Writing and Producing Music Degree

Overview

The Writing and Producing Music major is for the musician of the future. Because of the intense focus on multiple disciplines—writing, producing, arranging, and the latest music software available—you will become a versatile asset to any project within the music industry. People who are hiring in the industry are searching for talent familiar with a variety of styles and techniques, and proficiency with traditional skills like writing for acoustic ensembles, but at the same time, the most viable candidates for jobs will also know the newest technology and a wide breadth of hybrid production techniques.

This is what the Writing and Producing Music major provides. The major begins with a set of core music and technology courses that provide a foundation in theory, ear training, and basic composition and arranging methods. You'll also learn how to apply these technical skills to music notation and production software. From there, you'll explore contemporary arranging and production techniques, while developing your ability to recognize, analyze, and evaluate musical concepts across a variety of popular music styles.

The Writing and Producing Music major is also the only online degree major that features Berklee Online’s arranging curriculum. You'll get hands-on experience with all of these concepts by writing and producing a full portfolio of recordings that will range from acoustic to electronic to any number of instrumental combinations. The major culminates in a capstone project that showcases your abilities and readies you for the career of your choice.

Admission Requirement: Demonstration of Musicianship

For the Writing and Producing Music major, students are required to submit ONE of the following:

  • A portfolio of at least two original compositions. Students should submit musical notation for each composition as PDF files. Though not required, it is also helpful to submit a sound recording (MP3 file) of each piece. Students will not be evaluated on the production quality of the recordings, but rather on the compositional ideas expressed in the recordings.
  • A recorded video audition, in which the student performs a prepared piece (original or cover) in any musical style on his/her principal instrument. The performance should be an unedited take, approximately 3-5 minutes in length, in any style, which demonstrates the student's instrumental proficiency and overall musicianship. The video should be uploaded to a website like YouTube or Vimeo, with a link provided for review by the Board of Admissions.
