniques in electronic music production, sound design, or electronic instruments with traditional acoustic instruments, pushing the boundaries of contemporary music composition. You receive personalized instruction and mentorship, guiding you through the creative and technical aspects of your composition project.

You will analyze pioneering works in electroacoustic music, experiment with cutting-edge technologies, and develop a unique compositional voice. The lesson culminates in the creation and presentation of a substantial original work, demonstrating your mastery of advanced compositional techniques and innovative approaches.

By the end of Private Composition Lesson Level 9, you will be able to:

  • Develop and articulate a comprehensive artistic vision for a major composition project
  • Plan and execute a project timeline, from initial concept through to final performance or presentation
  • Analyze and apply techniques for integrating electronic elements with traditional acoustic instruments
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using electronic music production tools and software (e.g., DAWs, synthesizers, samplers)
  • Employ advanced harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic techniques in the creation of original works
  • Utilize innovative approaches to form and structure, tailoring them to the unique demands of the project
  • Explore and apply sound design principles to create original electronic sounds and textures
  • Demonstrate proficiency in audio recording, editing, and mixing to produce high-quality electronic elements
  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency in music notation software for accurately notating complex compositions
  • Refine score preparation skills to ensure clarity, readability, and playability, producing professional-quality scores and parts
  • Present a substantial original work, demonstrating mastery of advanced compositional techniques and innovative approaches, in a final performance or presentation

Requirements

Prerequisites and Course-Specific Requirements 

Prerequisite Courses, Knowledge, and/or Skills
Completion of Private Composition Lesson Level 8 is required.

Software

  • DAW suitable for scoring to picture and/or orchestral mockup production, such as Logic Pro, Cubase Pro, Pro Tools (Studio or Ultimate), or Reaper
  • Students are required to create notation and submit it in PDF format. Options include:
    • Notation software (recommended option), such as Finale, Sibelius, Dorico, MuseScore (free), etc.
    • Handwritten notation captured by a digital camera or a scanner can be used in lieu of notation software.

Instrument

  • Piano or keyboard instrument with at least 61 keys and a sustain pedal
    • If using a MIDI keyboard controller, a high-quality piano software instrument is also required.
    • If using a digital piano or keyboard workstation without built in speakers, an audio interface or amplifier is also required.

Hardware

  • Students may sometimes be required to capture a live performance of their composition in high quality and monitor audio output. Options include:
    • Input (one required):
    • Output (one required):
      • Headphones (required if multitracking and/or input monitoring)
      • Studio monitors and audio interface
      • Built-in or external speakers
  • Note: Depending on your setup, you may also need an XLR cable, microphone stand, and pop filter.
